Abstract

A numerical study is made of the dynamics of lasing in a resonantly absorbing gas within a system where amplification is provided by a feedback loop. The mechanism of self-limitation of the emitted pulse, associated with saturation of the transition, is identified. The possibility of optimization of the lasing process is considered.

Compensation of self-focusing distortions in quasiresonant amplification of a light pulse

A. Yu. Okulov, А. Н. Ораевский

A theoretical analysis is made of the compensation of a positive nonlinear refractive index of insulators containing impurities by saturation of the refractive index in the anomalous dispersion region. The exact solutions are obtained for self-similar amplification of a laser pulse under conditions of homogeneous broadening of a resonant transition. It is shown that profiling of the time envelope of a steady-state bleaching wave of a saturable absorber together with detuning of the pulse frequency upward from resonance makes it possible to increase the threshold of small-scale self-focusing.

Stimulated emission due to Doppler-free transitions in optically pumped lasers

A. K. Popov, Vladimir M. Shalaev

An analysis is made of conditions for achieving amplification due to transitions whose Doppler broadening is eliminated (under optical pumping) by light shifts which depend on the atomic velocity. An investigation is made of the spectral characteristics of this amplification process and of the features of lasing due to these transitions. The advantages of lasing due to this type of pumping are shown and possibilities for achieving unidirectional lasing in ring resonators are indicated.

Transient concurrent interaction of two optical waves in an absorbing gas for an arbitrary detuning from a resonance

Anatolii Petrovich Sukhorukov, V N Titov, O E Tret'yakov

A two-level system was used in a computer simulation of a transient concurrent interaction of two optical pulses of duration not exceeding the VT relaxation time. The interaction was assumed to take place in a resonantly absorbing gas and the case with feedback was considered. A study was made of the influence of the detuning of the laser radiation frequency from the centre of an absorption line on the dynamics of the light-induced perturbation of the absorbance and on energy exchange between the two waves.

Structure of lasing modes generated as a result of a four-wave interaction with feedback

Alexander A. Betin, N. Yu. Rusov

The diffraction approximation is used to determine the structure of the radiation generated as a result of a four-wave interaction with feedback and the conditions for phase conjugation are identified. Phase conjugation can be expected in the case of a signal beam with a smooth distribution of the amplitude if the transverse size of this beam decreases as a result of passing through a feedback loop. In the case of a multimode signal beam it is additionally necessary to ensure that the resonator length or the length of the nonlinear medium exceeds the spreading length of the transverse inhomogeneity of the field.

Degenerate four-wave interaction in a resonant medium allowing for variation of the pump waves

Alexander A. Betin, A. I. Dyatlov, S. N. Kulagina +2 more

A theoretical analysis is made of the efficiency of wavefront reversal under conditions of a degenerate form of the four-wave interaction in a resonantly absorbing (amplifying) medium allowing for changes in the pump waves as a result of their natural resonant absorption (amplification). The coefficient of reflection into a reversed wave is obtained as a function of the optical thickness of a layer of the medium, the boundary values of the pump wave intensity, and the shift of the field frequency from the line center. The optimal values of these parameters and the corresponding maximum reflection coefficient are determined.
