Ultra-slow soliton pairs in four-level inverted Y-system via electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

Using the Schrödinger Maxwell equations, we theoretically investigate the propagation properties of probe and mixing fields in a lifetime-broadened inverted-Y type cold atomic medium. This system is driven by two strong control (pumping and coupling) fields. The results reveal that the probe (or mixing) field consists of two modes with different group velocity and absorption. Under slowly varying envelope approximation, we discuss the propagation equation of the probe (or mixing) field, which includes the high-order nonlinear term. The solutions show that optical solitons pairs can be generated in the cold atom medium with ultra-slow group velocities.

Formation and propagation of coupled ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a cold three-state double- Λ system

Guoxiang Huang, Kaijun Jiang, M. G. Payne +1 more

We investigate the simultaneous formation and propagation of coupled ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a cold, lifetime-broadened three-state double-Lambda atomic system. Starting from the equations of motion of atomic response and two-mode probe-control electromagnetic fields, we derive coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations that govern the nonlinear evolution of the envelopes of the probe fields in this four-wave mixing scheme by means of the standard method of multiple scales. We demonstrate that for weak probe fields and with suitable operation conditions, a pair of coupled optical solitons moving with remarkably slow propagating velocity can be established in such a highly resonant atomic medium. The key elements to such a shape preserving, well matched yet interacting soliton pair is the balance between dispersion effect and self- and cross-phase modulation effects of the system.

Nonlinear Faraday rotation in electromagnetically induce transparency medium

She Yan-Chao, Weixi Zhang, Denglong Wang

By using multiple-scale methods, we study analytically the propagation properties of the weak linear polarization probe optical field in a cold lifetime-broadened five-level V type atomic system via electromagnetically induced transparency. It is shown that with the strength of the coupling field increasing, the absorption of the probe optical field decreases rapidly and the group velocity of the probe optical field increases quickly under the consideration of linear effect. However, the velocity is several orders of magnitude slower than the light speed in vacuum. Meanwhile, we find that for the same magnetic field the nonlinear Faraday rotation direction is opposite to linear Faraday rotation, and its rotation angle grows bigger than that of linear Faraday rotation. These results mean that the Faraday rotation of the electromagnetically induced transparency medium can be controlled by the nonlinear effect.

Formation and propagation of ultraslow three-wave-vector optical solitons in a cold seven-level triple- Λ atomic system under Raman excitation

Liu-Gang Si, Wen‐Xing Yang, Xin‐You Lü +2 more

In this article, a theoretical scheme is proposed to investigate the formation and propagation of three-wave coupled vector optical solitons with ultraslow group velocities in a lifetime-broadened seven-state triple-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ atomic system under Raman excitation. We show that in the presence of a weak applied magnetic field that removes the degeneracy of the corresponding sublevels of the atomic medium, three continuous-wave control fields with circularly left or right polarized fields induce a quantum interference effect which can largely suppress the absorption of the three low-intensity pulsed fields, that is, the circularly ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ (right), the linearly $\ensuremath{\pi}$, and the circularly ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{+}$ (left) polarized fields converted from one weak linear-polarized probe field. By means of the standard method of multiple scales, we solve the equations of motion of atomic response and probe-control electromagnetic fields and derive three-coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations that govern the nonlinear evolution of the envelopes of the probe fields in this scheme. We then demonstrate that because of the nonlinear coupling to one another, the three probe fields can evolve into three-wave temporal, group velocity, and amplitude-matched optical solitons under appropriate conditions, which are produced from the delicate balance of the dispersion effects and the self- and cross-phase modulation effects. This scheme may thus pave the way to generate ultraslow vector optical solitons composed of three field components in a highly resonant atomic medium and result in a substantial impact on this field of nonlinear optics.

Generation of Solitons and Train of Soliton Pulses in Three Level Λ-Type Cold Atom Electromagnetically Induced Transparency System

Xu Zhao, Xing-Dong Zhao, Lu Zhou

We point out that a train of optical solitons can be generated in a cold-atom system by modulational instability (MI). By numerical simulation, we not only prove that the MI analysis of equations of motion for the atomic-state amplitudes and probe field can be replaced with that of one nonlinear Schrödinger equation, but also give the similarities and differences in the generation of the soliton wave train between the original Maxwell–Schrödinger equations and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Through the numerical simulation of the original equation of motion, we found that the generation of a single soliton or a couple of solitons can be achieved by adjusting the initial pulse amplitude, and propose a quantitative relationship. These results are different from those in previous reports, which mainly focus on the kind of nonlinear pulse that can propagate stably in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium. The merits and shortages of our scheme are also shown by comparing what with a fiber system. By comparison, the cold-atom system can be a candidate for generating solitons and a train of soliton waves.

Slow optical soliton pairs via electron spin coherence in a quantum well waveguide

Ji-Bing Liu, Na Liu, Chuan-Jia Shan +2 more

In this paper, we theoretically investigate the propagation properties of probe and mixing fields in a quantum well waveguide. This waveguide is driven by two strong control (pumping and coupling) fields and a weak probe field. Under appropriate parameters condition, the electron spin coherence can suppress the absorption and enhance the nonlinear susceptibilities of the probe (or mixing) field. This study reveals that probe (or mixing) field can form soliton pairs and propagate in the quantum well waveguide with slow group velocity. We also study the soliton collision and dynamics evolution. The results show that the propagation of soliton can be strongly modified by the electron spin coherence.

Dynamical control of soliton formation and propagation in a Y-type atomic system with dual ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency

Liu-Gang Si, Xin‐You Lü, Xiangying Hao +1 more

We have investigated the nonlinear interaction between a weak-pulsed probe field and a four-level Y-type atomic system with dual ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency. Two strong coupling fields induce a quantum destructive interference effect which depletes the population in the two nearly degenerate uppermost levels of the system and dramatically enhances the linear as well as nonlinear dispersion while simultaneously significantly suppressing the probe field absorption. We present the semiclassical quantum analysis of the system. The perturbation method of multiple scales is used to derive a differential envelope equation that describes the propagation of the probe field in the Y-type atomic system. It is then demonstrated that bright and dark optical solitons can be formed in this system.
