Abstract

Cavity electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is created in a three-level atomic system confined in a cavity and coupled to a free-space control laser and is manifested as a narrow transmission peak of a probe laser coupled into the cavity mode and tuned to the two-photon Raman resonance with the control laser. Cavity EIT can be observed with a control laser detuned from the atomic transition frequency in a range limited by the vacuum Rabi splitting of two cavity-atom normal modes. This leads to the broadband cavity EIT obtained in the coupled-cavity-atom system with a free-space, broadband control laser. We report an experimental observation of broadband cavity EIT in cold Rb atoms with a frequency-modulated control laser and discuss its application in multichannel and multifrequency light memory.

Coherent manipulation of quantum states in a coupled cavity-atom system

Yanhua Wang, Jinyin Wan, Bichen Zou +2 more

We study atomic coherence and interference in four-level atoms confined in an optical cavity and explores the interplay between cavity QED and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The destructive interference can be induced in the coupled cavity-atom system with a free-space control laser tuned to the normal mode resonance and leads to suppression of the normal mode excitation. Then by adding a pump laser coupled to the four-level atoms from free space, the control-laser induced destructive interference can be reversed and the normal mode excitation is restored. When the free-space control laser is tuned to the atomic resonance and forms a Λ-type EIT configuration with the cavity-atom system, EIT is manifested as a narrow transmission peak of a weak probe laser coupled into the cavity mode. With the free-space pump laser driving the cavity-confined atoms in a four-level configuration, the narrow transmission peak of the cavity EIT can be split into two peaks and the dressed intra-cavity dark states are created analogous to the dressed states in free space. We report experimental studies of such coherently coupled cavity-atom system realized with cold Rb atoms confined in an optical cavity and discuss possible applications in quantum nonlinear optics and quantum information science.

Atomic coherence and interference in a coupled atom–cavity system

Jiepeng Zhang, Gessler Hernandez, Yifu Zhu

When a coherently prepared atomic medium is confined in an optical cavity, the atomic coherence and interference manifested by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be manipulated and enhanced by the collective atom–cavity coupling and the cavity feedback. We present an experimental study of the light transmission through an optical cavity coupled with coherently prepared cold Rb atoms. In the frequency domain, the cavity transmission spectrum exhibits spectral peaks representing the cavity normal modes associated with the multi-atom vacuum Rabi splitting and the intra-cavity dark state manifested by the combined EIT effects of the absorption suppression and the steep normal dispersion. In the time domain, a light pulse coupled into the cavity mode propagates with a slow group velocity and the propagation time delay is significantly increased by the cavity feedback.

Observation of dressed intracavity dark states

Yanhua Wang, Jiepeng Zhang, Yifu Zhu

Cavity electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a coherently prepared cavity-atom system is manifested as a narrow transmission peak of a weak probe laser coupled into the cavity mode. We show that, with a resonant pump laser coupling the cavity-confined four-level atoms from free space, the narrow transmission peak of the cavity EIT is split into two peaks. The two peaks represent the dressed intracavity dark states and have a frequency separation approximately equal to the Rabi frequency of the free-space pump laser. We experimentally observed the dressed intracavity dark states in cold Rb atoms confined in a cavity, and the experimental results agree with theoretical calculations based on a semiclassical analysis.

Controllable double electromagnetically induced transparency in a closed four-level-loop cavity–atom system

Miaodi Guo, Xue-Mei Su

We present a theoretical study of an optical cavity coupled with single four-level atoms in closed loop formed via applied control lasers. The transmitted probe field from the cavity is analyzed. We show that the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the cavity and the normal mode splitting will be very different with changing the closed interaction phase and the intensity of the free-space control laser. This coupled cavity–atom system presents a variational double-EIT that comes from modulating the splitting of the dark state, which means that we could realize the gradual transfer between one EIT peak and two EIT peaks by adjusting the applied control lasers, and the normal mode splitting sidebands will shift slightly by changing the free-space control laser. This means that we could control the output cavity probe field more freely and it is easer to realize optical switch controlled by more parameters. We also depict the angular dispersion of the intracavity probe field in different free-space control laser. The large phase shift ( ) of the reflected intracavity probe field will be very useful for optical temporal differentiation and quantum phase gate.

White-light cavity based on coherent Raman scattering via normal modes of a coupled cavity-and-atom system

Jiepeng Zhang, Xiaogang Wei, Gessler Hernandez +1 more

We describe a white-light cavity scheme based on a cavity quantum electrodynamics system that consists of multiple three-level atoms confined in an optical cavity and coherently driven by a free-space, circularly polarized field. A linearly polarized field is coupled into the cavity mode and its two circular components induce coherent Raman transitions through the normal modes of the coupled atom-cavity system. One circular component of the cavity field experiences anomalous dispersion which enables broadband light transmission through the cavity. We present the experimental demonstration of the broadband light transmission through an optical cavity coupled to cold Rb atoms.

Electromagnetically induced transparency of single Λ-type three-level atoms in a high-finesse optical cavity

孙燕芬, Lei Tan, 徐岩

We study the features of electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in a single Λ-type three-level atom placed in a high-finesse cavity under the action of a coupling laser and a probe laser. Our calculations show that three transparency windows appear when the pump strength is large enough. This can be explained by the residual pump in the cavity mostly resulting in energy splitting. The level |3 is split into four slightly different energy levels, and interference takes place between the excitation pathways.Furthermore,it is also shown that the frequencies of the EIT windows can be tuned by changing the coupling field detuning 2,and that the reflection profile is very sensitive to the cavity field detuning △c.
