Abstract

Several scaled models have been used to determine the contributions of various waveguide mount parameters to the embedding impedance of a mm-wave superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer. Measured effects of waveguide height, substrate orientation and width, junction location, lead inductance and RF-filter impedance are presented and discussed.

The IF Output Impedance of SIS Mixers

Patrice Serres, A. Navarrini, Yves Bortolotti +1 more

In this paper, we describe a measurement setup to characterize the intermediate frequency (IF) impedance of cryogenically cooled superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers. A setup based on a commercial vector network analyzer (VNA), a circulator and a low noise amplifier (LNA) has allowed to increase the dynamic of the VNA and to perform accurate one-port measurements across a high dynamic range of the SIS mixers IF band. The mixers were biased in three different regions of their unpumped IV curve to obtain three known impedances which are close to the classical calibration SOLT standards (Short, Open, Load, Thru): the reference plane was located at the SIS junction itself and the calibration procedure allowed to calibrate out all IF circuitry of the measurement setup, including the on-chip SIS mixer intrinsic capacitance and inductance without requiring to thermally cycle and open the cryostat to locate and measure the different calibration standards. Thus, the devised method provides a simple and direct measurement of the SIS mixers IF impedance which can be used for quick, accurate and highly repeatable IF characterization of any type of millimeter and sub-millimeter wave SIS mixers. The measurement method is described and the experimental results of the IF output impedances of 3 mm band DSB and SSB mixers with 4 GHz wide IFs (across 4-8 GHz) are presented and compared with simulated predictions obtained from combining Tucker's SIS mixer theory and accurate electromagnetic modeling of the mixer structure.

Development of an SIS(Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor) Junction Mixer over 120∼180 GHz Band

Moon‐Hee Chung, Changhoon Lee, Kwang-Dong Kim +1 more

A fixed-tuned SIS(Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor) mixer across 120∼180 GHz band has been developed. This mixer employs an SIS chip fabricated by Nobeyama radio observatory which consists of a series array of 6 Nb/Al-AlO/Nb junctions in a microstrip line on a fused quartz substrate. The SIS chip is placed at the center of the half-height waveguide mixer mount to have a good incoming signal coupling over the whole frequency band. No mechanical tuner was used in the SIS mixer and the RF signal and local oscillator power are injected to the mixer via a cooled cross-guide coupler. In order to prevent the IF signal loss, the If output impedance of the SIS mixer was matched to the 50 input impedance of the IF chain. Measured double sideband noise temperatures of a receiver using the SIS mixer are 32∼131 K over 120∼180 GHz band. The developed SIS mixer is now in use for radio astronomical observations on the TRAO 14 m radio telescope.

Waveguide-Type SIS Receiver Using All-NbN Technique

M. TAKEDA

This paper describes the first experimental results for a waveguide-type all-NbN superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) heterodyne mixer on an MgO substrate designed to operate over the gap frequency of Nb. The mixer consists of an NbN/MgO/NbN junction, which has a length of one wavelength at 880GHz as a tuning circuit, an NbN/MgO/NbN microstrip as a λ/4 impedance transformer, and an RF choke filter. The mixer chip was designed using a high-frequency-structure simulator. Its return-loss and embedding-impedance characteristics were examined using a 180-times-scaled mixer model. By optimizing the cutting and polishing processes for the MgO substrate, we were able to fabricate the mixer chip with an accuracy of less than 5 μm. We succeeded in mounting the chip on a mixer block and in estimating the receiver noise temperature. The uncorrected minimum double-sideband receiver noise temperature was 740 K at 824 GHz. A comparison of the receiver noise temperature in a quasi-optical SIS mixer fabricated on the same wafer as the waveguide mixer showed that input noise was the major contributor to receiver noise in the waveguide mixer.

Design of a w-band SIS mixer

D. Winker

The mixer mount for a 75 -110 GHz SIS (superconductor-insulator-superconductor) receiver was scale modeled at 2 - 8 GHz . The mixer mount had a 4-step Chebychev single ridge transformer to launch the rf signal from the waveguide to a microstripline circuit. The microstripline circuit coupled the rf signal into the on-chip SIS element. A wire inductor in parallel with the mixer was used to tune out the capacitance of the SIS junction. Both the junction and the inductor had rf grounds provided by 90° radial stubs. In the scale model, a 50 Ω chip resistor in parallel with a 1 pF chip capacitor was used in place of the SIS junction to measure the rf matching properties. The inductor was modeled with a thin copper wire. The VSWR of the entire mount was less than 2.1 : 1 over the frequency band corresponding to 75 - 107 GHz. Receiver measurements with the actual mixer mount employing trilayer SIS tunnel junctions gave similar trends across the band.

A novel conception of improved matching for both input and output mixer ports has been developed and confirmed successfully with experimental receivers in the 40-180-GHz frequency range. Parallel and parallel-series combinations integrated up to 11 Nb-AlO/sub x/-Nb type superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junctions have been tested in full-height waveguide mixers. Study on SIS Mixers for "ALMA" Band-10

S. V. Shitov, Oleg V. Koryukin, Andrey V. Uvarov +7 more

This paper studies superconductor insulator superconductor (SIS) mixers for ALMA Band-10 project. The possible scheme of the ALMA Band-10 cartridge with balanced lens-antenna mixers is presented. The new balanced full-height waveguide SIS mixer comprises two equal mixer chips fabricated on quartz substrates. Each chip contains an RF circuit with hybrid twin-SIS junction NbTiN/Nb-AlOx-Nb/Al. The preliminary experimental study of Band-10 receiver with a double-slot antenna SIS mixer mounted with a 10-mm immersion silicon lens is done to define an optimum layout of the tuning circuit and a combination of materials leading to the best performance of the SIS mixer.
