Geometric phase and the generalized invariant formulation

Abstract

An alternative concept of the basic invariants is introduced. The Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory is extended to obtain a generalized invariant formulation. The formulation is then used to establish four facts: (i) Any invariant for a quantum system can be constructed in terms of the basic invariants. (ii) It is possible to introduce a solution-generating technique by making use of the basic invariants. (iii) The path integral in the generalized invariant formulation reduces to an ordinary integral. (iv) The study of noncyclic evolution of a quantum system reduces explicitly to the study of the cyclic evolution. Finally, phase factors and general solution for the driven generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator are studied as an illustrative example.

Invariants and geometric phase for systems with non-Hermitian time-dependent Hamiltonians

Xiao-Chun Gao, Jing-Bo Xu, Tiezheng Qian

In this paper, the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory is generalized for the study of systems with non-Hermitian time-dependent Hamiltonians. It is then used to study the nonadiabatic cyclic evolution and the Aharonov-Anandan phase. It is shown that the study of noncyclic evolution can be reduced to the study of cyclic evolution. The two-level dissipative system and the classical time-dependent harmonic oscillator are discussed as illustrative examples.

Time Evolution of a Particle with Spin-j in an Oscillating Magnetic Field and Geometric Phases

Yu You

Quantum invariant theory is an effective method to study geometric phase problems. By making use of the Lewis Riesenfeld invariant theory, a particle with spin j in an oscillating magnetic field is studied and the exact solutions for two different cyclic periods are found. It is then used to obtain two different geometric phases corresponding to two different cyclic periods. It is quite clear from our derivation that the geometric phases corresponding to two different cyclic periods are closely associated with the initial states of the system.

Solutions to the time-dependent Schrodinger equation in the continuous spectrum case

Mustapha Maamache, Y. Saadi

We generalize the Lewis-Riesenfeld technique of solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation to cases where the invariant has continuous eigenvalues. An explicit formula for a generalized Lewis-Riesenfeld phase is derived in terms of the eigenstates of the invariant. As an illustration the generalized phase is calculated for a particle in a time-dependent linear potential.

Systematic Treatment of General Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator in Classical and Quantum Mechanics

H. Kanasugi, Hidehiko Okada

A systematic way of treating a general time-dependent harmonic oscillator in classical and quantum mechanics is given. By a general canonical transformation in classical mechanics, the time-dependent Hamiltonian can be transformed to a time-independent one (the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant), explicitly separating a total time-derivative term. In quantum mechanics, one can obtain the phase of the wave function straightforwardly from this total-derivative term, together with the corresponding time-independent Hamiltonian. We solve analytically and algebraically the general time-dependent harmonic oscillator driven by a time-dependent inverse cubic force as an example.

Exact time-dependent decoherence factor and its adiabatic classical limit

Shen, J Q, Chen, P, Hong Mao

The present paper finds the complete set of exact solutions of the general time-dependent dynamical models for quantum decoherence, by making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation. Based on this, the general explicit expression for the decoherence factor is then obtained and the adiabatic classical limit of an illustrative example is discussed. The result (i.e., the adiabatic classical limit) obtained in this paper is consistent with what obtained by other authors, and futhermore we obtain the more general results concerning the time-dependent non-adiabatic quantum decoherence. It is shown that the invariant theory is appropriate for treating both the time-dependent quantum decoherence and the geometric phase factor.

Geometric Phases, Symmetries of Dynamical Invariants, and Exact Solution of the Schrödinger Equation

We introduce the notion of the geometrically equivalent quantum systems (GEQS) as quantum systems that lead to the same geometric phases for a given complete set of initial state vectors. We give a characterization of the GEQS. These systems have a common dynamical invariant, and their Hamiltonians and evolution operators are related by symmetry transformations of the invariant. If the invariant is T-periodic, the corresponding class of GEQS includes a system with a T-periodic Hamiltonian. We apply our general results to study the classes of GEQS that include a system with a cranked Hamiltonian H(t) = e −iKt H0e iKt. We show that the cranking operator K also belongs to this class. Hence, in spite of the fact that it is time-independent, it leads to nontrivial cyclic evolutions and geometric phases. Our analysis allows for an explicit construction of a complete set of nonstationary cyclic states of any time-independent simple harmonic oscillator. The period of these cyclic states is half the characteristic period of the oscillator. PACS numbers: 03.65.Bz 1
