Abstract

We propose an efficient scheme for optimizing the optical memory of a sequence of signal light pulses in a system of ultracold atoms in Λ configuration. The memory procedure consists of write-in, storage, and retrieval phases. By applying a weak microwave field in the storage stage, additional phase-dependent terms are included, and the contrast of the output signal pulses can be dynamically controlled (enhanced or suppressed) through manipulating the relative phase φ between optical and microwave fields. Our numerical analysis shows that the contrast is enhanced to the most extent when φ = 1.5π. In addition, the contrast is in proportion to the Rabi frequency of the microwave field with a certain relative phase.

Optimal light storage in atomic vapor

Nathaniel B. Phillips, Alexey Vyacheslavovich Gorshkov, Irina V. Novikova

We study procedures for the optimization of efficiency of light storage and retrieval based on the dynamic form of electromagnetically induced transparency in hot Rb vapor. We present a detailed analysis of two recently demonstrated optimization protocols: a time-reversal-based iteration procedure, which finds the optimal input signal pulse shape for any given control field, and a procedure based on the calculation of an optimal control field for any given signal pulse shape. We verify that the two procedures are mutually consistent and that they both independently achieve the maximum memory efficiency for any given optical depth. We observe good agreement with theoretical predictions for moderate optical depths $(<25)$, while at higher optical depths the experimental efficiency falls below the theoretically predicted values. We identify possible effects responsible for this reduction in memory efficiency.

Generating and manipulating beating signals by a microwave field in four-level cold atoms

Qian-Qian Bao, Liu Shuan Yang, Nuo Ba +2 more

We propose an efficient scheme for the dynamic generation and manipulation of beating signals in a sample of cold atoms driven into the four-level quasi-Λ configuration. This scheme relies on a procedure of light storage and retrieval controlled by a classical coupling field with a microwave field introduced only in the retrieval stage. One quantum probe field, incident upon this atomic sample, is transformed into a collective excitation of atomic spin coherence and then into two optical components characterized by different time-dependent phases. Consequently the retrieved quantum probe field exhibits a series of maxima and minima (beating signals) in intensity due to the alternative constructive and destructive interference. This interesting phenomenon, in fact, involves the coherent conversion between single-mode and two-mode dark-state polaritons and could be explored to measure the microwave intensity with high-precision beating signals.

Demonstration of a high-contrast optical switching in an atomic Delta system

Megha Ghosh, Asha Karigowda, Ayyappan Jayaraman +3 more

Abstract We present an experimental study of a Δ system in a room temperature, dilute sample of 85 Rb atoms. A Δ system in the D2 manifold of 85 Rb is formed by connecting the two lower hyperfine energy levels of a Λ system by a microwave drive field at 3.0357 GHz. We show that when the Rabi frequency of a microwave drive field exceeds that of the optical probe field, a three-wave mixing nonlinear interaction is established. This nonlinear interaction changes the enhanced transmission of the optical probe to a deep absorption for a relative phase difference of π between all the three fields. We establish through our experiment and our numerical simulation, the phase-sensitive and nonlinear nature of the Δ system’s response to the applied microwave and optical fields. Using this feature, we demonstrate a high-contrast microwave phase controlled switch for the optical probe field. In comparison with intensity and phase switching demonstrated with all-optical fields so far, our experiment opens up the possibility of obtaining the highest contrast optical switching with room temperature atoms.

Efficient light storage in a Λ system due to coupling between lower levels

A. Eilam, A. D. Wilson‐Gordon, Harry Friedmann

We show analytically and numerically that the application, during the storage time, of an additional weak field connecting the lower levels (LLs) of a Lambda system can modify the spin coherence and the amplitude of the retrieved probe without causing distortion. The LL coupling field adds an additional phase-dependent term to the probe propagation equation. The retrieved probe is amplified when the total relative phase Phi=0 or pi and decreased when Phi=pi/2.

Efficient images storage via modulating the atomic spin coherence in a N-type system

Tianhui Qiu, Hongyang Ma, L. X. Xia

A four-level N-type cold atomic system is proposed for optimizing images storage based on the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Both analytical analysis and numerical simulation clearly show that the application, during the storage time, of an additional intensity-modulated signal field and an additional microwave field can impose an intensity and a phase-dependent factors on the atomic spin coherence in a controlled manner, then the amplitude of the retrieved images can be increased or decreased with an enhancement in the visibility. Our results are very promising for the realization of all-optical information processing of images coherently stored in EIT media in the future.
