Hole pairing and clustering in the two-dimensionalt-Jmodel

Abstract

Hole-density correlation functions in the t-J model on lattices with square geometry are studied by the method of exact diagonalization for systems of various sizes with up to 26 sites. For the largest sizes we employ only a restricted basis, whereby for the extrapolation we introduce and test a scaling procedure. For two holes in an antiferromagnet our results confirm their binding for J>${\mathit{J}}_{\mathit{c}}$\ensuremath{\sim}0.2t. For four holes the two-point and four-point density correlations, calculated for N=18,20 sites, show clear evidence for hole-clustering instabilities for J>${\mathit{J}}_{\mathit{s}}$\ensuremath{\sim}1.5t; a first instability is likely to be towards a striped phase, with holes forming domain walls along the (0,1) or (1,0) direction. Signs for the phase separation into a hole-rich and a hole-free phase appear only at J>${\mathit{J}}_{\mathit{s}}^{\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\sim}2.5t. Results in the intermediate regime 0.4J/t1.2 are consistent with the pairing picture, although there are also indications for a large weight of configurations representing domain walls along the (1,1) direction.

Phase diagram of the two-dimensionalt-Jmodel at low doping

Didier Poilblanc

The phase diagram of the planar t-J model at small hole doping is investigated by finite-size scaling of exact diagonalization data of \ensuremath{\surd}N \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} \ensuremath{\surd}N clusters (N\ensuremath{\le}26). Hole-droplet binding energies, compressibility, and static spin and charge correlations are calculated. Short-range antiferromagnetic correlations can produce attractive forces between holes leading to a very rich phase diagram including a liquid of d-wave hole pairs (for J/t\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.2), a liquid of hole droplets (quartets) for larger J/t ratios (J/t\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.5), and, at even larger coupling J/t, an instability towards phase separation.

Binding of holes and the pair spectral function in thet-Jmodel

Didier Poilblanc

Clusters of the two-dimensional t-J model with two holes and up to 26 sites are diagonalized using a Lanczos algorithm. The behavior of the binding energy with system size suggests the existence of a finite critical value of J above which binding occurs in the bulk. Only the d-wave pair-field operator acting on the Heisenberg ground state has a finite overlap with the two-hole ground state for all the clusters considered. The related spectral function associated with the propagation of a d-wave (singlet) pair of holes in the antiferromagnetic background is calculated. The quasiparticle peak at the bottom of the spectrum as well as some structure appearing above the peak survive with increasing cluster size. Although no simple scaling law was found for the quasiparticle weight the data strongly suggest that this weight is finite in the bulk limit and is roughly proportional to the antiferromagnetic coupling J (for J1).

Dynamical domain walls and spin-Peierls order in doped antiferromagnets: Evidence from exact diagonalization of small clusters

R. Eder, Y. Ohta

The hole-doped two-dimensional(2D) $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model is studied by exact diagonalization on a $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4$ cluster which, unlike the standard tilted-square clusters, can in principle accomodate an antiphase domain wall. For hole concentration $10%$ and $J/t>~0.5$ the ground-state energy/site is lower than the conventional tilted-square $\sqrt{20}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{20}$ cluster. In the ground state two holes form a loosely bound pair pinned to an antiphase domain wall. The dynamical density correlation function shows sharp quasiparticlelike peaks, reminiscent of the ``holons'' in 1D chains, which suggest the existence of solitonlike propagating domain walls. The dynamical correlation function of the bond-singlet operator has a low-energy peak structure characteristic of columnar spin-Peierls order, the dynamical spin-correlation function shows an intense and isolated ``resonance peak'' near $(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}).$

Hole dynamics in thet-Jmodel: An exact diagonalization study

Yukio Hasegawa, Didier Poilblanc

Exact many-body states of square clusters up to 18 sites (with periodic boundary conditions) are investigated in order to study the dynamics of one or two holes in the t-J model. Our method takes full advantage of the translation, rotation, and reflection symmetries of the cluster. Using a modified Lanczos algorithm, we calculate the lowest state of all the different space-group representations and its total spin as well as its spin and hole correlations. For a single hole, at intermediate J/t values, the magnetic, kinetic energies, and staggered magnetization follow J/t power-law behaviors with size-dependent exponents. A binding energy of order J between two holes appears for sufficiently large J/t(\ensuremath{\ge}0.25). One-hole and two-hole calculations give different results regarding the stability of the Nagaoka state (against the singlet state) when J/t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0. Energy expectation values of variational resonating-valence-bond states are calculated exactly and optimized. Significant overlaps with the exact states are found for any symmetry.

Spatial distribution of mobile holes in thet-Jmodel

K. J. E. Vos, Robert J Gooding, P. W. Leung +1 more

We have calculated the hole-hole correlation function for two holes doped into a S=1/2 antiferromagnetic insulator described by the t-J model on a 16-site \ensuremath{\surd}8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\ensuremath{\surd}32 lattice and a 24-site \ensuremath{\surd}18\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\ensuremath{\surd}32 lattice using an exact diagonalization technique. We predict that the carriers described by this model, in the parameter range relevant to ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ planes, tend to stay as far apart as possible. This result is in direct contradiction to previously published exact diagonalization data [e.g., D. Poilblanc, Phys. Rev. B 49, 1477 (1994)]. We suggest that if the carriers do tend to stay as far apart from one another as possible, then the electron momentum distribution function shows evidence for hole pockets at k\ensuremath{\rightarrow}=(\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi}/2,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\pi}/2), consistent with many recent studies of these models, including recent photoemission work.

NUMERICAL STUDY OF HOLE CORRELATION IN THE t-J MODEL WITH FOUR HOLES ON A 32-SITE LATTICE

P. W. Leung

We solve the t-J model with four holes on a 32-site lattice using exact diagonalization. This is the largest scale calculation ever reported for this model. The size of the matrix involved in this problem is about 3×109 by 3×109. We find that at the realistic parameter J/t = 0.3, holes in the ground state of this system are unbound. They have short range repulsion due to lowering of kinetic energy. The electron momentum distribution function resembles hole pockets. We show that in case antiferromagnetic order is strong, holes form d-wave bound pairs and there is mutual repulsion among the holes. This presumably will occur at low doping level.
