Abstract

We review an extension of the optical coherence theory to the case of atomic Schrodinger waves, and show that this requires the introduction of several classes of coherence. Optical methods to manipulate the coherence of matter-wave fields are discussed.

Physics with coherent matter waves

Kai Bongs, Klaus Sengstock

This review discusses progress in the new field of coherent matter waves, in particular with respect to Bose-Einstein condensates. We give a short introduction to Bose-Einstein condensation and the theoretical description of the condensate wavefunction. We concentrate on the coherence properties of this new type of matter wave as a basis for fundamental physics and applications. The main part of this review treats various measurements and concepts in the physics with coherent matter waves. In particular we present phase manipulation methods, atom lasers, nonlinear atom optics, optical elements, interferometry and physics in optical lattices. We give an overview of the state of the art in the respective fields and discuss achievements and challenges for the future.

About nature of coherence of light waves

П. О. Дем’яненко, Yu. F. Zinkovskiy, M.I. Prokof'ev

Starting from an understanding of precise representations of the nature of light, the authors discuss the concept of coherence of light waves. They explore the ideas of photons and quantum packages in relation to the characteristics of coherence.

Interferometry with Atoms

Jean-François Schaff, Tim Langen, Jörg Schmiedmayer

Optics and interferometry with matter waves is the art of coherently manipulating the translational motion of particles like neutrons, atoms and molecules. Coherent atom optics is an extension of techniques that were developed for manipulating \emph{internal} quantum states. Applying these ideas to translational motion required the development of techniques to localize atoms and transfer population coherently between distant localities. In this view position and momentum are (continuouse) quantum mechanical degree of freedom analogous to discrete internal quantum states. In our contribution we start with an introduction into matter-wave optics in section 1, discuss coherent atom optics and atom interferometry techniques for molecular beams in section 2 and for trapped atoms in section 3. In section 4 we then describe tools and experiments that allow us to probe the evolution of quantum states of many-body systems by atom interference.

Nonlinear manipulation and control of matter waves

Elena V. Goldstein, M. G. Moore, Pierre Meystre

This paper reviews some of our recent results in nonlinear atom optics. In addition to nonlinear wave-mixing between matter waves, we also discuss the dynamical interplay between optical and matter waves. This new paradigm, which is now within experimental reach, has the potential to impact a number of fields of physics, including the manipulation and applications of atomic coherence, and the preparation of quantum entanglement between microscopic and macroscopic systems. Possible applications include quantum information processing, matter-wave holography, and nanofabrication.
