Abstract

Linear polarization is shown to dominate circular polarization cross sections strongly for high-order multiphoton ionization of atoms.Received 12 September 1972DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.29.1129©1972 American Physical Society

Polarization effect in multiphoton ionization of hydrogen from metastable 2S state

Bhaskar J. Choudhury

A general analytical result has been obtained for multiphoton ionization of hydrogen from metastable 2S state. Numerical results are given for the ratio of cross sections of ionization by linearly polarized and circularly polarized light for N=2,3,4 (where N is the number of photons absorbed). In all these cases the cross section for linearly polarized light dominates over the cross section for circularly polarized light.

Effect of light polarization in multiphoton ionization

Serge Klarsfeld, A. Maquet

Multiphoton ionization rates for circular and linear polarization are calculated at threshold for various hydrogenic s states in the framework of ordinary perturbation theory. Circularly polarized light turns out to be more efficient in many cases.
