The cluster investigation of the q‐state potts model

Abstract

Abstract The thermodynamics of the q‐state Potts model is calculated by the cluster approximation. With two, three, and four particles as the basic cluster the free energy is obtained for any q. It is found that the transition is of the first order for all two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional Potts models. In the case of planar lattices for q = 3 and q = 4 it is found that the critical point approaches the Curie‐Weiss temperature but the discontinuity of the order parameter remains almost equal to that obtained by the mean‐field approximation.

Study of Cluster Distributions in Two-dimensional q-State Potts Model

Meral Aydın, Y. Gündüç, Tarık Çelik

Abstract The two-dimensional Potts Model with 2 to 10 states is studied using a cluster algorithm to calculate fluctuations in cluster size, distributions of cluster sizes as well as commonly used quantities like equilibrium averages and the histograms for energy and the order parameter. Results provide information about the variation of cluster sizes depending on the temperature and the number of states. They also give evidence for first-order transition when energy and the order parameter related measurables are inconclusive on small size lattices.

First order phase transitions and the three state Potts model

Henk W. J. Blöte, Robert H. Swendsen

We have used the Monte Carlo renormalization group method to study the order-disorder phase transition of the three and four dimensional, three-state Potts model. In both cases, the transition appears to be first order. However, no evidence for a discontinuity fixed point associated with these transitions was found. Instead, the existence of a nearby second order fixed point just beyond the first order transition could be inferred from the RG flow in the ordered as well as in the disordered state. These results imply that the thermodynamic quantities are analytically continuable into the metastable regions, and that apart from discontinuities caused by the intersection of the two free-energy branches, no additional singularities occur at the transition.

Variational analyses of series expansions of the Potts model

H. H. Chen, Felix Lee, Yi-Chun Kao

A linked-cluster type of series expansion of the free energy with a variational parameter is developed to the eighth order for the q-state Potts model. The order parameter and the internal energy are then derived. By analyzing these series expansions, critical temperatures ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$, latent heats, and discontinuities of the order parameters at ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ are determined for the cubic lattices.

Series studies of the four-state Potts model

R.V. Ditzian, Leo P. Kadanoff

The four-state Potts model is studied via series expansions. Free energy and susceptibility high-temperature series are calculated for hypercubic lattices of general dimensionality. Estimates of critical temperatures and critical indices gamma and alpha are obtained as functions of dimensionality. The free energy, magnetisation, and susceptibility low-temperature series are calculated for d=4. The high-and low-temperature series together indicate that the phase transition in this dimensionality is first order. From this result the authors suggest that the apparent second-order transitions shown by the susceptibility for d>or=4 might be explained as spinodal pseudotransitions.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional three-state Potts model with an additional mean-field interaction

Alessandro Campa, Vahan Hovhannisyan, Stefano Ruffo +1 more

Abstract We derive the phase diagram of the one-dimensional three-state Potts model with an additional mean-field interaction in the canonical ensemble. The free energy is obtained by mapping the model onto the spin-1 Blume–Emery–Griffiths model and solving it by using a Hubbard–Stratonovich transformation combined with the transfer matrix method. A complex structure with lines of first-order transitions, two triple points and a critical point appears at finite temperature. The phase diagram is two-dimensional, since there are two adjustable parameters, the nearest-neighbour coupling K and the temperature T . We show that the phase diagram does not present second-order phase transition lines, due to the fact that the order parameter is not a symmetry-breaking one. Quite remarkably, we are able to determine analytically one of the first-order phase transition lines. We also prove that, when the nearest-neighbour coupling K is large and negative, the first-order transition temperature becomes asymptotically independent of K .

Cluster Study in the Three-Dimensional 3-State Potts Model

M. Aydin, T. Çelik, Y. Gündüç

The three-dimensional 3-state Potts model has been investigated by examining the average cluster size distributions. Cluster distributions give evidence for the weak first-order nature of the transition for lattice sizes as small as 163, where the energy histogram method fails to exhibit the true nature of the transition.
