Effects of Dipole Interaction on the Collapse-revival Phenomenon of Rabi Oscillations

Abstract

The sensitivity of the collapse-revival phenomenon of Rabi oscillations of two identical atoms to dipole-dipole interaction is brought out by deriving the analytical expression of the excitation probability of two interacting atoms in a coherent field. We study this effect in a two-photon model in which the time evolution is exactly periodic.

Effect of dipole interaction and phase-interrupting collisions on the collapse-and-revival phenomenon in the Jaynes-Cummings model

Amitabh Joshi, Ravinder Rupchand Puri, S. V. Lawande

A study of multiatom effects, i.e., dipole-dipole interactions and phase-interrupting collisions between atoms in the Jaynes-Cummings model, is presented here. For this purpose we consider two identical two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode field in a lossless cavity and study the effect of the dipole-dipole interaction between these two atoms on the collapse-and-revival phenomenon of Rabi oscillations by calculating the analytical expression of the excitation probability in the coherent field. We also consider another situation in which a single atom interacting with a single-mode field in a damped cavity undergoes phase-interrupting collisions. The effect of phase-interrupting collisions along with the usual cavity damping on the collapse-and-revival phenomenon has been explicitly calculated using the dressed-atom approach under the secular approximation.

The Time-evolution of the Atomic Population in the System of Atoms in Bell States Interacting with Two-mode Entangled Coherent Field

Zhuo‐Liang Cao

The time-evolution of atomic population of a light-atoms interaction system, two atoms in Bell states Interacting with two-mode entangled coherent field, are investigated by means of quantum thoery and numerical method. The effect of the atomic initial state, mean photon numbers of field, the degree of the entanglment for the entangled coherent fields, and the coupling strength of dipole-dipole interaction between atoms on the atom's population are discussed by numerical calculation. The results show that the atomic population is time-independent provided that the atom is in |β11〉 state. For the other three Bell states, there will appear the periodical collapse-revival of the atomic population if the initial mean photon number reaches some special value. With the increase of the initial mean photon number, the oscillation frequency of the time-evolution of atomic population increases correspondingly, and the amplitude decreases. The revival period of the atomic population for the initial states |β00〉 and |β10〉 is twice of that for the initial state |β01〉.The degree of entanglement of the two-mode entangled coherent field and the intensity of two dipole-dipole interaction between atoms have no effects on the frequency of the Rabi oscillation, but have obvious effects on the amplitude of the oscillation.

Characteristics of Rabi oscillations in the two-mode squeezed state of the field

Amitabh Joshi, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

The phenomenon of collapses and revivals of Rabi oscillations is studied for a two-level atom undergoing either one- or two-photon transitions in the two-mode squeezed state field inside a lossless cavity. The qualitative behavior of this phenomenon is found to be different as compared with corresponding coherent-state fields. Analytic expressions for excitation probabilities are obtained. Also, the statistical aspect of the field in terms of intensity-intensity correlations is discussed.

Quantum-phase dynamics of dimer systems interacting with a two-mode squeezed coherent field

Masayoshi Nakano, Kizashi Yamaguchi

It is well-known that the interaction among atoms/molecules and quantized electromagnetic fields with a small number of photons provides a peculiar quantum nature, i.e., collapses and revivals in the Rabi oscillations. In this study, we investigate the intermolecular interaction (dipole–dipole interaction) effect on the collapse-revival behavior using several dimer models (composed of two kinds of two-state monomers with slightly different excitation energies) with different intermolecular distances in the presence of a two-mode squeezed coherent field, in which each mode is initially correlated. It is found that although the collapse-revival behavior is fairly overlapped and indistinct in the case of a noninteracting dimer under the present two-mode squeezed coherent field, the decrease in the intermolecular distance (the increase in the intermolecular interaction) resurrects relatively distinct collapse-revival behavior with longer collapse and revival times. By analyzing the quantum behavior from the viewpoint of the dynamics of two-mode Pegg–Barnett photon-phase distributions and off-diagonal dimer density matrices, this feature is found to closely relate to a significant change in the degree of contribution between one- and two-photon processes caused by the variation in the intermolecular interaction.

Decoupling light and matter: permanent dipole moment induced collapse of Rabi oscillations

Denis G. Baranov, Mihail I. Petrov, Krasnok, Alexander E.

Rabi oscillations is a key phenomenon among the variety of quantum optical effects that manifests itself in the periodic oscillations of a two-level system between the ground and excited states when interacting with electromagnetic field. Commonly, the rate of these oscillations scales proportionally with the magnitude of the electric field probed by the two-level system. Here, we investigate the interaction of light with a two-level quantum emitter possessing permanent dipole moments. The semi-classical approach to this problem predicts slowing down and even full suppression of Rabi oscillations due to asymmetry in diagonal components of the dipole moment operator of the two-level system. We consider behavior of the system in the fully quantized picture and establish the analytical condition of Rabi oscillations collapse. These results for the first time emphasize the behavior of two-level systems with permanent dipole moments in the few photon regime, and suggest observation of novel quantum optical effects.

Features of collapses and revivals in a two-photon Jaynes–Cummings model with a squeezed field

Lin-sheng He

With the help of a two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model, which is an exactly solvable model, we have dealt analytically with the dynamical behavior of the atom and the field for a two-photon process in squeezed and coherent fields under the appropriate approximation. The features of collapses and revivals of Rabi oscillations for the atom and the field in a two-photon process represent strict periodicity. The phase jump and the large and negative frequency for the combination Rabi oscillation are exhibited in the case of a squeezed field. The results show that squeezing in a field strikingly affects the evolution behavior of the atom and the field.
