Abstract

We propose a photon-hole quantum nondemolition measurement system by electromagnetically-induced transparency. The photon-hole disrupts the destructive interference of electron transitions, resulting in drive photon absorption, while preserving the photon-hole state.

We propose a quantum nondemolition measurement of photon-holes by electromagnetically-induced transparency schemes. Upon photon-hole arrival the destructive interference of electron transition amplitudes is destroyed, resulting in absorption of a drive photon preserving the photon-hole state.

Photon hole nondemolition measurement scheme by electromagnetically induced transparency

Serge Rosenblum, Alex Hayat, Pavel Ginzburg +2 more

We propose a scheme for quantum nondemolition measurement of photon holes based on electromagnetically induced transparency, which allows direct nondestructive detection of the photon holes. We analyze a scheme based on interaction of a photon hole signal and a coherent probe field with a three-level atomic medium. Using recent advances in electromagnetically induced transparency technology, we show that the measurement is nondestructive for very weak photon hole signals.

Quantum Nondemolition Measurement and Heralded Preparation of Fock States with Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in an Optical Cavity

Guang Lin, Y. P. Niu, Tianyao Huang +3 more

We propose a technique for quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement and heralded preparation of Fock states by dynamics of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). An atomic ensemble trapped in an optical cavity is driven by two external continuous-wave classical fields to form EIT in steady state. As soon as a weak coherent field is injected into the cavity, the EIT system departs from steady state, falls into transient state dynamics by the dispersive coupling between cavity injected photons and atoms. Because the imaginary part of time-dependent linear susceptibility Im[X(t)] of the atomic medium explicitly depends on the number n of photons during the process of transient state dynamics, the measurement on the change of transmission of the probe field can be used for QND measurement of small photon number, and thus create the photon Fock states in particular single-photon state in a heralded way.

High-efficiency quantum-nondemolition single-photon-number-resolving detector

We discuss an approach to the problem of creating a photon-number-resolving detector using the giant Kerr nonlinearities available in electromagnetically induced transparency. Our scheme can implement a photon-number quantum-nondemolition measurement with high efficiency $(\ensuremath{\sim}99%)$ using fewer than 1600 atoms embedded in a dielectric waveguide.

We report an observation of destructive interference between three-photon and one- photon excitations in a four-level atomic system, which leads to electromagnetically induced transparency and slow group velocities simultaneously for two probe fields.
