A dynamical systems approach to Bohmian trajectories in a 2D harmonic oscillator

Abstract

Vortices are known to play a key role in the dynamics of the quantum trajectories defined within the framework of the de Broglie–Bohm formalism of quantum mechanics. It has been rigourously proved that the motion of a vortex in the associated velocity field can induce chaos in these trajectories, and numerical studies have explored the rich variety of behaviors that due to their influence can be observed. In this paper, we go one step further and show how the theory of dynamical systems can be used to construct a general and systematic classification of such dynamical behaviors. This should contribute to establish some firm grounds on which the studies on the intrinsic stochasticity of Bohm's quantum trajectories can be based. An application to the two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator is presented as an illustration.

Motion of vortices implies chaos in Bohmian mechanics

Wisniacki, D A, Pujals, E R

Bohmian mechanics is a causal interpretation of quantum mechanics in which particles describe trajectories guided by the wave function. The dynamics in the vicinity of nodes of the wave function, usually called vortices, is regular if they are at rest. However, vortices generically move during time evolution of the system. We show that this movement is the origin of chaotic behavior of quantum trajectories. As an example, our general result is illustrated numerically in the two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator. © EDP Sciences.

Vortex dynamics and their interactions in quantum trajectories

Diego A. Wisniacki, Enrique Ramiro Pujals, F. Borondo

Vortices are known to play a key role in many important processes in physics and chemistry. Here, we study vortices in connection with the quantum trajectories that can be defined in the framework provided by the de Broglie–Bohm formalism of quantum mechanics. In a previous work, it was shown that the presence of a single moving vortex is enough to induce chaos in these trajectories. Here, this situation is explored in more detail by discussing the relationship between Lyapunov exponents and the parameters characterizing the vortex dynamics. We also consider the issue when more than one vortex exists. In this case, the interaction among them can annihilate or create pairs of vortices with opposite vorticity. This phenomenon is analyzed from a dynamical point of view, showing how the size of the regular regions in phase space grows, as vortices disappear.

de Broglie–Bohm analysis of a nonlinear membrane: From quantum to classical chaos

Henrique Santos Lima, Matheus M. A. Paixão, Constantino Tsallis

Within the de Broglie-Bohm theory, we numerically study a generic two-dimensional anharmonic oscillator including cubic and quartic interactions in addition to a bilinear coupling term. Our analysis of the quantum velocity fields and trajectories reveals the emergence of dynamical vortices. In their vicinity, fingerprints of chaotic behavior such as unpredictability and sensitivity to initial conditions are detected. The simultaneous presence of the off-diagonal -kxy and nonlinear terms leads to robust quantum chaos very analogous to its classical version.

Chaos In 2D Bohmian Trajectories of Commensurate Harmonics Oscillators

Umair Abdul Halim, Chan Kar Tim, Nurisya Mohd Shah

Particle trajectories guided by the wave function are well-defined through Bohmian mechanics, which is a causal interpretation of quantum mechanics. Periodic and chaotic behaviours could be exhibited from the certain classical integrable systems that have been shown within this framework. In this study, we developed Mathematica programs to plot the Bohmian trajectories and Lyapunov exponents. These programs serve as computer experiments for numerical generation and illustration of the results. We show that the behaviours of commensurate two-dimensional harmonic oscillator systems are dependent on ratios of frequency.
