Correlation Length of theS=2Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain

Abstract

Temperature dependence of the correlation length of the one-dimensional S =2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is investigated numerically, to compare with those of the S =1/2, 1, 3/2 models. The correlation length of the S =2 model is found to be saturated to a value ξ -1 ≃0.012(2) as T →0, which confirms the Haldane conjecture. Combined with the estimate ξ -1 ≃0.16 of the S =1 model by other authors, the present estimate is well explained by ξ -1 ∼ S exp (-π S ).

Spin correlation function of theS=1antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain by the large-cluster-decomposition Monte Carlo method

K. Nomura

We calculate correlation functions of a one-dimensional spin S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model by the large-cluster-decomposition Monte Carlo method. We find that the correlation functions are well approximated by modified Bessel functions. This result supports Haldane's conjecture, and the correlation length agrees with that obtained from spin-wave theory using elementary excitation data.

Thermal Bethe-ansatz study of the correlation length of the one-dimensionalS=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

K. Nomura, Miki Yamada

We investigate the correlation length of the one-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet by the thermal Bethe-ansatz method proposed by Koma. The numerical result shows that the correlation length diverges as \ensuremath{\xi}\ensuremath{\sim}${\mathit{T}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ at low temperatures with logarithmic corrections. This logarithmic correction can be explained by conformal field theory.

Thermal Properties of Chains of Antiferromagnetically Coupled Spins with s = 1: Numerical Evidence of the Haldane Gap at Nonzero Temperatures

Thomas Delica, Klaas Kopinga, Hajo Leschke +1 more

By the numerical transfer-matrix method we have computed several thermal properties for a Heisenberg chain of 150 antiferromagnetically coupled spins with quantum number s = 1. We dispensed with any extrapolation to the infinite chain, because the results for the magnetization, the susceptibility, the correlation length, and the static structure factor at wave number q = π have been found to be insensitive to a further increase of the chain length in the temperature regime considered. The characteristic features of our results, that occur at sufficiently low temperatures and low applied fields, can convincingly be explained by the existence of a gap in the excitation spectrum of the order of 0.4 coupling constants and, therefore, nicely complement previous numerical results for corresponding ground-state properties. We have also performed computations for a chain with an additional single-site anisotropy. We find, for appropriate parameter values, excellent agreement with experimental data for the quasi-one-dimensional model compound NENP.

S=2 antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain

Ulrich Schollwöck, O. Golinelli, Th. Jolicœur

We have investigated Haldane's conjecture for the S=2 antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain with nearest-neighbor exchange J. Using a density matrix renormalization group algorithm for chains up to L=350 spins, we find in the thermodynamic limit a finite gap of \ensuremath{\Delta}=0.085(5)J and a finite spin-spin correlation length \ensuremath{\xi}=49(1) lattice spacings. We have confirmed the gap value by a zero-temperature quantum Monte Carlo study. We show that the ground state has a hidden topological order that is revealed in a nonlocal string correlation function which saturates to a nonzero value in the thermodynamic limit. We investigate the behavior of the spin-2 chain under an easy-plane anisotropy D(${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}}^{\mathit{z}}$${)}^{2}$, D\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0, and find that the Haldane and the large-D phase are separated by an XY phase. The string correlation function vanishes only in the D\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty} limit and does not distinguish between the Haldane phase and the perturbative large-D phase. An analysis of the transition mechanism and of the S=2 phase diagram in the presence of easy-plane and exchange anisotropy, markedly different from the S=1 phase diagram, allow us to conjecture how the classical limit is reached from increasing integer spins. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Low-temperature behavior of the correlation length and the susceptibility of the ferromagnetic quantum Heisenberg chain

Peter Kopietz

The renormalization-group recursion relations for the spin-S nearest-neighbor quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet recently derived by Chakravarty and the present author are analyzed in one dimension. It is found that the susecptibility \ensuremath{\chi} is given at low temperatures T by T\ensuremath{\chi}=${C}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(0)}$(${\mathrm{JS}}^{2}$/T) [1+${C}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(1)}$\ensuremath{\eta}+O(${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{2}$)], where J is the exchange coupling and the dimensionless expansion parameter \ensuremath{\eta} is given by \ensuremath{\eta}=${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$(T/${\mathrm{JS}}^{3}$${)}^{1/2}$. For the correlation length \ensuremath{\xi} we find (\ensuremath{\xi}/a)=${C}_{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{(0)}$(${\mathrm{JS}}^{2}$/T) [1+${C}_{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{(1)}$\ensuremath{\eta}+O(${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{2}$)], where a is the lattice spacing. The values of the coefficients ${C}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(j)}$ and ${C}_{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{(j)}$ (j=0,1), have been determined by fitting the above expressions with Monte Carlo data obtained for the S=1/2 Heisenberg chain at temperatures as low as T/J=0.01.

Temperature Dependence of the Correlation Length of <SizSjz> in Spin-1/2 Alternating Heisenberg-XYAntiferromagnets in One Dimension

Kiyomi Okamoto

We conjecture the temperature dependence of the correlation length ξ of the spin-spin correlation function < S i z S j z > in spin-1/2 alternating Heisenberg- X Y antifer-romagnets. We use the phase representation and the self-consistent harmonic approx-imation to evaluate < S i z S j z >. The correlation length ξ as a furtction of the temperaturehas a peak at T ∼ ε g , where ε g is the energy gap between the ground state and the first excited state.
