NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF COUPLED SPIN-FERMION MODEL — PAIRING MECHANISM THROUGH EXTENDED KONDO SINGLET

Abstract

A coupled spin-fermion model is investigated by the exact diagonalization of finite lattices to discuss magnetic mechanism of superconductivity. An extended cloud of singlet liquid (extended Kondo singlet) is found around the fermion in a strong coupling region characterized by strong Kondo coupling and large transfer. The existence of the bound state of two fermions is found. The relevance of its Cooper pairing to high-Tc superconductivity is discussed. The relation to the weak coupling region and also to the small transfer region in this model is discussed.

Pairing of Fermious Coupled with Spin-1/2 Heisenberg System –Exact Diagonalization Study for Mechanism of High-Tc Superconductivity–

Yasuhiro Hatsugai, Masatoshi Imada, Naoto Nagaosa

A coupled spin-fermion system is investigated as a model of high- T c superconductivity. By the exact diagonalization technique, the binding energy of two fermions and several correlation functions in the ground state are calculated to study possible pairings of holes in orbitals of p π , p σ , d 3 z 2 - r 2 etc. The bound states of fermions are suggested in two regions in the parameter space. In the small transfer region, it is caused by local defects induced in the antiferromagnet at the fermion sites. The larger transfer region is characterized by the relatively extended disturbance of the antiferomagnetic correlation of the substrate spins, where the fermion forms singlet-like cloud around it. The latter is a characteristic feature of the antiferromagnetic fermion-spin coupling. The relevance of the latter region to high- T c superconductivity is discussed. The possibilities of bound states of fermions in Kondo lattices are also investigated.

Superconducting Correlations in the One-Dimensional Kondo Lattice Models under Magnetic Fields

Kohei Suzuki, Kazumasa Hattori

We analyze superconducting correlations in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice models with Ising anisotropy under transverse magnetic fields, using the density matrix renormalization group. For the spin-1/2 local spin model, the Ising anisotropy is introduced by the ferromagnetic Ising interaction between the local spins, while for the spin-1 model, it is taken by the single-ion anisotropy. The magnetic properties under the transverse fields for the spin-1/2 model are very similar to those for the spin-1 model [K. Suzuki and K. Hattori, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 88, 024707 (2019).]. For the superconducting correlations, we analyze various Cooper pairs within nearest-neighbor pairs including composite ones between the local spins and the electrons. We find that, for the spin-1/2 model, the superconducting correlations are highly enhanced in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state near the Kondo-plateau phase, where the conduction electrons and the local spins are strongly coupled with a finite spin gap for the Ising axis. This is a clear contrast to the model under the longitudinal magnetic fields, where there are no noticeable superconducting correlations. Competitions between the transverse magnetic field and the Kondo singlet formation lead to this enhanced superconducting correlations. For the spin-1 model, the single-ion anisotropy suppresses the superconducting correlation and there is no noticeable enhancement. We also examine the large Kondo exchange coupling limit. For the moderate ferromagnetic Ising interaction between the local spins, we find that another type of superconducting correlation is enhanced inside the ferromagnetic phase. We discuss a possible relation between our results and reentrant superconductivity in U-based ferromagnetic superconductors under transverse magnetic fields.

Spin-liquid ground state of the half-filled Kondo lattice in one dimension

Hirokazu Tsunetsugu, Yasuhiro Hatsugai, Kazuo Ueda +1 more

By finite-size analysis of exact diagonalization the existence of a finite spin gap is confirmed for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic coupling in the half-filled Kondo lattice model. For all finite values of antiferromagnetic coupling the system belongs to a class of coherent Kondo spin singlet, whereas for any finite ferromagnetic coupling it scales to a spin S=1 antiferromagnetic chain with a Haldane gap.

Mott metal-insulator transition in the Hubbard model

Fusayoshi J. Ohkawa

The Hubbard model in the strong-coupling regime is mainly studied by Kondo-lattice theory or 1/d expansion theory, with d the spatial dimensionality. In two dimensions and higher, the ground state within the Hilbert subspace with no order parameter is a normal Fermi liquid except for n=1 and U/W=+infinity, with n the electron density per unit cell, U the on-site repulsion, and W the bandwidth; the cooperation between the Kondo effect, which favors a local singlet on each unit cell, and a resonating-valence-bond effect, which favors a local singlet on each pair of nearest-neighbor unit cells, stabilizes the Fermi liquid, whose ground state is a singlet as a whole, in the strong-coupling regime. In the whole Hilbert space with no restriction, the normal Fermi liquid is unstable at least against a magnetic or superconducting state. This analysis confirms an early Fermi-liquid theory of high-temperature superconductivity, F. J. Ohkawa, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 26, L652 (1987). The ground state for n=1 and U/W=+infinity is a Mott insulator. Actual metal-insulator transitions cannot be explained within the Hubbard model. In order to explain them, the electron-phonon interaction, multi-band or multi-orbital effects, and effects of disorder should be considered beyond the Hubbard model. The crossover between local-moment magnetism and itinerant-electron magnetism corresponds to that between a localized spin and a normal Fermi liquid in the Kondo effect and it is simply a Mott metal-insulator crossover.

Fermi surface change and $d$-wave superconductivity in the square lattice Kondo-Heisenberg model

Alexander Nikolaenko, Riccardo Rende, Luciano Loris Viteritti +2 more

We study the two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model on a square lattice, with the conduction electrons away from half-filling, using neural network quantum states. Mapping the ground-state phase diagram as a function of the Kondo and Heisenberg couplings, we identify (i) at weak Kondo coupling, antiferromagnetic Néel order with a Fermi surface whose enclosed area counts only the conduction electrons and is insensitive to the Néel order, and (ii) at strong coupling, a heavy Fermi liquid with a Fermi surface whose enclosed area counts both the conduction electrons and the spins. In the crossover between these regimes, we find $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductivity, evidenced by off-diagonal long-range order in the pair-pair correlations and a pairing-amplitude dome that coexists with the underlying magnetic phase. Our results establish Fermi volume change and unconventional superconductivity as intrinsic features of the two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model.

Spin gaps in two models of strongly correlated electron systems

Arnold E. Sikkema

Two aspects of strongly correlated electron systems are studied in this thesis. Hubbard-type models are thought to be at the basis of high-critical-temperature superconductivity. One interaction which has not had much study is the nearest-neighbour hopping of on-site singlet pairs. We refine earlier renormalization group arguments and, using the density-matrix renormalization group method, numerically confirm their prediction that a spin gap opens at infinitesimal pair-hopping amplitude V > 0 in the one-dimensional tight-binding model. We also find a phase separation transition at a finite V > 0 as well as a spin-gap transition at a finite V < 0. The exotic magnetic behaviour of heavy-fermion materials involves an interplay between the screening of local moments from each other and the formation of a magnetic state of long range order. While the single-impurity Kondo Hamiltonian is thought to model some aspects of this behaviour, the properties of the Kondo lattice model away from half-filling are largely unknown. We determine the presence of a spin-gap region in the phase diagram of the one-dimensional Heisenberg-Kondo lattice model and make predictions about certain concealed dimerization order parameters.
