Abstract

We study the entropy and the entanglement of an electromagnetically induced transparency system. The quantum entanglement between the atom and the two quantized laser fields is discussed by using quantum reduced entropy and that between the two quantized laser fields by using quantum relative entropy. We also examine whether influences of EIT on entropy and quantum entanglement of the system considered occur or not. Our results show that the minimum value of the atomic reduced entropy may be regarded as an entropy criterion on the electromagnetically induced transparency occurring.

Conditions to preserve quantum entanglement of quadrature fluctuation fields in electromagnetically induced transparency media

You-Lin Chuang, Ray‐Kuang Lee

We study the propagation of quantum fields through an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium with initially two squeezed and one coherent states. Conditions to preserve and to establish nonseparation criteria for perturbed quantized fluctuation fields are demonstrated. The results in this work provide a guideline for using EIT media as quantum light devices.

Quantum Theory of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Daniel F. Walls, Klaus M. Gheri

There have recently been several experiments which have observed electromagnetically induced transparency in atomic systems(1,2) This is based on the population trapping which may occur when two lower states are coupled to a common upper state by two laser fields. Due to destructive quantum mechanical interference this gives rise to a nonabsorbing resonance. Thus a strongly absorbing atomic transition may be rendered opaque.

Nonlinear optical properties of an electromagnetically induced transparency medium interacting with two quantized fields

Le‐Man Kuang, Guang‐Hong Chen, Yong-Shi Wu

We study linear and nonlinear optical properties of an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium interacting with two quantized laser fields in the adiabatic EIT case. We show that the EIT medium exhibits normal dispersion. Kerr and higher-order nonlinear refractive index coefficients are also calculated in a completely analytical form. It is indicated that the EIT medium exhibits giant resonantly enhanced nonlinearities. We discuss the response of the EIT medium to nonclassical light fields and find that the polarization vanishes when the probe laser is initially in a nonclassical state of no single-photon coherence.

Laser oscillation and light entanglement via dressed-state phase-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency

Jingyan Li, Xiangming Hu

We show that it is possible to achieve laser oscillation and two-mode entanglement by using dressed-state phase-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a double $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system. Under certain conditions, two beams of bichromatic fields induce the depopulation of a coherent superposition state of the two excited states and the quantum beat of a pair of cavity fields. While one of two beams of bichromatic fields dresses the atoms, the other and the pair of cavity fields are in phase-controlled EIT interaction with the dressed atoms. On the basis of this, the pair of cavity fields not only operates well above threshold and exhibit subshot noise but also is in an entangled state. This mechanism suggests an efficient way to achieve bright entangled source of light.

Generating entangled state of Bose–Einstein condensate using electromagnetically induced transparency

Song-Song Li

We put forward a scheme on how to generate entangled state of Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). It is shown that we can rapidly generate the entangled state in the dynamical process and the entangled state maintained a long time interval. It is also shown that the better entangled state can be generated by decreasing coupling strengths of two classical laser fields, increasing two-photon detuning and total number of atoms.

Electromagnetically induced transparency with coherent and stochastic fields

Abraham G. Kofman

This paper deals with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), i.e., a significant suppression of absorption at a material transition (in the form of a dip in an absorption spectrum), due to a strong laser field, coupling the excited level with an auxiliary excited (unpopulated) level. A comprehensive theory of EIT is developed for the cases of coherent and Markovian phase- and amplitude-phase-fluctuating coupling fields. For a coherent coupling field, a shift of the absorption minimum from the two-photon resonance is revealed in the off-resonance case. Two models of amplitude-phase fluctuating fields are considered: the chaotic field and the uncorrelated-jump field. Closed analytical expressions for EIT line shape are derived and exact limits of different regimes of EIT are obtained, the emphasis being on the near-resonance case. The main conclusion is that an amplitude-phase-fluctuating field can induce significant transparency, though reduced in comparison to a phase-fluctuating field of the same average intensity and bandwidth. EIT decreases with the increase of the bandwidth for all stochastic models considered. EIT with a chaotic field is generally less pronounced than EIT with an uncorrelated-jump field of the same intensity and bandwidth, the difference increasing with the field intensity. The possibility of experimental verification of the results obtained is discussed.
