Series expansion study of first- and second-order phase transitions in a model with multispin coupling

Abstract

The type of phase transition in a chain of Ising spins with multispin interaction is studied in a transverse field, using strong- and weak-coupling expansions. The transition is shown to be of first order if more than three spins are coupled. The critical exponents for the three-spin coupling model are estimated.

Critical properties of an S=1 multispin coupling Ising model

Ferenc Iglói, D. Kapor, M. J. Škrinjaŕ

Strong and weak coupling series expansions are used to investigate the critical properties of the S=1 multispin coupling Ising chain in the presence of a transverse field. The order of the transition goes from second order to first order when more than three spins are coupled. According to the numerical results the two-spin and three-spin coupling models belong to the Ising and the four-state Potts universality classes, respectively. Thus the critical properties of the model do not depend on the value of the spin, even when three spins are coupled.

Phase transitions in systems with multispin interactions

K. A. Penson, Rémi Jullien, Pierre M. Pfeuty

An Ising-type model including $n$-spin nearest-neighbor interactions is introduced. The ground-state properties of its Hamiltonian version are studied in one and two dimensions. The model is self-dual in one dimension. The mean-field theory indicates that for $n>{n}_{c}$ the transition may become first order. Finite-size scaling suggests that ${n}_{c}=4$ in one dimension. The critical exponents as functions of $n$ are estimated.

Random Quantum Ising Model with Three-Spin Couplings

Ferenc Iglói, Yu‐Cheng Lin

We apply a real-space block renormalization group approach to study the critical properties of the random transverse-field Ising spin chain with multispin interactions. First, we recover the known properties of the traditional model with two-spin interactions by applying the renormalization approach for the arbitrary size of the block. For the model with three-spin couplings, we calculate the critical point and demonstrate that the phase transition is controlled by an infinite disorder fixed point. We have determined the typical correlation-length critical exponent, which seems to be different from that of the random transverse Ising chain with nearest-neighbor couplings. Thus, this model represents a new infinite disorder universality class.

Series expansions for the zero-temperature transverse Ising model

L.G. Marland

Series expansions are presented for the magnetisation, susceptibility, magnetic field derivatives of the susceptibility and 'specific heat' of the zero-temperature transverse Ising model. Coefficients in these series have been calculated to tenth order in lambda 2 (where lambda is the transverse field) for the linear chain, to eighth order for the square lattice and to seventh order for the triangular lattice. These series yield estimates of the low-temperature critical exponents alpha ', beta ', gamma ' and Delta ' of the two- and three-dimensional Ising models. They provide good evidence for the symmetry of exponents above and below the critical point, e.g. gamma '= gamma .

Phase diagram of spin-1 quantum Ising models: Applications to systems of weakly coupled classical Ising chains

Yuval Gefen, Y. Imry, David Mukamel

The global phase diagram of the $S=1$ Ising model in a transverse field is studied using a mean-field approximation. The critical behavior has also been considered by real-space renormalization-group techniques. This model is used to analyze the phase diagram of weakly coupled ($\frac{{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}}{{J}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}}<<1$) classical Blume-Emery-Griffith chains. It is found that such systems display a first-order transition only in a very limited range of their parameters.

Strong-coupling expansions for multidimensional Ising and O(n) spin systems

Gerald E. Sobelman

Recent lattice Hamiltonian strong-coupling calculations for the (1+1)-dimensional Ising, O(2), O(3), and O(4) models are extended to $d+1$ dimensions and to general $\mathrm{O}(n)$ symmetry. This allows a nontrivial numerical check on the rate of convergence of the strong-coupling expansions as the multidimensional models all have standard second-order phase transitions which have been well studied by other methods. Dlog-Pad\'e analysis of the fourth-order mass gap series for the (2+1)-dimensional Ising model show the critical exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}$ to be calculated to about the 10% level of accuracy. The behavior of $\ensuremath{\nu}$ as a function of $d$ and $n$ is exhibited and compared against known results. Mean-field behavior is recovered exactly in the $d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ limit, while the Berlin-Kac spherical model is obtained in the $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ limit.
