Signal-to-pump ratio dependence of buildup and decay rates in photorefractive nonlinear two-beam coupling

Moshe Horowitz, Ron Daisy, Baruch Fischer

The buildup and the decay of photorefractive two-beam coupling are experimentally demonstrated to be strongly dependent on the intensity ratio of the two beams (signal-to-pump ratio). The experiment, done with a BaTiO3 crystal, shows good agreement with the theory of two-beam coupling in the depleted-pump regime. The deviation of the response behavior from the small-signal regime is seen for ratios as small as ∼10−5. These results are significant for applications of two-beam coupling as gain media, especially for the elimination of amplified noise (fanning).

Photorefractive two-beam coupling with light of partial spatiotemporal coherence

Mark Cronin‐Golomb, Hongzhi Kong, Wieslaw Z. Krolikowski

The effect of partial spatiotemporal coherence in photorefractive two-beam coupling is studied theoretically and experimentally. Coupled-wave equations and a beam-propagation method are used to study the influence of coupling on the statistical properties of the beams. The spatial coherence is found to improve for amplified and to deteriorate for deamplified beams. A two-beam coupling experiment with light of reduced spatial coherence was performed with photorefractive barium titanate. Qualitative agreement between theory and experiment was obtained.

All-optical associative memory based on a nonresonant cavity with image-bearing beams

M. Ingold, M. Schadt, M. Duelli +1 more

A new implementation of an all-optical associative memory is presented. It is realized in a nonresonant cavity containing a photorefractive and a nematic liquid crystal. The images, which are stored on slides, modulate the intensities of the signal beams circulating in the cavity. In a photorefractive KNbO3 crystal the signal images are compared with an arbitrary input image on the pump beam by multiple two-beam coupling. In the nematic liquid-crystal cell the signal images are thresholded by a feedback-induced optical bistability. Associative readout, error correction, and image completion are demonstrated for two and three stored black-and-white images. The performance of the new scheme is estimated to be comparable with that of nonlinear holographic associative memories based on thin holograms.
