Parametrizing Density Matrices for Composite Quantum Systems

Abstract

A parametrization of density operators for bipartite quantum systems is proposed. It is based on the particular parametrization of the unitary group found recently by Jarlskog. It is expected that this parametrization will find interesting applications in the study of quantum properties of multipartite systems.

Parametrizations of density matrices

E. Brüning, H. Mäkelä, A. Messina +1 more

This article gives a brief overview of some recent progress in the characterization and parametrization of density matrices of finite dimensional systems. We discuss in some detail the Bloch-vector and Jarlskog parametrizations and mention briefly the coset parametrization. As applications of the Bloch parametrization we discuss the trace invariants for the case of time dependent Hamiltonians and in some detail the dynamics of three-level systems. Furthermore, the Bloch vector of two-qubit systems as well as the use of the polarization operator basis is indicated. As the main application of the Jarlskog parametrization we construct density matrices for composite systems. In addition, some recent related articles are mentioned without further discussion.

A parametrization of bipartite systems based onSU(4) Euler angles

Todd Tilma, Mark Byrd, E C G Sudarshan

In this paper we give an explicit parametrization for all two-qubit density matrices. This is important for calculations involving entanglement and many other types of quantum information processing. To accomplish this we present a generalized Euler angle parametrization for SU (4) and all possible two-qubit density matrices. The important group-theoretical properties of such a description are then manifest. We thus obtain the correct Haar (Hurwitz) measure and volume element for SU (4) which follows from this parametrization. In addition, we study the role of this parametrization in the Peres–Horodecki criteria for separability and its corresponding usefulness in calculating entangled two-qubit states as represented through the parametrization.

Comment on "A Recursive Parametrisation of Unitary Matrices"

Kazuyuki Fujii

In this note we make a comment on the paper by Jarlskog (math-ph/0504049) in which she gave a parametrisation to unitary matrices. Namely, we show that her recursive method is essentially obtained by the canonical coordinate of the second kind in the Lie group theory, and propose a problem on constructing unitary gates in quantum computation by making use of the parametrisation.

A composite parameterization of unitary groups, density matrices and subspaces

Christoph Spengler, Marcus Huber, Beatrix C. Hiesmayr

Unitary transformations and density matrices are central objects in quantum physics and various tasks require to introduce them in a parameterized form. In this paper we present a parameterization of the unitary group of arbitrary dimension d which is constructed in a composite way. We show explicitly how any element of can be composed of matrix exponential functions of generalized anti-symmetric σ-matrices and one-dimensional projectors. The specific form makes it considerably easy to identify and discard redundant parameters in several cases. In this way, redundancy-free density matrices of arbitrary rank k can be formulated. Our construction can also be used to derive an orthonormal basis of any k -dimensional subspaces of with the minimal number of parameters. As an example it is shown that this feature leads to a significant reduction of parameters in the case of investigating distillability of quantum states via lower bounds of an entanglement measure (the m -concurrence).

JARLSKOG'S PARAMETRIZATION OF UNITARY MATRICES AND QUDIT THEORY

Kazuyuki Fujii, KUNIO FUNAHASHI, TAKAYUKI KOBAYASHI

In the paper (math–ph/0504049) Jarlskog gave an interesting simple parametrization to unitary matrices, which was essentially the canonical coordinate of the second kind in the Lie group theory (math–ph/0505047). In this paper we apply the method to a quantum computation based on multilevel system (qudit theory). Namely, by considering that the parametrization gives a complete set of modules in qudit theory, we construct the generalized Pauli matrices, which play a central role in the theory and also make a comment on the exchange gate of two–qudit systems. Moreover, we give an explicit construction to the generalized Walsh–Hadamard matrix in the case of n = 3, 4, and 5. For the case of n = 5, its calculation is relatively complicated. In general, a calculation to construct it tends to become more and more complicated as n becomes large. To perform a quantum computation the generalized Walsh–Hadamard matrix must be constructed in a quick and clean manner. From our construction it may be possible to say that a qudit theory with n ≥ 5 is not realistic. This paper is an introduction toward Quantum Engineering.
