Abstract

Superconducting circuits provide one of the numerous current candidate routes for the realization of quantum computing (QC) technology. In this paper I review the basic physics behind this candidature and outline some superconducting QC proposals currently on the table, demonstrating their common origins. More detailed discussion of the proposals follows, assessing how they measure up to the “DiVincenzo checklist” for QC realizations and the current status of experiments.

Review of Superconducting Qubit Devices and Their Large-Scale Integration

Hiu Yung Wong

The superconducting qubit quantum computer is one of the most promising quantum computing architectures for large-scale integration due to its maturity and close proximity to the well-established semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure. From an education perspective, it also bridges classical microwave electronics and quantum electrodynamics. In this paper, we will review the basics of quantum computers, superconductivity, and Josephson junctions. We then introduce important technologies and concepts related to DiVincenzo's criteria, which are the necessary conditions for the superconducting qubits to work as a useful quantum computer. Firstly, we will discuss various types of superconducting qubits formed with Josephson junctions, from which we will understand the trade-off across multiple design parameters, including their noise immunity. Secondly, we will discuss different schemes to achieve entanglement gate operations, which are a major bottleneck in achieving more efficient fault-tolerant quantum computing. Thirdly, we will review readout engineering, including the implementations of the Purcell filters and quantum-limited amplifiers. Finally, we will discuss the nature and review the studies of two-level system defects, which are currently the limiting factor of qubit coherence time. DiVincenzo's criteria are only the necessary conditions for a technology to be eligible for quantum computing. To have a useful quantum computer, large-scale integration is required. We will review proposals and developments for the large-scale integration of superconducting qubit devices. By comparing with the application of electronic design automation (EDA) in semiconductors, we will also review the use of EDA in superconducting qubit quantum computer design, which is necessary for its large-scale integration.

Hirotaka Terai, Sunmi Kim, Taro Yamashita +2 more

Superconducting qubits are one of the promising hardware candidates for quantum computing, and the operation of quantum processors equipped with more than 1000 qubits have been reported. However, to achieve a meaningful quantum computation that has an advantage over classical computation, further improvement in gate fidelity and more precise control of circuit parameters are required, and many challenges remain in realizing such hardware. In this article, we summarize the current status and challenges of superconducting qubits with a focus on the circuit fabrication process and present our research and development of superconducting qubits using nitride superconductors.

Quantum Computing: Fundamentals, Implementations and Applications

Hilal Ahmad Bhat, Farooq Ahmad Khanday, Brajesh Kumar Kaushik +2 more

Quantum Computing is a technology, which promises to overcome the drawbacks of conventional CMOS technology for high density and high performance applications. Its potential to revolutionize today's computing world is attracting more and more researchers towards this field. However, due to the involvement of quantum properties, many beginners find it difficult to follow the field. Therefore, in this research note an effort has been made to introduce the various aspects of quantum computing to researchers, quantum engineers and scientists. The historical background and basic concepts necessary to understand quantum computation and information processing have been introduced in a lucid manner. Various physical implementations and potential application areas of quantum computation have also been discussed in this paper. Recent developments in each realization, in the context of the DiVincenzo criteria, including ion traps based quantum computing, superconducting quantum computing, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computing, spintronics and semiconductor based quantum computing have been discussed.

Quantum computing with superconducting circuits

Robert J. Schoelkopf

Quantum computation is a completely new and different paradigm for how to store and process information. It offers the possibility of exponential computational advantage for certain types of hard problems, but the hardware for implementing quantum algorithms is still at an early stage. The basic idea of quantum computing is to replace the ordinary binary bits of conventional computing with their quantum equivalent, or qubit. A qubit can be any quantum system whose states can be prepared and controlled, provided that we can then fabricate them in large quantities and then couple them to one another in prescribed ways. While there are several candidate technologies for building a quantum computer, one of the most promising is superconducting quantum circuits, operated at cryogenic temperatures approaching 0.01 K.
