Abstract

We propose a simple single-layer magnetic microtrap configuration which can trap an array of magnetically-trapped Bose–Einstein condensate. The configuration consists of two series of parallel wires perpendicular to each other and all of the crossing points are cut off for maintaining the uniformity of the current. We analyse the trapping potential, the position of trapping centres and the uniformity of the array of the traps. The trapping depth and trapping frequency with different parameters are also calculated. Lastly, the effect of the cut-off crossing points, dissipate power, chip production are introduced concisely.

Foil-based atom chip for Bose–Einstein condensates

Chris J. Vale, Ben Upcroft, Matthew J. Davis +2 more

We describe a novel method of fabricating atom chips that are well suited to the production and manipulation of atomic Bose–Einstein condensates. Our chip was created using a silver foil and simple micro-cutting techniques without the need for photolithography. It can sustain larger currents than conventional chips, and is compatible with the patterning of complex trapping potentials. A near pure Bose–Einstein condensate of 4 × 10 4 87 Rb atoms has been created in a magnetic microtrap formed by currents through wires on the chip. We have observed the fragmentation of atom clouds in close proximity to the silver conductors. The fragmentation has different characteristic features to those seen with copper conductors.

Magnetic Surface Microtraps for Two—Species Bose—Einstein Condensations

胡建军, 印建平

We propose a novel magnetic surface microtrap(i.e. a double Z-wire trap) for the study of two-species Bose-Einstein condensations. The spatial distributions of the magnetic fields from the double Z-wire configurations and their gradients and curvatures are calculated and analysed. The result shows that the proposed surface trap has double magnetic wells and can be continuously changed into a single-well trap be reducing the current in a straight wire, and the maximum field gradient greater than 5×10^4G/cm and the maximum field curvature (at each trap centre) greater than 2.5×10^7G/cm^2 can be generated in our double-well traps, which can be used to realize two-species Bose-Einstein condensations and to study the properties of double-well Bose-Einstein condensations and so on

Single layer atom chip for magnetically trapping one-dimensional array of ultracold atoms

Cheng Feng, Bo Yan, Ke Min +1 more

We propose a wire configuration to create a one-dimensional (1D) array of magnetic microtraps for trapping ultracold atoms. The configuration is formed by replacing the central part of the Z-wire pattern with a zigzag wire. We simulate the performance of this pattern by the finite element method which can take both the width and depth of the wire into consideration. The result of simulation shows that this configuration can create magnetic microtraps which can be separated and combined by changing the bias magnetic field. We manage to split the Z-wire trap and prove that a similar result can occur for the new wire configuration. The fabrication processes of the atom chip are also introduced. Finally we discuss the loading method.

A novel controllable double-layer magnetic lattice with cold atoms

恽旻, 印建平

We propose a novel array of controllable double-well magnetic microtraps for cold atoms by using an array of square current-carrying wires and two additional bias magnetic fields. Arrays of double layer magnetooptical traps (MOTs) and Ioffe traps can be constructed by using same wire configurations and different currents and bias fields. Furthermore, the array of double-well magnetic microtraps can be continuously evolved as an array of single-well magnetic microtraps by reducing the currents in the wires. Our study shows that our scheme can be used to realize a controllable double-layer magnetic lattice with cold atoms, to form array of Bose-Einstein condensations (BECs), or to study atom interference, and so on.
