Phase space path integrals in Monte Carlo quantum dynamics

Stavros Caratzoulas, Philip Pechukas

In this article we present two phase space path integrals in terms of coherent states. The first one is derived in a standard fashion but using a nonstandard resolution of the identity in terms of coherent states with different width parameters. The second path integral emerges from a novel phase space representation in terms of coherent states distributed on n-dimensional manifolds embedded in the 2n-dimensional phase space of an n-degree-of-freedom system. These states are shown to form locally complete basis sets since we show that fairly smooth and localized functions can be expanded in terms of them in a unique way. In this representation the time evolution operator can be cast in the form of a phase space path integral. Both path integrals can be evaluated by straightforward implementation of Monte Carlo methods. In both cases the probability amplitude between two phase points turns out to be proportional to the average of the phase, eih∫(p dq−H dt), over a Markov process of phase space paths consisting of classical trajectories interrupted at intervals by Gaussian ‘‘quantum jumps.’’ The numerical evaluation of these expressions through importance sampling is demonstrated.

Phase operator problem and infinitesimal analysis

Masanao Ozawa

To find an operator representation of the phase variable of a single-mode electromagnetic field, the Schrodinger representation is extended to a larger Hilbert space including states with infinite excitation by nonstandard analy- sis, so that the self-adjoint phase operator is acting on the extended Hilbert space. It is shown that this phase operator is a Naimark extension of the optimal probability operator-valued measure for the phase parameter already known in the quantum estimation theory, and is naturally considered as the controversial limit of the phase operators on finite dimensional spaces recently proposed by Pegg and Barnett.Eventually, two of recent promising attempts to obtain the correct statistics of the phase variable in quantum mechanics is synthesized in the present framework based on new mathematical ideas concerning the number system including infinite and infinitesimal numbers.

Time Dependent Variational Principle and Coherent State Orbits for a Trapped Ion

Bogdan M. Mihalcea

Spectral properties of the Hamiltonian function which characterizes a trapped ion are investigated. In order to study semiclassical dynamics of trapped ions, coherent state orbits are introduced as sub-manifolds of the quantum state space, with the Kähler structure induced by the transition probability. The time dependent variational principle (TDVP) is applied on coherent states' orbits. The Hamilton equations of motion on Kähler manifolds of the type of classical phase spaces naturally arise. The associated classical Hamiltonian is obtained from the expected values on symplectic coherent states of the quantum Hamiltonian. Spectral information is thus coded within the phase portrait. We deal with the bosonic realization of the Lie algebra of the SU(1,1) group, which we particularize for the case of an ion confined in a combined, Paul and Penning trap. This formalism can be applied to Hamiltonians which are nonlinear in the infinitesimal generators of a dynamical symmetry group, such as the case of ions confined in electrodynamic traps. Discrete quasienergy spectra are obtained and the corresponding quasienergy states are explicitly realized as coherent states parameterized by the stable solutions of the corresponding classical equations of motion. A correspondence between quantum and classical stability domains is thus established, using the Husimi representation.
