Radiation effects and defects in solids

Adiabatic evolution, quantum phases, and Landau-Zener transitions in strong

Abstract

We develop a method that allows the investigation of adiabatic evolution in periodically driven quantum systems. It is shown how Berry's geometrical phase emerges in quantum optics. We analyse microwave experiments performed on Rydberg atoms and suggest a new, non-perturbative mechanism to produce excited atomic states.

High-order quantum berry's adiabatic phase and its observable effect

Sun Changpu

New high-order adiabatic approximate method is proposed for the study of non-adiabatic evolution of a quantum system with slowly-changing Hamiltonian. The corresponding high-order Berry's adiabatic phases are used to describe the transition from a state to another, and their observable effects in quantum interference experiment are pointed out.

Evolvement on Phase Factors in Quantum Mechanics

Lou Ben-zhuo

The background and evolvement of phase problem in quantum mechanics is overviewed.Berry phase which was brought up originally by Berry M.V.for adiabatic evolution in linear systems is limited in practical applications.Berry phase is generalized to nonadiabatic evolution(AA phase),noncyclic quantum evolution(off-diagonal geometric phase)and nonlinear systems(geometric phase of general quantum states). It is pointed out that the off-diagonal geometric phase in nonlinear system is a new area for research. The prospect of this subject is viewed as well.

Berry phase in nonlinear systems

Jian Liu, Libin Fu

The Berry phase acquired by an eigenstate that experienced a nonlinear adiabatic evolution is investigated thoroughly. The circuit integral of the Berry connection of the instantaneous eigenstate cannot account for the adiabatic geometric phase, while the Bogoliubov excitations around the eigenstates are found to be accumulated during the nonlinear adiabatic evolution and contribute a finite phase of geometric nature. A two-mode model is used to illustrate our theory. Our theory is applicable to Bose-Einstein condensate, nonlinear light propagation, and Ginzburg-Landau equations for complex order parameters in condensed-matter physics.

Off-Diagonal Geometric Phases

Nicola Manini, F. Pistolesi

We investigate the adiabatic evolution of a set of nondegenerate eigenstates of a parametrized Hamiltonian. Their relative phase change can be related to geometric measurable quantities that extend the familiar concept of Berry phase to the evolution of more than one state. We present several physical systems where these concepts can be applied, including an experiment on microwave cavities for which off-diagonal phases can be determined from published data.

Geometrical phase in the cyclic evolution of non-Hermitian systems

G. Dattoli, R Mignani, A. Torre

The authors derive, by a biorthonormal state approach, the analogy of Berry's phase factor for open, non-conservative systems, for both adiabatic and non-adiabatic evolution. In the latter case, a (non-unitary) evolution operator method is exploited. An application is given to the optical supermode propagation in the free-electron laser.

Adiabatic geometric phase of a general quantum state

Biao Wu, Jie Liu

A geometric phase is found for the adiabatic evolution of a general quantum state;it reduces to Berry phase when applied to eigenstates. This new phase applies to both linear quantum systems and nonlinear quantum systems, and should be particularly useful for the latter for which the adiabatic evolution of a general quantum state cannot be described in terms of a superposition of eigenstates. For linear quantum systems, our new phase becomes a statistical average of the Berry phases for all eigenstates involved.
