Improvement of Quasi-Optimum Quantum Receiver for 3-PSK Coherent-State Signals

Abstract

The quasi-optimum quantum receiver proposed by Yamazaki can not necessarily overcome the standard quantum limit that is achieved by the heterodyne receiver for any average number of photons. We improve the quasi-optimum quantum receiver and show that our scheme always overcomes the standard quantum limit for 3-PSK signals.

Quantum displacement receiver with feedforward operation for MPSK signals

Shuro Izumi, Mitsuo Takeoka, M. Fujiwara +4 more

We propose and study quantum receivers for 3- and 4-ary phase-shift-keyed (PSK) coherent states to outperform the conventional limit, in the bit error rate (BER), achievable by heterodyne detection known as the standard quantum limit (SQL).

Near-quantum optimum receivers for the phase-quadrature coherent-state channel

Roy S. Bondurant

A theoretical analysis of two simple implementations for optical receivers that achieve near-quantum optimum performance for phase-quadrature coherent-state signaling is carried out. For a large received average photon count per symbol, N(s), the error probability is proportional to exp(-2N(s)) as opposed to the conventional heterodyne performance of exp(-N(s)/2).

Quasi-optimum Quantum Receiver for Binary Squeezed-state Signal

Kouichi Yamazaki

Construction method of an optical receiver is proposed for binary squeezed state signal, which has substantially lower noise properties than a conventional coherent state signal. The receiver can extract most of the performance of a squeezed light. Condition of optimum degree of squeezing are given to the proposed receivers for a binary phase-shift-keyed (BPSK) and an amplitude shift keyed (ASK) signals, respectively. It is also shown that the concept of this receiver can be applied for signals in any other quantum state which is generated from a coherent state by a unitary transformation.

Design and Analysis of an Iterative Quantum Receiver with Photon-Number-Resolving Detector

Chenjia Wei, Lingda Wang, Xiaolin Zhou +2 more

A new strategy of iterative quantum receivers with photon-number-resolving detectors is proposed to discriminate coherent states. The iterative quantum receiver provides a bit error rate closer to the Helstrom limit when compared with a recently proposed non-iterative quantum receiver. Moreover, the proposed iterative receiver is robust against various imperfections, such as mode mismatch, non-ideal quantum efficiency and dark counts. The simulation results indicate that the iterative receiver is capable of achieving 2.16 dB improvement upon the standard quantum limit, leaving only 0.65 dB from the Helstrom limit. Besides, with Turbo encoder and decoder, the iterative receiver gives about 1.46 dB improvement over the conventional non-iterative quantum receiver and approaches the equivalent Helstrom limit.

Quantum displacement receiver for M-ary phase-shift-keyed coherent states

Shuro Izumi, Masahiro Takeoka, Mikio Fujiwara +4 more

We propose quantum receivers for 3- and 4-ary phase-shift-keyed (PSK) coherent state signals to overcome the standard quantum limit (SQL). Our receiver, consisting of a displacement operation and on-off detectors with or without feedforward, provides an error probability performance beyond the SQL. We show feedforward operations can tolerate the requirement for the detector specifications.

Quantum Receiver beyond the Standard Quantum Limit of Coherent Optical Communication

Kenji Tsujino, Daiji Fukuda, Go Fujii +4 more

The most efficient modern optical communication is known as coherent communication, and its standard quantum limit is almost reachable with current technology. Though it has been predicted for a long time that this standard quantum limit could be overcome via quantum mechanically optimized receivers, such a performance has not been experimentally realized so far. Here we demonstrate the first unconditional evidence surpassing the standard quantum limit of coherent optical communication. We implement a quantum receiver with a simple linear optics configuration and achieve more than 90% of the total detection efficiency of the system. Such an efficient quantum receiver will provide a new way of extending the distance of amplification-free channels, as well as of realizing quantum information protocols based on coherent states and the loophole-free test of quantum mechanics.
