Statistics of polaritons in the nonlinear regime

Abstract

We discuss the quantum statistical properties of exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. The nonlinear dynamics is treated within a model of interacting bosons for the signal, pump, and idler modes. We focus on the regime of parametric amplification below threshold. We present the time evolution of the signal and idler modes towards their stationary solutions and discuss their statistical properties. In particular, we evaluate the amount of squeezing of the radiation emitted out of the microcavity in a configuration, which may be relevant for experiments.

Self-trapping phenomenon in exciton-polariton dynamics

Olga F. Vasilieva, P. I. Khadzhi

The polariton dynamics in a microcavity in the parametric oscillator mode, when two pump polaritons are transformed into signal and idler polaritons and vice versa, has been studied. A nonlinear differential equation is obtained, which describes the temporal evolution of pump-polariton density, the solution of which is expressed in terms of the Jacobi elliptical functions. The amplitude and period of polaritondensity oscillations are determined by the initial polariton densities and the resonance detuning. The possibility of self-trapping in exciton-polariton dynamics is predicted.

Twin polaritons in semiconductor microcavities

Jean‐Philippe Karr, A. Baas, E. Giacobino

The quantum correlations between the beams generated by polariton pair scattering in a semiconductor microcavity above the parametric oscillation threshold are computed analytically. The influence of various parameters, including the cavity-exciton detuning, the intensity mismatch between the signal and idler beams, and the amount of spurious noise, is analyzed. We show that very strong quantum correlations between the signal and idler polaritons can be achieved. However, the quantum effects in the outgoing light fields are strongly reduced due to the large mismatch in the coupling of the signal and idler polaritons to the external photons.

Nonlinear dynamics of an optical parametric exciton–polariton oscillator in a microcavity

Vasilieva, O.F., Васильева, О., Hadji, P.I. +1 more

The system of nonlinear evolution equations was obtained for describing the time evolution of densities of pump, signal, and idler microcavity polaritons. It was shown that the period and amplitude of oscillations of the polariton densities essentially depend on the initial densities of polaritons, initial phase difference, and resonance detuning. For the definite relation between the parameters, the aperiodic evolution of the system is also possible; it represents the conversion of only the part of pump polaritons, by which the evolution of the system is finished. The significant dependence of the period and amplitude of polariton oscillations on the initial phase difference evidences the possibility of the phase controlling of the polariton dynamics. The damping of the system of coherent polaritons leads to the oscillatory decay of polariton density in time, the rate of which is defined by the polariton damping constants.

Parametric oscillation in semiconductor microcavities: nonlinear and quantum effects

Jean‐Philippe Karr, A. Baas, Marco Romanelli +2 more

Abstract We report the observation of optical bistability in a semiconductor microcavity pumped at the “magic angle” above the parametric oscillation threshold. Experimental evidence is given in the form of a hysteresis cycle of the nonlinear emission as a function of the pump intensity. A model analogous to those developped for triply resonant Optical Parametric Oscillators (OPO) is in good agreement with the experimental findings. In the second part, we study the potential application of the parametric oscillation regime to quantum optics. The quantum correlations between the emitted “signal” and “idler” beams are computed. We show that very strong quantum correlations between the signal and idler polaritons can be achieved. However the quantum effects in the outgoing light fields are strongly reduced due to the large mismatch in the coupling of the signal and idler polaritons to the external photons. Photon statistics of semiconductor microcavity polaritons

Timur A. Khudaiberganov, Igor Yu. Chestnov, Sevak Demirchyan

Quantum statistical properties of the coherently driven semiconductor microcavity are studied. The unique quantum solution for the two-mode system of coupled excitons and photons was obtained in the adiabatic approximation. This solution predicts both bunching and antibunching regimes for the photonic field in the domain of parameters where the single mode polariton approximation fails.
