The role of multiparticle correlations and Cooper pairing in the formation of molecules in an ultracold gas of Fermi atoms with a negative scattering length

V. S. Babichenko, Yu. Kagan

The influence of multiparticle correlation effects and Cooper pairing in an ultracold Fermi gas with a negative scattering length on the formation rate of molecules is investigated. Cooper pairing is shown to cause the formation rate of molecules to increase, as distinct from the influence of Bose-Einstein condensation in a Bose gas on this rate. This trend is retained in the entire range of temperatures below the critical one.

Scattering resonances in a degenerate Fermi gas

Katharine J. Challis, Nicolai Gayle Nygaard, Klaus Mølmer

We consider elastic single-particle scattering from a one-dimensional trapped two-component superfluid Fermi gas when the incoming projectile particle is identical to one of the confined species. Our theoretical treatment is based on the Hartree-Fock ground state of the trapped gas and a configuration-interaction description of the excitations. We determine the scattering phase shifts for the system and predict Fano-type scattering resonances that are a direct consequence of interatomic pairing. We describe the main characteristics of the scattering resonances and make a comparison with the results of BCS mean-field theory.

Multiparticle instability in a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas

Thomas M. Whitehead, G. J. Conduit

Weak attractive interactions in a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas induce a multiparticle instability, binding multiple fermions together. The maximum binding energy per particle is achieved when the ratio of the number of up- and down-spin particles in the instability is equal to the ratio of the up- and down-spin densities of states in momentum at the Fermi surfaces, to utilize the variational freedom of all available momentum states. We derive this result using an analytical approach, and verify it using exact diagonalization. The multiparticle instability extends the Cooper pairing instability of balanced Fermi gases to the imbalanced case, and could form the basis of a many-body state, analogously to the construction of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity out of Cooper pairs.
