Abstract

Abstract The general theory of the time-resolved luminescence of the coupled system consisting of a single-mode microcavity and a two-level quantum dot containing one electron placed inside this microcavity is presented. It is based on the study of the time evolution of the density matrix of a larger system consisting of one electron in the two-level quantum dot, single-mode photons in the microcavity and external photons in a spatial region in which the emitted photons are detected. The decoherence of the system is taken into account in the Markov approximation. The explicit analytical form of the time dependence of the intensity of the emitted photon beam is established. It depends not only on the physical parameters of the system but also contains the matrix elements determining the initial condition of the luminescence process.

Dynamics of photon emission from a quantum dot in a microcavity

Yi Luo

The master equation for the microcavity-quantum dot coupled system is established based on the quantum regression theorem, and the time-dependent evolution of the density matrix of the two-level system for a quantum dot in a microcavity is studied under pumping by laser pulses. The characteristics such as the number of emitted photons and the second-order corelation function are derived from the density matrixes.Parameters of the microcavity and the pumping conditions are optimized for single-photon sources. The relativity between the microcavity decay rate and coupling coefficient is critical for single photon emission.

Dynamics of the excitations of a quantum dot in a microcavity

J. I. Perea, Diego Porras, C. Tejedor

We study the dynamics of a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional microcavity in the strong coupling regime in which the quantum dot exciton has an energy close to the frequency of a confined cavity mode. Under the continuous pumping of the system, the confined electron and hole can recombine either by spontaneous emission through a leaky mode or by stimulated emission of a cavity mode that can escape from the cavity. The numerical integration of a master equation including all these effects gives the dynamics of the density matrix. By using the quantum regression theorem, we compute the first- and second-order coherence functions required to calculate the photon statistics and the spectrum of the emitted light. Our main result is the determination of a range of parameters in which a state of cavity modes with Poissonian or sub-Poissonian (nonclassical) statistics can be built up within the microcavity. Depending on the relative values of pumping and rate of stimulated emission, either one or two peaks close to the excitation energy of the dot and/or to the natural frequency of the cavity are observed in the emission spectrum. The physics behind these results is discussed.

Density matrix of strongly coupled quantum dot – microcavity system

Nguyen Van Hop

Any two-level quantum system can be used as a quantum bit (qubit)-the basic element of all devices and systems for quantum information and quantum computation. Recently it was proposed to study the strongly coupled system consisting of a two-level quantum dot and a monoenergetic photon gas in a microcavity-the strongly coupled quantum dot-microcavity (QD-MC) system for short, with the Jaynes-Cumming total Hamiltonian, for the application in the quantum information processing. Different approximations were applied in the theoretical study of this system. In this work, on the basis of the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation for this system without dissipation we derive the exact formulae for its density matrix. The realization of a qubit in this system is discussed. The solution of the system of rate equation for the strongly coupled QD-MC system in the presence of the interaction with the environment was also established in the first order approximation with respect to this interaction.

Luminescence spectra of quantum dots in microcavities. I. Bosons

Fabrice P. Laussy, Elena del Valle, C. Tejedor

We provide a unified theory of luminescence spectra of coupled light-matter systems realized with semiconductor heterostructures in microcavities, encompassing (i) the spontaneous emission case, where the system decays from a prepared (typically pure) initial state, and (ii) luminescence in the presence of a continuous incoherent pump. We show how, by provoking a self-consistent quantum state, the pump considerably alters the emission spectra, even at vanishing intensities. The main outcome of our analysis is to unambiguously identify strong coupling in situations where it appears in disguise or only seems to appear. Here, we consider bosonic matter fields, in which case fully analytical solutions can be obtained. This describes the case of quantum wells or large quantum dots, or the limit of low excitation where the probability to have particles in the system remains much smaller than one.

Time-resolved second-order correlations of microcavity photons

A. V. Poshakinskiy, Alexander N. Poddubny

The time dependence of the correlations between the photons, emitted from the microcavity with embedded quantum dot under incoherent pumping, is studied theoretically. Analytical expressions for the second-order correlation function g2(t) are presented in strong and weak coupling regimes. At moderate pumping the correlation function demonstrates Rabi oscillations, while at larger pumping it shows monoexponential decay. The decay time of the correlations nonmonotonously depends on the pumping value and has a maximum corresponding to the self-quenching transition.

The quantum dynamics of two qubits inside two distant microcavities connected via a single-mode optical fiber

Văn Hiếu Nguyễn, Bich Ha Nguyen, Hai Trieu Duong

Abstract For application to studying the transmission of quantum information, also called quantum communication, between two identical qubits placed inside two identical single-mode microcavities connected via a single-mode optical fiber, the time evolution of this system is investigated. In the Markovian approximation, the von Neumann equation for its reduced density matrix contains a completely positive linear operator called the Liouvillian operator describing the decoherence of this system due to its interaction with the environment. By using the Linblad formula for the Liouvillian operator, a system of rate equations can be derived. In the special case of resonance between the energy difference of two states in each qubit and the energy of the fiber mode, the rate equations for the system excited up to the first level are solved in first order approximation with respect to the decoherence constants. It is shown that when there is no decoherence, the perfect quantum state transmission between two qubits can take place if the physical parameters of the system satisfy definite conditions. A possible extension to studying the system excited to high energy states is also discussed.
