THE S = 1 QUANTUM SPIN CHAIN WITH PURE BIQUADRATIC EXCHANGE

Abstract

The S = 1 quantum spin chain with pure biquadratic exchange has 2-strings that behave in the same way as 1-strings (magnons) in other chains. An exact partial mapping exists from this system to an integrable S = 1/2 XXZ system. The ground state is not included in the mapping for finite N, but appears to be the same in the thermodynamic limit. The elementary excitations may also be deduced.

The S=1 quantum spin chain with pure biquadratic exchange

John B. Parkinson

States of the pure biquadratic quantum spin chain with up to four deviations are calculated exactly for arbitrary chain length. The four-deviation states have a Bethe ansatz form and consist of two interacting two-strings. They have the same form as two-deviation states of an integrable S=1/2 XXZ model. It is found that states with more than four deviations also map onto corresponding S=1/2 states. The ground states of the two systems are not the same for finite N, but appear to become the same in the limit N to infinity .

On the integrability of the S=1 quantum spin chain with pure biquadratic exchange

John B. Parkinson

States of the pure biquadratic S=1 quantum spin chain with more than one deviation are considered. An expression for the wave function for an interacting pair of 2-strings has been calculated in the Bethe ansatz form. It is shown that there is a partial mapping of states of multiple 2-strings onto the states of the anisotropic S= 1 / 2 quantum spin chain (XXZ model) which is known to be integrable. The mapping does not include the ground state, however. Other types of state with multiple deviations are also discussed.

The statistical mechanics of the related S=1/2anisotropic and S=1 pure biquadratic quantum spin chains

I. D. Paczek, John B. Parkinson

The authors consider a quantum spin chain with S= 1 / 2 and anisotropic exchange (XXZ model) with Delta =- 3 / 2 . This integrable system has a partial mapping to an S=1 chain with pure biquadratic exchange. They calculate the magnetisation curves at zero temperature which are identical for the two systems. They also use the integral equations obtained by Gaudin to study the specific heat as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The results are compared with numerical calculations for short chains of the S=1 system. The maximum occurs at approximately the same position for the two systems, but the shapes of the curves differ considerably.

Spin-1 biquadratic chain: Magnetization curve (abstract)

J. C. Bonner

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) s=1 chain with biquadratic exchange coupling has recently been the subject of considerable attention, and some controversy. Theoretical arguments by Affleck that the model has dimerized character associated with a small spectral excitation gap have not received unanimous support from numerical calculations. For finite systems the field-dependent dispersion spectra are interesting and informative concerning the nature of the model. The excitations divide into two classes having very different character, corresponding to SzT even and SzT odd. Reflection symmetry about k=π/2 is apparent if states with a given total spin ST, rather than SzT, are plotted as a function of wavevector k, consistent with the Affleck prediction of dimerized character. The high degeneracy of the eigenstates reflects the existence of new symmetry operators which (a) shift the SzT value, (b) change wave vector k to π/2−k, and (c) shift the total spin quantum ST, of the energy eigenstates. Parkinson has recently observed that finite N states with SzT even and SzT≥2 map into states of the finite N s= 1/2 XXZ model at a special value of uniaxial anisotropy. Barber and Batchelor (unpublished) have shown the existence of an analytic mapping between states of the s=1 biquadratic chain and the 2D 9-state Potts model. They further show that all states of the Parkinson s= 1/2 XXZ model map into states of the s=1 biquadratic model. Hence, they find the ground state and first excited state energies exactly, and verify the Affleck picture. Their approach falls short of establishing complete integrability, however. Numerical studies on finite chains indicate that the T=0 magnetization curve is determined by the lowest-energy states for given SzT even, which are states of the s= 1/2 XXZ chain. Hence the magnetization curve of the s=1 AFM biquadratic chain is the same as the analytically known magnetization curve of the s= 1/2 XXZ chain!

The S=1 quantum spin chain with equal Heisenberg and biquadratic exchange in a magnetic field

John B. Parkinson

The S=1 quantum spin chain with equal Heisenberg and biquadratic exchange was shown by Sutherland to be integrable. In this paper the equations obtained by Sutherland are solved numerically to obtain the behaviour at zero temperature in a magnetic field. It is found that there is an additional phase change at a lower field than the spin flop field. This new phase change marks the boundary between a regime in which the ground state contains only atoms with S z =1, 0 and one in which 1, 0 and -1 are present. The form of the elementary excitations in the two regimes is discussed and the possibility of a similar phase change in the pure Heisenberg model is considered.

Magnetic field properties of the integrable S=1 isotropic quantum spin chain

John B. Parkinson, J. C. Bonner

The integrable S=1 isotropic quantum spin chain of N atoms, introduced by Takhtajan (1982) and Bubujian (1983), is studied as a function of magnetisation and hence of magnetic field. The methods used are (i) direct numerical diagonalisation for N<or=12, (ii) numerical solution of the Bethe ansatz equations for N=6, 12, 16, 20, 40, (iii) analytic solution of the Bethe ansatz equations for N to infinity . The authors obtain results for the multiple string structure using the first two of these methods, showing the dominance of two-strings in the ground state and elementary excitations. Based on this they calculate the magnetisation as a function of field in the thermodynamic limit, over the whole spin-flop regime. They observe a tracking soft mode in the finite N results and also an energy gap which tends to zero as N to infinity . Their conclusion is that the system behaves much more like the integrable S= 1 / 2 Heisenberg model than the nonintegrable S=1 Heisenberg model.
