Linewidth of Tunable Stimulated Raman Scattering

C. Kumar N. Patel

We report direct measurements of the tunable spin-flip Raman (SFR) laser linewidth, obtained by heterodyning the SFR laser output with the output from a cw gas laser. The measured linewidth for the cw SFR laser operating near 5.3 \ensuremath{\mu}m is 1 kHz and is limited by the spectrum analyzer resolution. The measured linewidth of 1 kHz is the narrowest known for any tunable source of coherent radiation in the infrared.

cw tunable laser-sideband generation from 5.5 to 6.5 μm by light scattering from spin motion in a spin-flip Raman laser

V. T. Nguyen, E. G. Burkhardt

We have succeeded in generating cw laser sidebands at wavelengths tunable from ∼5.5 to ∼6.5 μm. The behavior of the power output of the generated radiation is described quantitatively by using the equivalence between four-photon mixing and Raman scattering from coherent spin motion in a spin-flip Raman laser.

Spin flip Raman scattering of harmonically generated 5.3μm radiation

Robert L. Allwood, Richard B. Dennis, R. Mellish +3 more

The authors report the observation of stimulated Stokes scattering of 5.3 mu m pump radiation by spin flip excitations in InSb, using a 10.6 mu m CO 2 laser, together with a tellurium frequency doubler, as the 5.3 mu m source. The effects of resonant enhancement on the 5.3 mu m scattering are discussed and comparison made with 10.6 mu m results. The observation of atmospheric water vapour absorption lines near 5.5 mu m demonstrates the application of the spin flip source to high resolution spectroscopy.
