Symmetry of Hamiltonians of quantum two-component systems: condensate of composite particles as an exact eigenstate

Abstract

A class of quantum many-body models of arbitrary dimension and arbitrary statistics of particles, for which exact eigenstates may be obtained, is found. It is assumed that: (i) models contain two (or 2m) kinds of particles with 'symmetric' matrix elements of pairwise interaction (all potentials coincide with each other to within a sign and wavefunctions of free particles of two components coincide to within a phase factor; pairwise interactions are otherwise arbitrary); (ii) there exists the degeneracy of (the sum) of free-particle spectra. Exact many-body eigenstates correspond to a condensation of non-interacting composite particles ('excitons') which are not exactly bosons, into a single quantum state, and to excitations over the condensate. The origin of the possibility of exact solution is the symmetry under the continuous rotations in the isospin space of two components, to which Bogolubov canonical transformations with parameters u, nu independent of momentum correspond. The class of such models comprises, in particular, two-dimensional electron-hole systems in a strong magnetic field.

1 Bose-Einstein condensates in symmetry breaking states

Yvan Castin, Christopher P. Herzog

We consider two models of interacting Bose gases: a gas of spin one particles in the ground state of a cubic box and a one-dimension Bose gas with contact interactions. We show how to calculate exact eigenstates of the corresponding N-body Hamiltonians. Both models share the property of not leading to the formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate, even at zero temperature, in the strict sense of the existence of a single one-particle state with a macroscopic population. We show that a lot of physical insight can be gained on these two model systems by using the usual Hartree-Fock mean field approach: in this approximation, that we test against the exact result, everything happens as if a single realization of the system was a Bose-Einstein condensate in a state phi breaking the rotational or translational symmetry, and varying in a random way for any new experimental realization.

Exactly Solvable Many-Boson Model

R. W. Richardson

A many-boson model is formulated and expressions for its exact eigenstates and energies are obtained for both an arbitrary finite and an infinite number of bosons. The Hamiltonian of the model contains interactions between bosons whose momenta have equal magnitudes but opposite directions. The matrix elements of this interaction are taken to be a constant over a range of momenta surrounding k = 0. The ground state of the 2N-particle system is shown to be a product of N pair-creation operators acting on the vacuum state. Each of these pair-creation operators depends upon one of N parameters which are called pair energies. The N pair energies are shown to satisfy a coupled system of nonlinear algebraic equations. The energy of the state is the sum of the pair energies and the occupation probabilities of the single-particle levels are given as simple functions of the pair energies. Similar results are derived for the excited states of the system and for the states of an odd number of particles. These results are valid for both a repulsive and an attractive interaction, since they only depend upon the form of the interaction. The equations are solved algebraically for two model systems. The first of these is one whose single-particle kinetic energy takes on only one value. The equations for this system are solved for an arbitrary interaction strength and it is shown that the pair energies are proportional to the zeros of certain Laguerre polynomials. The second system is one in which the single-particle kinetic energy can take on two values. The equations for this system are solved in the strong repulsive-interaction limit and it is shown that the pair energies are proportional to the zeros of certain Jacobi polynomials. The excitation energies of this second system are shown to be proportional to 1/n and the occupations of the two single-particle levels in the ground state are shown to be proportional to n, where n is the total number of particles. For a repulsive interaction and an arbitrary single-particle spectrum, the algebraic equations for the pair energies are converted into an approximate integral equation for the density of roots which is accurate to order 1/n. This integral equation is solved for a strong interaction which, in the context of this model, means an interaction whose strength is greater than a constant times 1/V⅔ in the limit of a large volume. From this solution, the following results are obtained: (1) the lowest two single-particle levels have occupations of order n; (2) the excitation spectrum is that of a set of noninteracting quasiparticles; and (3) the quasiparticle spectrum has two zeros corresponding to the lowest two single-particle levels. Apart from the presence of two zeros, the quasiparticle spectrum does not differ significantly from that of the noninteracting particles.

New Class of Solvable and Integrable Many-Body Models

R. W. Richardson

Integrability conditions for systems of bosons or fermions with seniority conserving hamiltonians are derived. The conditions are shown to be invariant under a large class of transformations of the interaction matrix elements. Previously published integrable models are shown to satisfy these conditions and the existence of a new class of integrable models is demonstrated. The number of free parameters in the interaction in these models equals the number of single particle levels plus 3 . Equations for the energy eigenstates and eigenvalues are derived and the eigenvalues of the complete set of two-body integrals of the motion are given for the new class. Some two-body correlations in these eigenstates are derived from the integrals of the motion.

Novel Correlations in Two Dimensions: Some Exact Solutions

M. V. N. Murthy, R. K. Bhaduri, Diptiman Sen

We construct a new many-body Hamiltonian with two- and three-body interactions in two space dimensions and obtain its exact many-body ground state for an arbitrary number of particles. This ground state has a novel pairwise correlation. A class of exact solutions for the excited states is also found. These excited states display an energy spectrum similar to the Calogero-Sutherland model in one dimension. The model reduces to an analog of the well-known trigonometric Sutherland model when projected on to a circular ring.

Exactly Solvable Bose and Fermi many-body Hamiltonian with higher order terms based on the S2 symmetry

Feng Pan, L. R. Dai

It is shown that the two component Fermi or Bose many-body Hamiltonian, such as the two-orbit fermion pairing and two-site Bose-Hubbard model with arbitrary finite higher order terms can always be solved exactly by using Bethe ansatz vector construction based on the permutation of two components of bosons or fermions involved. As examples of the solution, the extended one-dimensional dimer Bose -Hubbard model with multi-body interactions and the mean-fifield plus orbit-dependent non-separable pairing model with two non-degenerate j-orbits are demonstrated with the eigenstates and the eigen-energy and the related Bethe ansatz equations. It is shown that the main feature of the solutions lies in the fact that the Bethe ansatz vectors can be expressed in terms of binomials of the boson or fermion operators times the related symmetric functions. As the consequence, two-component quantum many-body systems , such as the extended Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model with higher-order interactions, can be solved in a similar way.

Eigenstates of the L=0 , Charge- and Spin-Independent Pairing Hamiltonian. I. Seniority-Zero States

R. W. Richardson

Equations for all the seniority-zero eigenstates of $2N$ nucleons in an arbitrary charge- and spin-independent potential well and interacting through charge- and spin-independent pairing forces are derived. These equations are solved exactly for a large number of states of this system. The interaction in this Hamiltonian is effective in the $L=0$ states of the two-nucleon system, and its strength is independent of the remaining quantum numbers of the two nucleons. We solve our equations exactly for those states whose wave functions are totally symmetric functions of the spin-isospin coordinates of the $N$ $L=0$ pairs of nucleons in the state. The wave functions of these states factor into a spin-isospin-dependent part and a spatially dependent part. The spin-isospin-dependent part of one of these wave functions is an eigenvector of three tridiagonal matrices which insure that the state is a spin, isospin, and supermultiplet eigenstate, respectively. Explicit expressions are given for the eigenvalues of these three matrices in terms of the quantum numbers of the state. The spatially-dependent part of one of these wave functions is given explicitly in terms of $N$ parameters which we call pair energies. These pair energies are shown to satisfy $N$ coupled algebraic equations which depend parametrically upon the supermultiplet quantum numbers of the state. An expression for the occupation probabilities of the levels of the single-particle well is given. Throughout this work, an arbitrary splitting of the single-particle levels is treated exactly.
