Optical Free-Induction Decay Effect in a Λ-Type Quantum-Beat Three-Level System

Abstract

With Bloch form, a coherent transient effect–optical free-induction decay is studied semiclassically in the Λ-type three-level system driven by a coherent microwave field. The decay behavior has three contributions: a homogeneous part with transverse relaxation time and two inhomogeneous parts with different time constants that reflect the velocity bandwidth excited and the action of the driving microwave field.

Optical free induction decay in an almost degenerate V-Type Three-Level system

Zhuo‐Liang Cao

A optical free induction decay is studied semiclassically in the V-type three-level system with two upper levels being almost degenerate in Bloch form. It is discussed that the systematic relaxation has effect on the signal field of the free-induction decay. The decay behavior has three contributions: a homogeneous part with transverse relaxation time and two inhomogeneous parts with different time constants that reflect the velocity bandwidth excited.

Optical Nutation Effect in the Three-Level System Driven by a Coherent Microwave Field

Zhuo‐Liang Cao, Guo Guang-Can

In this paper, a coherent transient effect–optical nutation in Bloch form is studied semiclassically in the three-level atomic system driven by a coherent microwave field. The amplitude of the optical nutation signal field is obtained. It is found that the signal field, related to the microwave, is the overlap of two slow oscillations instead of one.

Optical free-induction-decay quantum beats in multilevel systems

A. I. Alekseev, O. V. Zhemerdeev

A theory of optical free-induction decay (FID) induced by two exciting light pulses in three-level atomic systems subjected to a constant magnetic field is presented. The theory takes into account the hyperfine interaction, the level degeneracy, and the dependence of the FID signal on the polarizations of the exciting pulses. An analysis of the FID signal in a magnetic field suggests new ways to measure the g factors of the levels, the hyperfine structure constants, and the relaxation rates. The results obtained are extended to include the echelon excitation of the multilevel system by a definite set of light pulses with specially chosen frequencies and polarizations.

Stochastic Theory of Coherent Optical Transients

Eiichi Hanamura

Photon echo and free induction decay, i.e., representative coherent optical transients, are described for two level system whose transition frequency is modulated by the Gaussian-Markoffian process. Photon echo signal is shown to decay biexponentially and to be effective in fixing the magnitude and the correlation time of the frequency modulation. Then we present the transition of the free induction decay rate against laser intensity from the Bloch type at the weak laser field into the Redfield one at the strong laser field.

Study of coherence effects in an inverted Y-type four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Yafang Shi, Lin Liu +6 more

Atomic coherence and interference play an important role in the study of the atom-photon interactions. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is an extensively studied two-photon coherence phenomenon theoretically as well as experimentally. EIT is mainly observed in three-level atomic systems which causes transparency by quenching absorption of the medium. In this paper, based on the lambda type three-level system including energy level |1>, |2> and |3>, a microwave driving field is introduced between the excited-state energy level |3> and another excited-state energy level |4> to form an inverted Y-type four-level system. We theoretically study the two- and three-photon coherence in this system. The results show that the coupling field makes the probing absorption intensity at the resonant frequency have a very narrow line-width depression, i.e., EIT. The microwave field causes a dynamic Stark splitting of the energy level |3> and induces the Aulter-Townes double peaks. Their frequency interval is exactly equal to the Rabi frequency of the microwave field. The presence of all three fields induces wide window of EIT at the line center owing to the enhanced depression results. The transient evolution is also discussed to understand the optical switching process in the system. Our theoretical study will be helpful to get a deeper insight into the three-photon effects in multilevel systems.

Effective two-level Maxwell-Bloch formalism and coherent pulse propagation in a driven three-level medium

Victor V. Kozlov, Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Marlan O. Scully

An effective two-level Maxwell-Bloch formalism is developed to describe various time-dependent phenomena in a three-level V-type system. The Maxwell-Bloch equations govern the temporal evolution of a probe field while a strong driving field is applied on the adjacent transition. The main assumption adopted throughout the paper is that the spontaneous decay rate on the coherently driven transition exceeds the decay rate on the probe transition as well as inverse time variations of both pulses. It is shown that the probe pulse interacts with such a medium in a manner similar to that in a self-induced transparency. An amplification without inversion of a relatively short probe pulse while propagating through an optically thick atomic medium is analyzed.
