Picosecond Photon Echoes Stimulated from an Accumulated Grating

Wim H. Hesselink, Douwe A. Wiersma

It is shown that in optical transitions with a bottleneck, a mode-locked cw dye laser may be used to generate and heterodyne detect picosecond photon echoes. These echoes are stimulated from an accumulated grating in the electronic ground state formed by a train of twin excitation pulses of constant phase difference. In the zero-phonon transition of pentacene in naphthalene at 6026.8 \AA{} the bottleneck is identified and these echoes are used to determine the dominant dephasing process.

Generation of picosecond squeezed pulses using an all-solid-state cw mode-locked source

E. M. Daly, A.S. Bell, Erling Riis +1 more

We have produced squeezed states of light using a degenerate optical parametric amplifier pumped by an all-solid-state cw mode-locked laser source. The process resulted in squeezed light pulses of less than 3 ps in duration. Up to 0.7 dB of amplitude-squeezed light at 1047 nm and 0.5 dB of noise reduction in vacuum were observed directly. The inferred squeezing level in both cases, after all propagation losses in the detection system and the effects of spatial and temporal mode overlap had been taken into account, was 1.8 dB.

Picosecond response of a high−repetition−rate CS2 optical Kerr gate

Erich P. Ippen, Charles V. Shank

An optical Kerr gate is operated at high repetition rates using picosecond pulses from a mode−locked cw laser. A new mode of gate operation is demonstrated in which incremental transmission is linearly proportional to pump power. Direct temporal measurement of a 2.1−psec response time of the optical Kerr effect in CS2 is reported.
