Abstract

A time-dependent many-body theory for many-particle systems is formulated using the functional Schrödinger picture. Taking a Gaussian trial wave functional and using the variational principle, the equations of motion are obtained. The equations of motion are solved in the small oscillation regime to yield the generalized RPA results. The electron–hole excitation, the collective plasma oscillation for the paramagnetic state, the Stoner excitation and the spin wave for the ferromagnetic state are derived and discussed. As a further test on the versatility of the present method, the formalism is applied to the bound states of the exciton problem and shown to yield the governing equation in a straightforward manner.

Formally exact quantum variational principles for collective motion based on the invariance principle of the Schrödinger equation

Abraham Klein, Toshio Marumori, Tsutomu Une

The time-dependent variational principle of the Schr\"odinger equation is applied to a formally exact solution of the Schr\"odinger equation whose variational elements are operators which define a collective subspace of the many-body system under study. This generalizes the procedure employed to derive time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory. Four distinct formally exact time-independent variational principles, including several familiar forms, are derived. Application to a class of exactly soluble models, studied in the vibrational regime, illustrates the different modes of implementation of two of the principles. The general theory of large amplitude collective motion is derived. It is shown that the principles can be applied equally well, using either boson or fermion pair degrees of freedom. Some aspects of the relation to the semiclassical limit are discussed.[NUCLEAR STRUCTURE Time-dependent variational principle for collective motion. Invariance principle of Schr\"odinger equation. Finite Temperature Many-Particle Theory of Condensed Matter Systems in the Functional Schrödinger Picture

Hyun Sik Noh, Sang Koo You, Chul Koo Kim

A finite temperature many-particle theory of condensed matter systems is formulated using the functional Schrödinger picture. Using the interacting electron gas as a model system, we solve the equation of motion for the density matrix variationally with a Gaussian type trial density matrix. We show that the present formalism yields the finite temperature Hartree–Fock results both for the para- and ferromagnetic states in a simple and convenient fashion. Implications of the present results and future prospects are also discussed.

Time-dependent variational principle for quantum dynamics in the Schrodinger-picture

Fred Cooper, So-Young Pi

Starting with the exact variational formulation of quantum mechanics (or quantum field theory) in the Schroedinger picture, and using Gaussian trail wave functions, an exact functional Schroedinger equation is obtained. The time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation is obtained and extended to many oscillators and to field theory. The problem of quantum roll, in which an initial Gaussian wave packet starting at an unstable classical equilibrium point evolves in time, is treated using this formalism. Quantum tunnelling is also studied. (LEW)

The Functional Schrödinger Picture Approach to Many-Particle Systems

Chul Koo Kim, Sang Koo You

A self-contained pedagogical introduction to the functional Schrödinger picture method of many-body theory is given at a level suitable for graduate students and also for many-body physicists who have not been exposed to the functional Schrödinger picture method previously. Mathematical tools necessary for the functional Schrödinger picture calculation are introduced. The method is first applied to various condensed matter problems including the electron gas, the Hubbard model, the BCS superconductivity, and dilute bose gas within the variational approximation. It is shown that the variational approximation with the Gaussian trial functional invariably leads into the Hartree-Fock results for both zero and finite temperature cases. In order to go beyond the Gaussian results, concepts of variational and optimized perturbation theories are introduced using simple quantum mechanical languages. Then, the variational perturbation theory in the functional Schrödinger picture is applied to the $λϕ^4$ model to yield the effective potential to the third order. The optimized perturbation theory is also applied to the $λϕ^4$ model to yield a general expression up to the second order.

Coherent state theory of large amplitude collective motion

DAVID J. ROWE, R. Bassermann

A theory of large amplitude collective motion of a many-particle system is presented, which is relevant, for example, to nuclear fission. The theory is a combination of techniques used in many areas of physics and mathematics. The starting point is the application of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation to generate invariant subspaces of the Hamiltonian in the Hartree–Fock approximation. This is a generalization of the group-theoretical device of generating orbits of a group in the construction of reduced representations. It is shown how solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation can be expressed as instantaneous stationary states of a constrained static Hamiltonian. Thus contact is made with the traditional cranking models and constrained Hartree–Fock theories of large amplitude collective motion. The collective motion is quantized using the Hill–Wheeler–Griffin method of generator coordinates in a basis of generalized coherent states. One is thereby able to exploit much of the theory of harmonic oscillator coherent states, which have been so successfully used in the quantum theory of the laser. The resulting Schrödinger equation for the collective dynamics is expressed both in the Bargmann representation and in the more familiar Schrödinger representation. It is shown that solution of the Schrödinger equation in the small amplitude harmonic approximation reproduces the well-known RPA result. A pilot calculation for 28Si shows that application in large amplitude is also feasible.
