Abstract

The experimental results on multicharged ion formation at nonlinear atom ionization are analyzed. A presence of data referring to a collective character of interaction of the atomic electrons with radiation field is clarified.

New effects in the multiphoton ionization of atoms

Nikolai B. Delone, Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

The review is devoted to new effects discovered recently in the course of studying the process of nonlinear ionization of atoms in the field of laser radiation—above-threshold ionization, manifestation of multielectron structure of complex atoms, formation of multiply charged ions, tunneling ionization, and emission of short-wavelength radiation. The main experimental data and their theoretical interpretation are presented. A discussion is given of the criteria for the applicability of the lowest non-vanishing order of non-steady-state perturbation theory to the description of the interaction of an atom with the electromagnetic field.

Multiphoton Ionization of Atoms

C. K. Rhodes

Studies of multiphoton ionization of atoms have revealed several unexpected characteristics. The confluence of the experimental evidence leads to the hypothesis that the basic character of the atomic response involves highly organized, coherent motions of entire atomic shells. The important regime, for which the radiative field strength is greater than an atomic unit (e/a(2)(0)), can be viewed in approximate correspondence with the physics of fast (approximately 10 MeV per atomic mass unit) atom-atom scattering. This physical picture provides a basis for the expectation that stimulated emission in the x-ray range can be produced by direct, highly nonlinear coupling of ultraviolet radiation to atoms.

Multiphoton ionization of atoms in the presence of multiple resonances

Svetlana Kotochigova

A model of multiple resonances between groups of discrete and autoionizing levels is proposed for the description of the process of multiphoton ionization. The phenomena of the extremely rapid broadening and growth of amplitudes of the multiphoton resonances, observed experimentally in the yield of Sr+ and Ba+ ions [ J. Phys. B.14, 2253– 2359 ( 1981);Elementary Processes in Laser Radiation Field ( 1988), pp. 122– 153)] are explained on the basis of this model. The strong-coupling method was used in numerical calculations for Sr and Ba atoms in a strong laser field.

Multiphoton ionization of atoms

Nikolai B. Delone

The most important results of study of multiphoton ionization of atoms are reviewed. Discussions are presented of specific features of the process, theoretical methods of description of ionization of atoms in a strong light field, the basic principles of design of experiments in which intense laser radiation is used, results of investigation of direct and resonance processes of multiphoton ionization, and the mutual relation between multiphoton processes (multiphoton excitation and ionization) and various phenomena leading to perturbation of the spectrum of bound states of an electron in an atom under the influence of a strong light field.

Resonant structure in doubly charged ion formation during multiphoton ionization of Sr and Ba atoms by infrared laser radiation

І. І. Бондар, В. В. Суран, M. I. Dudich

Experimental investigations of resonant structure in doubly charged ion (A 2+ ) formation were carried out during Sr and Ba atom ionization by infrared laser radiation (ω = 8400-9100 cm -1 ). It has been shown that in this case the mechanism of ion formation is a two-electron process - the ions are produced immediately from the neutral atoms. It has been found for the first time that the resonant structure in A 2+ ion formation in such conditions is due to the excitation and ionization of neutral-atom mixed states. The atomic-state mixing in this case results from the Stark effect provided that the polarizability of these states is very high.
