Influence of dipolar interaction on critical behaviour

Abstract

The behaviour of a d=4- epsilon dimensional model with short-range and weak dipolar interaction is considered near its critical point. The introduction of a dominant interaction between m<or=d 'spin' components allows the discussion of various models including the uniaxial case m=1. Using a paraquat-graph approach it is shown that for m<or= epsilon the increase of both the transverse and the longitudinal spin fluctuations in the m-dimensional subspace contribute to the critical behaviour leading to the peculiar behaviour for m=1. The effective and subcritical exponents are calculated to O( epsilon ) and O(m 0 ). It is found that gamma eff exhibits a pronounced minimum between its asymptotic dipolar and short-range-only values.

Critical Behavior of Magnets with Dipolar Interactions. I. Renormalization Group near Four Dimensions

Amnon Aharony A, Michael Ellis Fisher

The exact renormalization-group approach of Wilson is used to study the critical behavior for $T>{T}_{c}$, $H=0$, and small $\ensuremath{\epsilon}>0$, of an isotropic ferromagnetic system in $d=4\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ dimensions, with exchange and dipolar interactions between $d$-component spins. Normal isotropic Heisenberg behavior with $\frac{1}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}\ensuremath{\approx}\frac{1}{2\ensuremath{\nu}}\ensuremath{\approx}1\ensuremath{-}\frac{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}{4}$ (to first order in $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$) is retained for $t=(\frac{T}{{T}_{c}})\ensuremath{-}1\ensuremath{\ll}\frac{G}{J{a}^{d}}$, where $G=\frac{{(g{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B})}^{2}}{2}$ measures the strength of the dipole-dipole interactions, $J$ is the short-range exchange parameter, and $a$ is the lattice spacing. When ${t}^{\ensuremath{\varphi}}\ensuremath{\approx}\frac{G}{J{a}^{d}}$, where $\ensuremath{\varphi}\ensuremath{\approx}1+\frac{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}{4}$, crossover occurs to a characteristic dipolar behavior described by a new fixed point of the recursion relations. For $t\ensuremath{\ll}\frac{G}{J{a}^{d}}$ one thus finds $\frac{1}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}\ensuremath{\approx}\frac{1}{2\ensuremath{\nu}}\ensuremath{\approx}1\ensuremath{-}\frac{9\ensuremath{\epsilon}}{34}$ {and, for spins of $n d$ components, $\frac{1}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}\ensuremath{\approx}\frac{1}{2\ensuremath{\nu}}\ensuremath{\approx}1\ensuremath{-}[\frac{(6n+3)}{2(6n+11)}]\ensuremath{\epsilon}$, which agrees with spherical-model results when $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$}. In the dipolar regime the spin-correlation function $〈{s}_{q}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}{s}_{\ensuremath{-}q}^{\ensuremath{\beta}}〉$ has a factor [${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\beta}}\ensuremath{-}(\frac{{q}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}{q}^{\ensuremath{\beta}}}{{q}^{2}})$], which suppresses longitudinal spin fluctuations; the susceptibilities ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ display the expected demagnetization effects. It is found that dipolar anistropies derving from the lattice structure produce weak instabilities which should be hard to detect although their effects are not fully elucidated. Extensions of the results to nonzero magnetic fields, and to anistropic exchange interactions are indicated; the experimental situation is mentioned briefly.

Dipolar crossover of the two-spin correlation function

M. Santos

Renormalisation group recursion relations and matching techniques are used to evaluate to O( epsilon ) the crossover scaling function describing the competition between isotropic short-range and dipolar critical behaviours in the two-point correlation function of a magnetic system above T c in zero field. The scaling function, obtained in closed form, interpolates between the small-q (q xi <<1) and large-q (q xi >>1) limits where asymptotic expressions are written. The results for the effective critical exponents are compared with neutron scattering measurements.

Dipolar crossover effects for uniaxial ferromagnets and ferroelectrics

David Bailin, A. Love

The dipolar-interaction induced crossover of a uniaxial ferromagnet (or ferroelectric) from Ising critical behaviour in the primary critical region to Gaussian critical behaviour in the secondary critical region is studied. The crossover scaling functions for the susceptibility and specific heat are calculated by renormalisation group methods at leading order in epsilon =4-d.

Quantum effects in the critical properties of X-Y model in a transverse magnetic field

Paul R. Gerber, H Beck

The critical properties of a quantum-mechanical X-Y model in a transverse magnetic field are calculated. At zero temperature near the critical field Gamma c a Gaussian type behaviour is observed for dimensions higher than two. The exponent which describes the rescaling of frequencies is here z=2. For d<2 a renormalisation group treatment produces a non-trivial fixed point. However, the exponents remain unchanged to first order in epsilon =2-d.

Random Ising model with long-range interactions

Alba Theumann

The critical properties of a random Ising model with long-range isotropic interactions decaying as R -(d+ sigma ) are analysed by using renormalisation group methods in an expansion in epsilon '=2 sigma -d, where d is dimensionality. For epsilon '>O the critical behaviour is described by a stable fixed point O( epsilon 1 2/') in the physical region of parameter space. The crossover to short-range behaviour is analysed and takes place when sigma =2+ epsilon /106, epsilon =4-d>O. There is then a small region O< sigma -2<O( epsilon ) where the system is still dominated by long-range behaviour. The results for d=1 are compared with those obtained previously for the random hierarchical model and it is found that the two models do not show the same critical behaviour in the epsilon ' expansion.

Critical behaviour of compressible Ising models at marginal dimensionalities

M. Vallade, Janine Lajzerowicz

Renormalization group methods are applied to study the critical behaviour of a compressible n-component Ising model with short range interactions at d = 4 and a one component Ising model with dipolar interactions at d = 3. The recursion equations are exactly solved in the case of an elastic system of spherical symmetry (d = 4) or cylindrical symmetry (d = 3); new types of logarithmic corrections, corresponding to a Fisher renormalization at marginal dimensions, are found. It is shown that the system exhibits a first-order transition for constant pressure external conditions or when anisotropy is taken into account. The relevance of the calculations to the critical behaviour of uniaxial ferroelectrics is discussed.
