Crossover relationship between the magnetic susceptibility and the correlation length

Abstract

In the asymptotic critical region of a ferromagnetic spin system, the magnetic susceptibility χ and the correlation length ξ are related by the power law: χ∼ξ2−η, where η is the correlation function exponent. Somewhat farther from the critical point, but still within the critical region, we expect the behavior to be mean-field in character: χ∼ξ2. We give an exact relationship between χ and ξ in terms of a differential renormalization group approach. The leading behavior in the disordered phase is explicitly calculated for the n-component Wilson-Fisher model to O(ε2), ε≡4−d. The result includes both limiting power laws in a smooth crossover function. For the Ising case, n=1, the relationship is extended to the entire critical region, including the ordered phase. In this case, even in the asymptotic limit, the susceptibility differs from ξ2−η by a factor which depends on the magnetization M. This function is calculated to leading order and correctly gives the associated amplitude ratios to O(ε). Applications to the general p-point vertex function are discussed.

Two-point correlation function near the coexistence surface

Jeffrey F. Nicoll

Differential renormalization-group equations for the one-particle-irreducible vertex functions are solved analytically to provide information about the scaling properties of the correlation function at small and moderate wave vectors everywhere in the critical region. For Ising-like spin systems, this extends previous work on the anomalous dimension crossover function to nonzero magnetization. The susceptibility-correlation-length relative-amplitude ratio is correctly given to $O(\ensuremath{\epsilon})$, $\ensuremath{\epsilon}=4\ensuremath{-}d$; moreover, a fully nonlinear crossover-amplitude function is obtained. For general $n$-component spins, the longitudinal part of the correlation function, ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{2,L}$ is calculated to $O(\ensuremath{\epsilon})$ in crossover form for small and moderate $k$. The asymptotic singularity ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{2,L}\ensuremath{\sim}{k}^{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}$ is automatically incorporated. The result is exact in the spherical limit $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$.

Renormalization-group calculation of the relationship of the susceptibility and correlation length: The anomalous-dimension crossover function

Jeffrey F. Nicoll, T. S. Chang

We give an exact relationship between the susceptibility and correlation length (which includes the crossover to classical behavior) in a differential renormalization-group approach. We calculate the relationship explicitly for arbitrary-order-$\ensuremath{\theta}$ Lifshitz systems to leading order. Global scaling properties of the $p$-point Green's functions are given in the differential framework.

Scaling laws and correlation functions near magnetic critical points

Robert Hecht

"Critical point phenomena in magnetic systems are studied with the aid of the scaling laws. These laws relate the critical indices which describe the behavior of thermodynamic and correlation functions near T. Kadanoff's derivation of the scaling 1aw is reviewed. An experimental survey of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic data near T is presented. Susceptibility, correlation length, magnectization, specific heat and a magnetic equation of state are discussed. It is found that the ""critical region"" can extend as far as [equation] although frequently it is restricted to E < 10-2 The critical indices S, y, v, ~ and ~, are close to the three dimensional ISing model values. Values for 0, y' and ~ are not known as conclusively. Specific heat behavior is discussed in terms -~ of a three-parameter fit, namely C = aE + b. Varying b allows one to estimate a possible range of a's. The experimental information is consistent with the scaling law relations 2 - alpha = 2 - alpha' = dV = d gamma / (2-pi) = gamma + 2B = B(d+1) The scaling law theory is extended to predict the temperature, field and spatial dependence of various spin correlation functions. These predictions are checked by analytic calculations for the two dimensional Ising model in zero field. Results are presented for the energy density-energy density and energy density-spin correlation functions in the limit E « 1, R » 1, but the product ER arbitrary. Results are also presented for a group of two, three and four spin correlations at cT. In each case the scaling law predictions are verified."

Crossover theory for disordered ferromagnets

Hans-O Heuer, D. Wagner

We show that the critical behavior of disordered ferromagnets can be understood in terms of an effective, translational invariant Hamiltonian with renormalized coupling parameters which exhibit a tricritical as well as a critical point. The stable critical fixed point describes the critical behavior of weakly disordered systems, whereas the tricritical fixed point is responsible for the critical behavior of strongly disordered systems at least in the experimentally accessible range of temperature. This necessitates a crossover theory to describe the crossover between these two fixed points and to calculate critical properties as a function of concentration and temperature. In this paper we study the symmetric phase. Susceptibility and specific heat are calculated in scaling form using nonlinear scaling fields to verify that disordered ferromagnets exhibit universal critical behavior. The corresponding effective exponents exhibit nonmonotonous concentration- and temperature-dependent behavior. According to our theory, Fisher-renormalized tricritical behavior dominates in the experimentally accessible temperature range which leads to extreme values of the effective exponents ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{eff}}$=2 and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{eff}}$=-1 in the limit of strong dilution. However, in accord with the Harris criterion we verify that the asymptotic behavior (T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${T}_{c}$) is not changed by dilution if the critical exponent of the specific heat of the pure system ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{pure}<0}$, independent of the value of the concentration.

Crossover functions by renormalization-group matching: Three-loop results

Jeffrey F. Nicoll, P. C. Albright

Crossover functions are obtained to three-loop order in an expansion around dimension d=4 for the ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4}$ theory. Expressions for the internal energy, susceptibility, and correlation length are given for the general n-component system in zero magnetic field and above the critical temperature. The full Helmholtz free energy, magnetization equation of state, and susceptibility are given for the Ising-like n=1 case. Corrected values for the critical amplitude ratios as well as for the correction-to-scaling amplitude ratios are given to three-loop order.

A Theory of the Second Order Phase Transitions in Spin Systems. III

Masuo Suzuki

Expressions for general correlation functions in Ising ferromagnets are derived in terms of the Lee-Yang theorem. By the use of these expressions, the asymptotic forms of correlation functions in the presence of magnetic field are analyzed, assuming those in the absence of the external field. In particular, the critical indices of spin-spin, energy-density-energy-density, energy-density-spin correlation functions are related with the critical indices of thermal susceptiblity χT0, specific heat, susceptibility χH0, and magnetization. These results agree in form with those predicted by the scaling law approach.
