Abstract

We consider the decay kinetics of a trapped spin-polarized gas of metastable triplet helium $^{4}\mathrm{He}(2^{3}S$ at ultralow temperatures. The sample lifetime is found to be determined by spin relaxation and Penning ionization, both induced by spin-dipole interaction in pair collisions. The rates of these processes are calculated. The Penning ionization proves to be 5 orders of magnitude slower than in the unpolarized case. The results indicate that spin-polarized triplet helium is a promising candidate for Bose-Einstein condensation.

Inelastic decay processes in a gas of spin-polarized triplet helium

Peter O. Fedichev, M. W. Reynolds, U. M. Rahmanov +1 more

We calculate the rates of elastic and inelastic collisions in a gas of spin-polarized triplet helium ${(}^{4}$${\mathrm{He}}^{\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\uparrow}) in a wide range of temperatures (0T0.5 K) and magnetic fields (0B100 kG), which includes all values of T and B relevant for trapped $^{4}\mathrm{He}^{\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\uparrow}. At densities n\ensuremath{\lesssim}${10}^{13}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3}$, where three-body recombination is not important, the main inelastic processes are spin relaxation and relaxation-induced ionization, both induced by the spin-dipole interaction in pair collisions. For ultralow temperatures T\ensuremath{\lesssim}10 mK and low magnetic fields B\ensuremath{\lesssim}100 G, the leading decay channel is relaxation-induced ionization. If either T or B is higher, the gas decays through spin relaxation. The ratio of elastic to inelastic rate is found to be large even in the nanokelvin regime, which is promising for evaporative cooling of $^{4}\mathrm{He}^{\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\uparrow}. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Close-coupled calculation of collisions of magnetostatically trapped metastable helium atoms

V. Venturi, Ian B. Whittingham, Paul J. Leo +1 more

A quantum-mechanical close-coupled calculation for collisions of spin-polarized triplet helium atoms in a magnetostatic trap is presented in which the Penning and associative ionization processes are represented by a complex optical potential. The rate coefficients for the spin relaxation and relaxation-induced Penning ionization processes for a range of magnetic fields and temperatures, spanning the cold and ultracold temperature regimes, have been calculated and the sensitivity of these results to uncertainties in the molecular potentials and autoionization width investigated. The rate constants for both elastic and inelastic processes were found to be particularly sensitive to the short-range ${}^{5}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{g}^{+}$ molecular potential and, to a lesser extent, the rate constants for relaxation-induced Penning ionization displayed sensitivity to the short-range form of the ${}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{g}^{+}$ molecular potential and the autoionization width.

Interaction of cold metastable neon atoms - towards Bose-Einstein condensation of neon

P. Spodem, Tobias Kraemer, A. Bunkowski +3 more

Summary form only given. The understanding of the interaction of ultracold atoms will be substantially extended by the experimental study of ultracold non-alkaline systems. Due to the special internal structure and the high internal energy, metastable noble gases will play a crucial role. The objective of our work is to attain a detailed study of the atomic structure and the interactions in a gas of ultracold metastable neon atoms. Ensembles of high phase space density and, if possible, Bose condensates shall be achieved. The elementary pair interaction as well as the collective interactions are to be characterized. Of special interest is Penning ionization as it is the main loss process in dense metastable atom traps. The degree of its suppression in a spin polarized gas will strongly affect the feasibility of a quantum-degenerate system of metastable atoms. In addition, metastable noble gas atoms will allow the implementation of novel diagnostics for the investigation of Bose condensates due to their high detectability. We want to make use of this advantage in order to investigate higher order correlation functions and study the laser-like behavior of Bose condensates and atom-laser outputs. We have achieved loading of 4/spl times/10/sup 8/ atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) and after efficient spin polarization of 2.5 /spl times/ 10/sup 8/ atoms in a Ioffe-Pritchard-type magnetic trap. We present a precision measurement of the lifetime of the 3s[3/2]/sub 2/-metastable state of neon which we could determine to 14.70(13)s. We report on the status of the determination of the elastic scattering rate, the rates of Penning ionization for spin-polarized and non-spin-polarized atom samples, and the implementation of evaporative cooling.

A Bose-Einstein Condensate of Metastable Atoms

A. Robert, O. Sirjean, Antoine Browaeys +5 more

We report the realization of a Bose-Einstein condensate of metastable atoms (helium in the lowest triplet state). The excitation energy of each atom with respect to the ground state is 20 electron volts, but inelastic processes that would destroy the sample are suppressed strongly enough in a spin-polarized sample to allow condensation. Our detection scheme takes advantage of the metastability to achieve detection of individual atoms as well as of the decay products of inelastic processes. This detection opens the way toward new studies in mesoscopic quantum statistical physics, as well as in atomic quantum optics.

Suppression of Penning ionization in a spin-polarized mixture of rubidium and He*

L. J. Byron, R. G. Dall, RuGway Wu +1 more

This paper presents the first study of the collision dynamics of an ultra-cold spin-polarized mixture of rubidium and metastable helium (He * ) atoms. Our experiment monitors ion production from the mixture for both magnetically polarized and unpolarized cases. In the unpolarized case, we observe an increase in our background ion rate. However, in the completely polarized sample the ion production is below the sensitivity of our experiment. Nonetheless, we determine an upper limit of 5 × 10 −12 cm 3 s −1 for the polarized rate constant (β Rb-He * ), which is two orders of magnitude below the unpolarized rate constant. Such a suppression of the He * – 87 Rb polarized rate was not apparent a priori and opens the intriguing possibility of creating a dual Bose–Einstein condensate comprising an alkali ground-state atom and an excited-state noble-gas atom.

Spin-dipole-induced lifetime of the least-bound Σg+5 state of He(2S13)+He(2S13)

Timothy J. Beams, G. Peach, Ian B. Whittingham

The properties of the least-bound vibrational level $(v=14)$ of the $^{5}\ensuremath{\Sigma}_{g}^{+}$ state formed during the ultracold collision of two spin-polarized metastable $2\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}S_{1}$ helium atoms are crucial to studies of photoassociation spectroscopy of metastable helium. We report a calculation of the autoionization lifetime ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{g}$ of this state induced by spin-dipole coupling of the $^{5}\ensuremath{\Sigma}_{g}^{+}$ state to the $^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}_{g}^{+}$ state from which Penning and associative ionization processes are highly probable. We find ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{g}\ensuremath{\approx}150\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}\mathrm{s}$, significantly larger than the recent experimental estimates of $(0.5\ensuremath{-}3)\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}\mathrm{s}$.
