Quantum optical correlation through metamaterials

Abstract

Based on the quantization scheme of the radiation fields in the dispersive and absorptive magnetic media, the normally ordered correlation functions of the outgoing field through a metamaterial plate are obtained. Then the relative photon-number densities of the transmitted field, the reflected field and the absorbed field are gotten through the correlation functions. Furthermore, the contributions of the relative permittivity and permeability of the metamaterials to the transmission are analyzed. Our results show that the permittivity and permeability reinforce the transmission for frequencies that are big compared with the magnetic resonance frequency.

Quantum optical input--output relations for dispersive and lossy multi-slab dielectric plates

Toralf Gruner, D.‐G. Welsch

Using the Green function approach to the problem of quantization of the phenomenological Maxwell theory, the propagation of quantized radiation through dispersive and absorptive multilayer dielectric plates is studied. Input--output relations are derived, with special emphasis on the determination of the quantum noise generators associated with the absorption of radiation inside the dielectric matter. The input--output relations are used to express arbitrary correlation functions of the outgoing field in terms of correlation functions of the incoming field and those of the noise generators. To illustrate the theory, the effect of a single-slab plate on the mean photon-number densities in the frequency domain is discussed in more detail.

QED in dispersing and absorbing media

L. Knöll, Stefan Scheel, D.‐G. Welsch

After giving an outline of the quantization scheme based on the microscopic Hopfield model of a dielectric bulk material, we show how the classical phenomenological Maxwell equations of the electromagnetic field in the presence of dielectric matter of given space- and frequency-dependent complex permittivity can be transferred to quantum theory. Including in the theory the interaction of the medium-assisted field with atomic systems, we present both the minimal-coupling Hamiltonian and the multipolar-coupling Hamiltonian in the Coulomb gauge. To illustrate the concept, we discuss the input--output relations of radiation and the transformation of radiation-field quantum states at absorbing four-port devices, and the spontaneous decay of an excited atom near the surface of an absorbing body and in a spherical micro-cavity with intrinsic material losses. Finally, we give an extension of the quantization scheme to other media such as amplifying media, magnetic media, and nonlinear media.

Low-Loss Metamaterials Based on Classical Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Philippe Tassin, Lei Zhang, Thomas Koschny +2 more

We demonstrate theoretically that electromagnetically induced transparency can be achieved in metamaterials, in which electromagnetic radiation is interacting resonantly with mesoscopic oscillators rather than with atoms. We describe novel metamaterial designs that can support a full dark resonant state upon interaction with an electromagnetic beam and we present results of its frequency-dependent effective permeability and permittivity. These results, showing a transparency window with extremely low absorption and strong dispersion, are confirmed by accurate simulations of the electromagnetic field propagation in the metamaterial.

Propagation of quantized fields through negative-index media

Martin Ligare

Dielectric materials in which both the relative permittivity, ε, and the relative permeability, μ, are negative exhibit striking optical properties, which are a consequence of the fact that the effective index of refraction in such materials is negative. Most studies of the propagation of electromagnetic fields in these media have concentrated on classical fields with well-defined phases. In contrast, I use simple fully-quantized models to illustrate how some of the striking properties of negative-index media are manifested in the propagation of single, spontaneously emitted, photons. Single-photon quantum fields do not have an absolute phase, but the examples in this paper demonstrate a quantum analog of the negative phase accumulated by classical fields as photons propagate through negative-index media. The single photons also exhibit classical reflection and transmission coefficients, as well as the expected group velocity.

Propagation of nonclassical light through three-dimensional dispersing and absorbing multilayer dielectric plate

M. Khanbekyan, L. Knöll, D.‐G. Welsch

Propagation of nonclassical light through a dispersing and absorbing multilayer dielectric plate is studied using the theory of quantization of the electromagnetic field in causal dielectric media. 3D input-output relations is derived, describing the medium by a stepwise constant, complex permittivity that satisfies the Kramers-Kronig relations and allowing for arbitrary additional atomic sources.
