String correlations of the antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain: Excited states and magnetic-field effects

Abstract

We calculate energies and wave functions of S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with single-ion anisotropy in a symmetry-breaking external magnetic field. From results for the string correlation function for low-lying excited states we identify these states as solitons with respect to the hidden string order. For finite anisotropic chains we investigate the transition to the fully magnetized state at high magnetic fields and conclude that Bose condensation in an external magnetic field occurs also for the anisotropic chain.

Phase Diagram and Excitation Spectrum of S = 1 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains

H.-J. Mikeska

We investigate ground-state and low-lying excited states of the S = 1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with exchange anisotropy, single-ion anisotropy and biquadratic exchange and with free boundary conditions. We present an approximate mapping of the S = 1 model to an effective S = 1/2 chain in an external magnetic field, which can be solved exactly in several limiting cases. We obtain results for the phase diagram, correlation functions and the excitation spectrum. The transition to the Haldane phase is related to the condensation of the lowest soliton modes and the hidden order parameter of the Haldane phase is identified as transverse long-range order in the effective S = 1/2 chain.

Excitations for the one-dimensional S = 1 pseudo-Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

E. V. Orlenko, Fedor E. Orlenko, George G. Zegrya

We are interested in the anisotropic S=1 antiferromagnetic chain. System of particles with an arbitrary spin is described directly from the first principles, based on the symmetry law. The ground state of the one-dimensional S=1 pseudo-Heisenberg antiferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy is calculated. Excitations of the chain in the form of nonlinear spin waves and, in particular, the possibility of a soliton solution is considered.

Low-temperature properties of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain

Han-ting Wang, Jue-Lian Shen, Kui-Ru Li +1 more

We study the low-temperature properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain in an external magnetic field by an extended self-consistent mean-field approach developed earlier based on Anderson's spin-wave theory. At fixed magnetic field, the excitation energies increase, while the correlation length decreases with the increasing temperatures. The magnetic field leads to the Zeeman splitting of the excitations with the upper branch going up and the lower branch going down with the increasing fields. At zero temperature the correlation length is a constant and the gap closes at a critical magnetic field, while at finite temperature the correlation length decreases and a small gap seems to survive at the critical magnetic field. These results are consistent with those of other theoretical studies and agree with the experiments quite well. Also, we show that the system shares very similar properties with the valence-bond-solid state even at finite temperatures. The magnetization is studied and the coexistence of the hidden long-range order and the field-induced ferromagnetic order is discussed.

Soliton Lattice State of Spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Antiferromagnetic Chain in an External Magnetic Field

Wang Zhi-Guo, Yumei Zhang, Gao Yang

One-dimensional spin- anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a longitudinal external magnetic field is studied using bosonization method and Gaussian wave functional techniques which take account of the spatial structure. The magnetization and the energy of the ground state which depend on the external magnetic field are calculated. For the case of anisotropic parameter , increasing of the external magnetic field above the threshold value leads to the appearance of the soliton lattice state in the ground state, until to an another critical field where the ground state changes to the canted state phase. Therefore, with increasing external magnetic field, the ground state experiences four different phases successively, namely, antiferromagnetic Ising, soliton lattice state canted state, and magnetization saturated phases. When , the soliton lattice state phase does not appear, with increasing external field, the paramagnetic phase smoothly evolves into the canted state phase, finally reaches magnetization saturated phase.

Ground-state properties of antiferromagnetic anisotropic S=1 Heisenberg spin chains

D. Peters, Ian P. McCulloch, Walter Selke

Using (infinite) density-matrix renormalization-group techniques, ground-state properties of antiferromagnetic $S=1$ Heisenberg spin chains with exchange and single-site anisotropies in an external field are studied. The phase diagram is known to display a plenitude of interesting phases. We elucidate quantum phase transitions between the supersolid and spin-liquid phases as well as the spin-liquid and ferromagnetic phases. Analyzing spin-correlation functions in the spin-liquid phase, commensurate and (two distinct) incommensurate regions are identified.
