Abstract

We consider a cubic-quintic Gross–Pitaevskii equation which governs the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensate matter waves with time-dependent scattering length and spatiotemporal complex potential. By introducing phase-imprint parameters in the system, we present the integrable condition for the equation and obtain the exact analytical solutions, which describe the propagation of a solitary wave. By applying specific time-modulated feeding/loss functional parameter, various types of magnetic trap strengths, and phase-imprint parameters, the dynamics of the solutions can be controlled. Solitary wave solutions with breathing and snaking behaviors are reported.

Management of matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with time-dependent atomic scattering length in a time-dependent parabolic complex potential

Emmanuel Kengne, Weiqiang Liu

In this paper, we consider a Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with a time-dependent nonlinearity and a spatiotemporal complex linear term which describes the dynamics of matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with time-dependent interatomic interactions in a parabolic potential in the presence of feeding or loss of atoms. We establish the integrability conditions under which analytical solutions describing the modulational instability and the propagation of both bright and dark solitary waves on a continuous wave background are obtained. The obtained integrability conditions also appear as the conditions under which the solitary waves of the BECs can be managed by controlling the functional gain or loss parameter. For specific BECs, the dynamics of bright and dark solitons are investigated analytically through the found exact solutions of the GP equation. Our results show that under the integrability conditions, the gain or loss parameter of the GP equation can be used to manage the motion of both bright and dark solitons. We show that for BECs with loss (gain) of atoms, the bright and dark solitons during their propagation have a compression (broadening) in their width. Furthermore, under a safe range of parameters and under the integrability conditions, it is possible to squeeze a bright soliton of BECs with loss of atoms into the assumed peak matter density, which can provide an experimental tool for investigating the range of validity of the 1D GP equation. Our results also reveal that under the conditions of the solitary wave management, neither the injection or the ejection of atoms from the condensate affects the soliton peak during its propagation.

Matter-wave solitons of Bose–Einstein condensates with time-dependent complex potentials

Emmanuel Kengne, Ahmed Lakhssassi

To analytically investigate the matter-wave solitons of Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in time-dependent complex potential, we consider a cubic-quintic Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation with distributed coefficients and a dissipative term. By introducing a suitable ansatz, we establish the criterion of the modulational instability (MI) of the system and present an explicit expression for the growth rate of a purely growing MI. Effects of the parabolic background potential, as well as of the linear potential, the gain/loss parameter, and the two- and three-body interatomic interactions on the MI are investigated. We show how the feeding/loss parameter can be well used to control the instability of the system. The analytical resolution of the considered GP equation leads to exact bright, dark and kink solitary wave solutions which are used to investigate analytically the dynamics of matter-wave solitons in BECs under consideration. These analytical investigations show that the amplitude and the motion of bright, dark and kink solitary waves depend on the strengths of the two- and three-body interatomic interactions, as well as on the strengths of the external trapping potential and the parameter of the gain/loss of atoms in the condensate.

Modulational instability and bright solitary wave solution for Bose–Einstein condensates with time-dependent scattering length and harmonic potential

Lei Wu, Jie-Fang Zhang, Lu Li

We consider the one-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation, which governs the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) matter waves with time-dependent scattering length and a harmonic trapping potential. We present the integrable condition for the one-dimensional GP equation and obtain the exact analytical solution which describes the modulational instability and the propagation of a bright solitary wave on a continuous wave (cw) background. Moreover, by employing the adiabatic perturbation theory for a bright soliton, we obtain approximative bright solitary wave solutions under near-integrable conditions. Both the exact and approximative solutions show that the amplitude of a bright solitary wave with zero boundary condition depends on the scattering length while its motion depends on the external trapping potential.

Phase engineering, modulational instability, and solitons of Gross–Pitaevskii-type equations in 1+1 dimensions

Emmanuel Kengne, Ahmed Lakhssassi, Wu‐Ming Liu +1 more

Motivated by recent proposals of "collisionally inhomogeneous" Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), which have a spatially modulated scattering length, we introduce a phase imprint into the macroscopic order parameter governing the dynamics of BECs with spatiotemporal varying scattering length described by a cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation and then suitably engineer the imprinted phase to generate the modified GP equation, also called the cubic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. This equation describes the dynamics of condensates with two-body (attractive and repulsive) interactions in a time-varying quadratic external potential. We then carry out a theoretical analysis which invokes a lens-type transformation that converts the cubic derivative NLS equation into a modified NLS equation with only explicit temporal dependence. Our analysis suggests a particular interest in a specific time-varying potential with the strength of the magnetic trap ~1/(t+t(*))(2). For a time-varying quadratic external potential of this kind, an explicit expression for the growth rate of a purely growing modulational instability is presented and analyzed. We point out the effect of the imprint parameter and the parameter t(*) on the instability growth rate, as well as on the solitary waves of the BECs.

Compensation process and generation of chirped femtosecond solitons and double-kink solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates with time-dependent atomic scattering length in a time-varying complex potential

Emmanuel Kengne, Ahmed Lakhssassi

Abstract We consider the one-dimensional (1D) cubic-quintic Gross--Pitaevskii (GP)nequation, which governs the dynamics of Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) matter waves with time-varying scattering length and loss/gain of atoms in a harmonic trapping potential. We derive the integrability conditions and the compensation condition for the 1D GP equation and obtain, with the help of a cubic-quintic nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger (NLS) equation with self-steepening and self-frequency shift, exact analytical solitonlike solutions with the corresponding frequency chirp which describe the dynamics of femtosecond solitons and double-kink solitons propagating on a vanishing background. Our investigation shows that under the compensation condition, the matter wave solitons maintain a constant amplitude, the amplitude of the frequency chirp depends on the scattering length, while the motion of both the matter wave solitons and the corresponding chirp depend on the external trapping potential. More interesting, the frequency chirps are localized and their feature depends on the sign of the self-steepening parameter. Our study also shows that our exact solutions can be used to describe the compression of matter wave solitons when the absolute value of the s-wave scattering length increases with time.

Modulational instability and soliton control in a cubic–quintic dissipative Gross–Pitaevskii equation with distributed coefficients*

Emmanuel Kengne, Wu‐Ming Liu

Abstract In this work, we consider the generalized cubic–quintic dissipative Gross–Pitaevskii equation, which governs the dynamics of matter wave solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates with two- and three-body interatomic interactions in a spatiotemporal-dependent dissipative potential consisting of parabolic, linear, and complex terms. By using the ansatz method, the modulational instability and gray, kink, and bright soliton solutions are presented under certain parametric conditions. We found that the complex potential, related to the feeding or the loss of atoms by the condensates seriously modifies the instability and stability domain, while the linear potential has not effect on the stability of the system. With the use of exact analytical soliton-like solutions, we investigate analytically the solitons control system, and the results show that the soliton control system may relax the limitations to parametric conditions. We found that the motion of matter wave solitons in the systems can be manipulated by controlling both the external harmonic and linear trapping potentials. We have established that the amplitude of the matter wave solitons keep no change in propagating in the system though the total number of the condensate atoms decreases (increases) when the condensate losses (gains) atoms. We also showed that the three-body interatomic interactions is responsible of the soliton compression. Our results also revealed that the found exact soliton-like solutions can be used to describe the compression of matter wave solitons in BEC system with loss of atoms.
