Two-fold photoelectron counting statistics: the clipped correlation function

Abstract

Two-fold photoelectron counting statistics are studied for quasimonochromatic light of arbitrary spectral profile. A numerical scheme is developed for the evaluation of the double generating function from which the joint probabilities, the photoelectron correlation function, and the clipped photoelectron correlation function can be evaluated. The time need not be short compared to the coherence time as in previous studies. Numerical results are presented for the photoelectron correlation function and for the clipped correlation function for the spectrum which would be observed in a Brillouin scattering experiment.

Generating Function of the N-fold Photoelectric Counting Distribution for Gaussian Light

Cyrus D. Cantrell

An exact expression is obtained for the generating function of the N-fold (i.e., N-detector) photoelectron counting distribution for cross-spectrally pure Gaussian light, in terms of the onefold generating function. It is assumed that the counting times at the different detectors are all equal, but not necessarily short compared to the coherence time of the light. In cases where the onefold generating function can be calculated, a closed formula for the N-fold generating function can be obtained.

Onefold photoelectron-counting statistics of mixtures of thermal and coherent radiation

Richard G. Barakat

We consider onefold photoelectron-counting statistics, for arbitrary counting times, when the wave field on the detector is a mixture of thermal light of a specified spectral profile (incoherent component) and a harmonic signal (coherent component). The probability density function of the time-integrated intensity W(Ω) is obtained from the inverse Laplace transform of the moment-generating function by the Dubner–Abate algorithm. The corresponding probability distribution of the detected photoelectrons, P(m), is then evaluated directly by numerical integration of W(Ω). Numerical results for W(Ω) and P(m) have been obtained when the thermal line shape is Lorentzian for both the homodyne situation (coherent line coincides with the mean frequency of the thermal spectral profile) and the heterodyne situation (coherent line is now off center with respect to the mean frequency of the thermal spectral profile).

Onefold photoelectron counting statistics for non-Gaussian light: Scattering from polydispersive suspensions

Richard G. Barakat, Julian Blake

Onefold photoelectron counting distributions are evaluated for coherent light scattered by an ensemble of particles. The ensemble contains, in general, a random number of nonidentical particles. Expressions are obtained for the probability density function and the moments of the scattering intensity. These results reduce to those of Pusey, Schaefer, and Koppel when the particles are identical. Photocount probabilities are also evaluated. The variance, coefficient of skewness, and coefficient of excess are evaluated when the probability density of the intensity contributed by each scatterer is specified by a narrow Gaussian distribution centered about the deterministic mean.

N-time joint photon counting distributions for Gaussian light

Demosthenes Dialetis

Results have been presented by Bedard (see abstr. A33736 of 1967) on the derivation of the N-fold joint photocount distribution of a Gaussian (thermal) radiation field of arbitrary spectral profile, when the counting-time intervals are short compared with the coherence time of the light. In this paper these results are extended for arbitrary counting-time intervals. The authors assume that the fluctuating radiation field has a fixed direction of propagation and that all the photodetector surfaces lie within one coherence area on a plane normal to this direction of propagation. The evaluation of the -fold joint photocount distribution and the photocount moments can be reduced to the solution of either a homogeneous or an inhomogeneous (Fredholm) integral equation of the second kind.

Clipped photon-counting covariance functions

Richard G. Barakat

The joint probability of finding m2 photons in detection interval 2 and m1 photons in detection interval 1 was previously determined by the author [ J. Mod. Opt.34, 91 ( 1987)] in terms of a series expansion of the time-integrated intensity correlation function with coefficients given by a class of orthogonal polynomials in the discrete variables m2 and m1. This expansion is now used to obtain an expression for the average of two general functions υ(m2) and u(m1), 〈υ(m2)u(m1)〉. These functions are specialized to cover two important situations: singly and doubly clipped covariances for essentially arbitrary counting times. In the doubly clipped case, different clipping levels are permitted in the two channels in order to study the influence of clipping mismatch. Numerical calculations, in the form of graphs, are used to illustrate typical behavior.

Photoelectron statistics and autocorrelation of Rayleigh scattering

T. Aoki, Yutaka Okabe, Kenji Sakurai

The statistics and autocorrelation function of the light scattered from polystyrene latex have been studied with a light-detecting system on-line with a small digital computer. The distributions of photoelectric counts have been measured during count intervals from 5 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ to 5 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ sec. The results were well accounted for by the approximate theory of Mandel. The factorial moments have been measured to sixth order and the results were in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations. For the first time, we have directly measured the autocorrelation function without using a clipping or scaling method. With this direct method, the comparison between the results of the composite measurements and the theoretical predictions can be quantitatively discussed.
