Abstract

We investigate the scaling function in the asymptotic limit of inclusive scattering for cases where the interactions contain a hard core. For a particle bound in a potential we give an analytic expression for the correction to the standard impulse approximation result. For the response of a many-body system the same correction is obtained as a finite multiple-scattering series. The approach to the asymptotic limit is studied numerically in a simple model.

Thermal collisions of high-Rydberg atoms with neutral particles. II. Higher-order corrections to the impulse approximation

For pt.I see ibid., vol.14, p.985 (1981). A general theory of the Rydberg atom inelastic scattering by perturber atoms has been developed previously, in which the leading term is the simple impulse amplitude, followed by the various correction terms. Theoretical estimates of these correction terms are presented in this paper, resulting in a general scaling formula. The non-impulse correction to the impulse approximation varies as n -2 at large principal quantum number n and depends on the signature of the electron-perturber scattering length. The distortion correction due to the interaction between the perturber and the Rydberg atomic core is large for the intermediate values of n<or approximately=20 behaves as n -4 , and depends on the perturber-core total cross section. The scaling formula derived here has been tested for the scattering systems consisting of Na and Rb targets and inert gas perturbers.

Perturbation expansions of the response function and the asymptotic regime

J. Besprosvany

Perturbation expansions of the response function S(q,\ensuremath{\omega}) of a many-body system in orders of any chosen component of the Hamiltonian are obtained. The response S(q,\ensuremath{\omega}) describes the inclusive scattering of a projectile interacting weakly with a target, where q and \ensuremath{\omega} are the momentum and energy transfer. Each term of a given order is written as an expectation value of products of paired Green's functions representing each initial- and final-state effects. For several choices of the perturbing operator, close expressions are obtained for the first orders of these expansions. The resulting terms represent partial summations over the Gersch series, whose relation to Green's-function expansions is established. Also, they are finite for singular potentials and are useful in the asymptotic regime of large q. In this regime they can give the dominant contribution to the response and initial- and final-state interactions of the hit particle and other particles in the system may be fully accounted for. Contributions of the n-particle density matrix can be separated for some expansions. In particular, an expression for the complete two-body contribution involving the hit particle is given.

The Asymptotic Behavior of Perturbation Expansions in Many-Body Problem and Superconducting State

Kenji Fukushima, Nobuyuki Fukuda

The convergence problem of perturbation expansions in the many-body problem is discussed by employing some simple models. The expectation value of rhe resolvent operator is analytic around the origin of the coupling constant so long as the system is enclosed in a finite volume, but as the volume tends to infinity with the density of particles kept constant, the question arises whether this limit is allowed to be taken prior to the sum of the perturbation series. Even if this is the case, the resulting series turns out to be usually divergent, but in some models we consider we can find a function whose asymptotic expansion coincides with this series. It is shown that for the repulsive interactions the function thus obtained gives a correct answer, while for the attractive interactions which lead to a superconducting state it is far from the true one. The asymptotic behavior of the perturbation series in the latter case is examined in some detail.

The short-range expansion for multiple well scattering theory

We expand the scattering amplitude and the scattering matrix around the zero-range limit, i.e., with point interactions, in the case when the potential has a finite number of wells. The lower-order terms are largely independent of the shape of the potentials.

Equivalence of the δ′ and the Hard Core Potentials

R.E. Schenter, Harry S. Zwibel, R. L. Cassola

The introduction of the hard core potential into the two-body problem forces the system wave function to vanish, if the interacting particles approach each other more closely than the hard core radius. In this paper it is shown that this “hard core effect” can also be obtained in the two-body problem by replacing the hard core potential with a δ′ interaction of suitable strength.
