Space-time—dependent spin correlation of the one-dimensional Ising model with a transverse field. Application to higher dimensions

Abstract

The correlation functions ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{xx}}(R,t)$ and ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{yy}}(R,t)$ are calculated for the one-dimensional Ising model with a transverse field $h$ at $T=0$. This model corresponds to the $X Y$ model with $\ensuremath{\gamma}=1$, and is equivalent to the two-dimensional anisotropic (${J}_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$, ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$) Ising model. The additional dimension in the classical model is the imaginary time of the quantum model. For all values of $h$, ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{yy}}(R,t)=\ensuremath{-}(\frac{1}{{h}^{2}})(\frac{{\ensuremath{\partial}}^{2}}{\ensuremath{\partial}{t}^{2}}){\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{xx}}(R,t)$. At the critical field $h={h}_{c}=1$, ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{\mathrm{xx}}(R,t)\ensuremath{\sim}{({R}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{t}^{2})}^{\frac{\ensuremath{-}1}{8}}$. For $h<1,h>1$ the results already obtained for the $\mathrm{XY}$ model are recovered. We give some consequences from this equivalence in higher dimension, concerning the behavior of the correlation function at the critical field at $T=0$.

Dynamics of the strong anisotropic three-dimensional Ising model in a transverse field

J. A. Plascak, F. C. Sá Barreto, Antonio S. T. Pires

The dynamics of the three-dimensional anisotropic spin-\textonehalf{} Ising model in a transverse field is studied above ${T}_{c}$ by a method in which the coupled-chain problem is reduced to that of a single chain in an effective field. The problem of a single chain is studied by means of Mori's continued-fraction expansion in a four-pole approximation. The moments are obtained by using the time-dependent correlation function calculated in the $c$-cyclic and in the improved $c$-cyclic approximations [J. Phys. A 13, 223 (1980)]. A comparison between these two approximations is done by calculating the critical temperature as function of the tunneling field. The one-dimensional correlation length is obtained, and it agrees well with the experimental results for the quasi-one-dimensional ferroelectric Cs${\mathrm{D}}_{2}$P${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$.

Dynamic correlation functions for one-dimensional quantum-spin systems: New results based on a rigorous approach

Gerhard H. Muller, Robert E. Shrock

We present new results on the time-dependent correlation functions ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}_{n}(t)=4〈{S}_{0}^{\ensuremath{\xi}}(t){S}_{n}^{\ensuremath{\xi}}〉$, $\ensuremath{\xi}=x,y$, at zero temperature of the one-dimensional $S=\frac{1}{2}$ isotropic $\mathrm{XY}$ model ($h=\ensuremath{\gamma}=0$) and of the transverse Ising (TI) model at the critical magnetic field ($h=\ensuremath{\gamma}=1$). Both models are characterized by special cases of the Hamiltonian $H=\ensuremath{-}J\ensuremath{\Sigma}{l}^{}[(1+\ensuremath{\gamma}){S}_{l}^{x}{S}_{l+1}^{x}+(1\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}){S}_{l}^{y}{S}_{l+1}^{y}+h{S}_{1}^{z}]$. We have derived exact results on the long-time asymptotic expansions of the autocorrelation functions ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}_{0}(0)$ and on the singularities of their frequency-dependent Fourier transforms ${\ensuremath{\Phi}}_{0}^{\ensuremath{\xi}\ensuremath{\xi}}(\ensuremath{\omega})$. We have also determined the latter functions by high-precision numerical calculations. The functions ${\ensuremath{\Phi}}_{0}^{\ensuremath{\xi}\ensuremath{\xi}}(\ensuremath{\omega})$, $\ensuremath{\xi}=x,y$, have singularities at the infinite sequence of frequencies $\ensuremath{\omega}=m{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$, $m=0,1,2,3,\dots{}$, where ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}=J$ for the $\mathrm{XY}$ model and ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}=2J$ for the TI model. In the TI case, the leading singularities in ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{0}^{\mathrm{xx}}(\ensuremath{\omega})$ are alternately one-sided and two-sided power-law singularities, the first two of which (at $\ensuremath{\omega}=0,2J$) are divergent. The dominant singularities in the $\mathrm{XY}$ case are alternate one-sided power laws and two-sided power laws with logarithmic corrections, the first two of which (at $\ensuremath{\omega}=0,J$) are divergent. The singularities at higher frequencies in both models are finite and become increasingly weaker. We point out that the nonanalyticities at $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\ne}0$ are intrinsic features of the discrete quantum chain and have therefore not been found in the context of a continuum analysis (Luttinger model). At least the most prominent features of our new results should be observable in low-temperature dynamical experiments on quasi-one-dimensional compounds such as the $\mathrm{XY}$-like substances ${\mathrm{Cs}}_{2}$Co${\mathrm{Cl}}_{4}$ and Pr${\mathrm{Cl}}_{3}$ and the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ Ising-like substance CsCo${\mathrm{Cl}}_{3}$${\mathrm{\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}}2\mathrm{H}}_{2}$O.

Quantum Critical Dynamics of the Random Transverse Field Ising Spin Chain

H. Rieger, Ferenc Iglói

Dynamical correlations of the spin and the energy density are investigated in the critical region of the random transverse-field Ising chain by numerically exact calculations in large finite systems (L ≤ 128). The spin-spin autocorrelation function is found to decay proportional to (log t) −2xm and (log t) −2xs m in the bulk and on the surface, respectively, with xm and x s m the bulk and surface magnetization exponents, respectively. On the other hand the critical energy-energy autocorrelation functions have a power law decay, which are characterized by novel critical exponents ηe ≈ 2.2 in the bulk and η s e ≈ 2.5 at the surface, respectively. The numerical results are compared with the predictions of a scaling theory. 05.50.+q, 64.60.Ak, 68.35.Rh Typeset using REVTEX 1 The asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent correlation functions for interacting many-body systems turned out a very difficult subject of theoretical research. Exact results in this field are scarce, one can mention the one-dimensional spin 1/2 XY-model [1] and the Ising chain in a transverse-field [2]. Both models can be mapped onto a system of non-interacting fermions, where the equal-position correlation functions are calculated by the Pfaffian method utilizing the theory of Töplitz determinants. In this Letter we consider- at the first time- the critical dynamical correlations of an interacting quantum system in the presence of quenched (i.e. time-dependent) disorder. It has recently become clear that quenched disorder has rather different effects on phase transitions in quantum systems [3] than on those thermally driven phase transitions. For example, in the Griffiths phase, which is situated at the disordered side of the critical point, the susceptibility has an essential singularity in classical systems, whereas in a quantum system the corresponding singularity is stronger, it is in a power law form. Here we consider the prototype of random quantum systems the one-dimensional random transverse-field Ising model defined by the Hamiltonian:

Transverse spin correlations of the random transverse-field Ising model

Ferenc Iglói, István A. Kovács

The critical behavior of the random transverse-field Ising model in finite-dimensional lattices is governed by infinite disorder fixed points, several properties of which have already been calculated by the use of the strong disorder renormalization-group (SDRG) method. Here we extend these studies and calculate the connected transverse-spin correlation function by a numerical implementation of the SDRG method in $d=1,2$, and 3 dimensions. At the critical point an algebraic decay of the form $\ensuremath{\sim}{r}^{\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{t}}$ is found, with a decay exponent being approximately ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{t}\ensuremath{\approx}2+2d$. In $d=1$ the results are related to dimer-dimer correlations in the random antiferromagnetic $XX$ chain and have been tested by numerical calculations using free-fermionic techniques.

Zero-temperature renormalization-group method for quantum systems. III. Ising model in a transverse field in two dimensions

K. A. Penson, Rémi Jullien, Pierre M. Pfeuty

A newly developed zero-temperature real-space renormalization-group method is applied to the quantum Ising model with a transverse field on different two-dimensional lattices: hexagonal, triangular, and quadratic. The order parameter, spin-spin correlation functions, the critical fields, and the critical exponents describing the low-field-large-field transition are calculated. The influence of size and shape of the spin blocks used in the iterative process is discussed. The results for triangular and hexagonal lattices are new; for the quadratic lattice the calculations show an encouraging agreement with previous series-expansion results. The expected equivalence to the critical behavior of the three-dimensional Ising model is discussed: A reasonable agreement is obtained for the hexagonal lattice.

Ising model with a transverse field in two dimensions: Phase diagram and critical properties from a real-space renormalization group

Zvi Friedman

Critical indices, the critical line, and the crossover scaling function for the free energy are calculated for the two-dimensional Ising model with a transverse field using a quantum-mechanical version of the real-space renormalization group. The critical behavior as function of the transverse field at a small finite temperature changes from that of a three-dimensional to that of a two-dimensional Ising behavior, as the critical line is approached.
