Extrapolated model potential for low-energy scattering of electrons from inert gas atoms, and Be, Mg, Zn, Cd, Hg

S. H. Patil

We have developed a model, l -dependent potential to describe the interaction of an electron with inert gas atoms, and Be, Mg, Zn, Cd, Hg, and their isoelectronic sequences. This potential is adjusted so as to produce bound states with experimental binding energies in isoelectronic sequences of Li I, Na I, K I, Rb I, Cs I and B I, Al I, Ga I, In I, Tl I, and extrapolated to get a potential for the interaction of an electron with inert gas atoms, and with Be, Mg, Zn, Cd, Hg. It provides reliable phase shifts and cross sections for e-inert gas atom, e-Be, e-Mg, e-Zn, e-Cd, e-Hg scattering. Particularly interesting are the signs of the scattering lengths, the changes in the signs of the s-wave phase shifts, and p-wave shape resonances at low energies.

Inelastic collisions between N2molecules and Hg atoms in the 63D1state

M. Barrat-Rambosson, Hélène Kucal

The cross sections for transfer of population from the Hg 6 3 D 1 level to the other levels of the 6s6d configuration, induced by collisions against N 2 molecules, are measured using, for the selective excitation of metastable 6 3 P 0 Hg atoms, a tunable dye laser with frequency doubling producing pulses of 2967 AA light. The following results are obtained: sigma ( 3 D 1 to 1 D 2 )=100+or-20 AA 2 , sigma ( 3 D 1 to 3 D 2 )=30+or-7 AA 2 , sigma ( 3 D 1 to 3 D 3 )=33+or-10 AA 2 , sigma ( 1 D 2 to q)=150+or-50 AA 2 , sigma ( 1 D 2 to q), being the cross section for population transfers from the 6 1 D 2 level to all Hg levels besides the 6 3 D 1 level.

Sensitized fluorescence in zinc, induced in collisions with excited Hg atoms

M. Czajkowski, L. Krause

The transfer of excitation energy, induced in inelastic collisions between excited Hg atoms and ground state Zn atoms, was studied using methods of sensitized fluorescence. Hg atoms in a low density Hg–Zn mixture were excited with Hg 2537 Å resonance radiation to the 63P1 state, and interacted with the Zn atoms which became collisionally excited to the 43P1 state and then decayed emitting sensitized fluorescence. Measurements of relative intensities of Hg 2537 Å resonance fluorescence and Zn 3076 Å sensitized fluorescence yielded the cross section of 5.9 × 10−2 Å2 for Hg(63P1) → Zn(43P1) excitation transfer. The addition of small quantities of N2 to the Hg–Zn vapor mixture enhanced the efficiency of the transfer. The cross section for quenching of the Zn 43P1 state by collisions with N2 was found to be 0.19 Å2.
