Two-photon physics with quantum-dot biexcitons

Stefan Schumacher, A. Zrenner

Emitters based on semiconductor quantum dots are promising sources for both single photons and pairs of polarization-entangled photons. Typically, single photons are generated through a photon emission event bringing the electronic system from a single-exciton state back to the ground state. In the case of entangled photons two photons are generated through a cascaded emission from the biexciton to either one of the single-exciton states and then back to the ground state. Alternatively, emission of two photons can also be achieved through a higher-order two-photon process bringing the quantum dot directly from the biexciton state (through a virtual intermediate state) back to the ground state. Here we discuss in particular how this two-photon process can lead to certain conceptual advantages in both the generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs and generation of single photons.

Polarization Properties of Quantum-Dot-Based Single Photon Sources

Han Shuo, Hao Zhi-Biao, Yi Luo

Polarization properties of single photons emitted by optical pumping from a single quantum dot (QD) are studied by using a four-level system model. The model is capable of explaining the polarization uncertainty observed in single photon emission experiments. It is found that the dependence of photon emission efficiency and polarization visibility on pump power are opposite in general cases. By employing QDs with small size and strong carrier confinement, the photon polarization visibility under high pump power can be improved. In addition, embedding a QD into a well designed microcavity is also found to be favourable, whereas the trade-off between high polarization visibility and multi-photon emission is noted.

Polarization entanglement visibility of photon pairs emitted by a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity

J. I. Perea, C. Tejedor

We study the photon emission from a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity. Incoherent pumping of its excitons and biexciton provokes the emission of leaky and cavity modes. By solving a master equation we obtain the correlation functions required to compute the spectrum and the relative efficiency among the emission of pairs and single photons. A quantum regime appears for low pumping and large rate of emission. By means of a post-selection process, a two beams experiment with different linear polarizations could be performed producing a large polarization entanglement visibility precisely in the quantum regime.
