Abstract

A theoretical study of the propagation of steady-state video pulses in a double-beam-refractive one-axis crystal, consisting of non-resonant sigma -transitions, without using the slowly varying envelope and rotating wave approximations has been performed. On the basis of appropriate exact solutions a possibility of non-linear bound steady-state pulse of the ordinary and extraordinary waves is analysed.

Propagation of short pulses of polarized radiation in a resonant medium

Andrei I. Maimistov

The propagation of electromagnetic radiation pulses in a medium emulated by the two-level atoms is considered. Ground state is not degenerated, excited state is characterized by the angular moment j equals 1. The exact steady state solutions of the Maxwell - Bloch equations without slowly varying envelope and phases approximation were found, that are generalization of a known solutions by Bullough and Ahmad for the scalar case.

Pulse propagation in photonic crystals and nonlinear media

Victor Kimberg

The present thesis is devoted to theoretical studies of light pulse propagation through different linear and nonlinear media. One dimensional holographic photonic crystals and one dimensional impurity band based photonic crystals are investigated as linear media. The effects of angular dependence of the band structures and pulse delay with respect to the light polarization are analyzed. A strict theory of nonlinear propagation of a few strong interacting light beams is presented and applied in the field of nonlinear optics. The key idea of this approach is a self-consistent solution of the nonlinear wave equation and the density matrix equations of the material beyond the so-called rotating wave approximation. The results of numerical studies led to a successful interpretation of recent experimental data [Nature, 415:767, 2002]. A theoretical study of the NO molecule by means of two-color infrared -- X-ray pump probe spectroscopy is presented. It was found that the phase of the infrared field strongly influences the trajectory of the nuclear wave packet, and hence, the X-ray spectrum. The dependence of the X-ray spectra on the delay time, the duration and the shape of the pulses are studied.

Solutions for Maxwell-Bloch equations without using the approximation of a slowly varying envelope: circularly-polarized video pulses

С. В. Сазонов, E. V. Trifonov

Propagation of strong circularly-polarized 'video' pulses in a two-level non-resonant medium without using the approximations of slowly varying envelope and rotating wave has been studied. New solutions to the Maxwell-Bloch equations called 'bisolitons' are obtained. Bisolitons are running localized 'video' pulses of the electric field vector rotating in transverse plane.

Extremely short electromagnetic pulses in a resonant medium with a permanent dipole moment

Andrei I. Maimistov, Jean-Guy Caputo

The propagation of an extremely short (one cycle long) pulse of an electromagnetic field in a medium whose resonant transition is characterized by both diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of the dipole-moment operator is considered theoretically. The set of Maxwell-Bloch equations without the approximation of the slowly varying envelopes is used. Two types of solutions of this set, which are found describing the steady-state propagation of an electromagnetic pulse in such a medium.

Soliton regimes of ultrashort pulse propagation through an array of asymmetric quantum objects

С. В. Сазонов, N. V. Ustinov

Nonlinear regimes of two-component ultrashort pulse propagation through an array of anisotropic quantum systems are analyzed theoretically under conditions when the slowly varying envelope approximation is inapplicable. It is shown that if the spectral width of the pulse is much larger than the quantum transition frequency, then the dynamics of its ordinary component can be described by a modified sine-Gordon equation that belongs to the class of integrable models but has never been used in physical applications. It is shown that the extraordinary pulse component responsible for the dynamic Stark shift of the transition frequency is coupled to its ordinary component by an algebraic relation. The soliton solutions to the derived equation are classified. Depending on the pulse duration, the solutions have the form of 2π pulses (kinks and antikinks) or steady traveling 0π pulses having no counterparts in isotropic models (neutral kinks). Interactions between the medium and solitons of different types and soliton collisions are analyzed.

Coherent propagation of two-photon quasi-resonant pulses in a medium of multi-level atoms

Farhad H. M. Faisal

Coherent propagation of a circularly polarized pulse which is two-photon quasi-resonant with a medium of multi-level atoms is considered in the adiabatic following limit. The relevant pair of non-linear coupled partial differential equations are solved exactly for arbitrary pulse shapes. The development of the envelope and the phase of the pulse as it propagates through the medium is described analytically. Perturbation theoretical results are shown to apply only for small intensity or small distance of propagation or both. Qualitatively different results apply for higher intensities and longer distances of propagation. These include strong self-phase-modulation effects as well as reshaping of the pulse envelope.
