Abstract

Resonance scattering with formation of Feshbach resonance in the presence of laser radiation in the case of the decays in open and closed channels is considered. The presence of the resonant laser radiation leads to additional channels of the elastic and inelastic scattering. The cross sections of the elastic and inelastic scattering are obtained which show that they are determined by two interconnected phases of resonance scattering and interference phenomena are observed.

Manipulating Feshbach resonances in collisions of atoms in laser radiation field

A. D. Gazazyan, E. A. Gazazyan, V. O. Chaltykyan

Collisions of atoms with formation of Feshbach resonances in the presence of laser field are considered. The elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections are calculated. The laser field leads to second resonance in elastic scattering, broadening of resonances, and arising of interference between resonant and potential scattering. The effects associated with interference of the two channels of decay of bound system of two atoms (a molecule) in laser field are studied. It is shown that if the energy equals that of the lower stable Stark-shifted level plus the energy of two photons, the resonance is quenched. It is also shown that with the increase in two-photon effective interaction the pattern of resonance scattering changes essentially.

Interference phenomena at the elastic collision of atoms with formation of the Feshbach resonance in the presence of laser radiation field

E. A. Gazazyan, A. D. Gazazyan, V. O. Chaltykyan

Resonant scattering of atoms with formation of the Feshbach resonance in the presence of a laser radiation coupling the levels of two bound atoms (a molecule) is considered. The laser field leads to a second resonance in scattering and broadening of resonances, which facilitates the possibility of experimental observation of asymmetry of the total scattering cross-section arising because of interference between resonant and potential scatterings. The effects associated with interference of the two channels of decay of a bound system of two atoms (a molecule) in the laser field are studied. An expression is obtained for the scattering length in collision of two cold atoms in the field of laser radiation.

Influence of external magnetic and laser radiation fields on Feshbach resonances in collision of atoms

E. A. Gazazyan, A. D. Gazazyan, V. O. Chaltykyan

We study collision of two atoms with formation of Feshbach resonance at combined interaction with the external magnetic field and laser radiation. In cases of one- and two-photon resonances of laser radiation with two discrete vibrational molecular levels, we show that Feshbach resonances appear at interaction of external magnetic field with dressed states formed via Autler-Townes effect. In addition, in case of one-photon resonance the lower vibrational molecular state is coupled by laser radiation with the continuum of the elastic channel and forms laser-induced Feshbach resonance via both Autler-Townes effect and LICS mechanism. We study the combined process of formation of Feshbach resonances; this enables the control of Feshbach resonance by varying the magnetic field and intensity and frequency of laser radiation. We obtain the cross-sections of elastic and inelastic scattering and show that quenching of resonance occurs at the energy equal to that of the systems ground state. Dependence of the cross-sections on the magnetic field and laser intensity is examined in detail. In all considered cases, the scattering length is obtained depending on the magnetic and laser fields are studied. In the absence of magnetic interaction if the hyperfine substates of the quasibound state in the closed channel and those of individual colliding atoms in the open channel are the same, Feshbach resonances may arise via weak interaction between nuclear and electronic motions, which leads to transitions between electronic states. The obtained results can be employed in new studies of collisions of cold atoms, e.g., of alkali metal atoms and for interpretation of new experiments in BECs.

Collision of atoms under action of external magnetic and laser radiation fields with formation of Fano-Feshbach resonances

E. A. Gazazyan, A. D. Gazazyan, V. O. Chaltykyan

We investigate collision of two atoms in an external magnetic field and in the field of laser radiation with formation of Fano-Feshbach resonances. At one-photon resonance of laser radiation with two discrete vibrational states of molecule the dressed states are formed (Autler-Townes effect) which form Fano-Feshbach resonances in interaction with the external magnetic field. In addition, the lower molecular vibrational state is coupled with the continuum of the elastic channel via also LICS (laser-induced continuum structure) forming laser-induced resonance. We obtain cross-sections of elastic and inelastic resonant scattering and expression for the scattering length depending on the external magnetic and laser radiation fields.

Formation and stimulated photodissociation of metastable molecules with emission of photon at the collision of two atoms in a laser radiation field

E. A. Gazazyan, A. D. Gazazyan

Abstract The formation of metastable molecules (Feshbach resonances) at the collision of two atoms and subsequent stimulated transition to a lower unbound electronic molecular state, with emission of a photon of the laser radiation has been investigated. This can develop, in particular, for Rb 2 molecules due to resonance scattering of two Rb atoms. This process is a basis for the creation of excimer lasers. Expressions have been obtained for the cross sections of elastic and inelastic resonance scattering and the intensity of the stimulated emission of the photons.

Feshbach resonances in ultracold atomic and molecular collisions: threshold behaviour and suppression of poles in scattering lengths

Jeremy M. Hutson

In the absence of inelastic scattering, Feshbach resonances produce poles in scattering lengths and very large peaks in elastic cross-sections. However, inelastic scattering removes the poles. Whenever the resonant state is coupled comparably to the elastic and inelastic channels, the scattering length exhibits only a small oscillation and peaks in cross-sections are significantly suppressed. A resonant scattering length is defined to characterize the amplitude of the oscillation, and is shown to be small for many collisions of ultracold molecules. The results suggest that cross-sections for some ultracold collision processes will be much less sensitive to details of the potential than has been expected.
