Abstract

We derive for the first time second-order gradient corrections to the Thomas-Fermi kinetic-energy and entropy density functionals for a fermion system at finite temperature. Density variational calculations for a heated nucleus with a Skyrme interaction lead to excellent agreement with results of Hartree-Fock calculations.

Generalized second-order Thomas-Fermi method for superfluid Fermi systems

Junchen Pei, Na Fei, Y. N. Zhang +1 more

Using the $\ensuremath{\hbar}$ expansion of the Green's function of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equation, we extend the second-order Thomas-Fermi approximation to generalized superfluid Fermi systems by including the density-dependent effective mass and the spin-orbit potential. We first implement and examine the full correction terms over different energy intervals of the quasiparticle spectra in calculations of finite nuclei. Final applications of this generalized Thomas-Fermi method are intended for various inhomogeneous superfluid Fermi systems.

Gradient corrections to the kinetic energy density functional of a two-dimensional Fermi gas at finite temperature

Brandon P. van Zyl, K. Berkane, K. Bencheikh +1 more

We examine the leading-order semiclassical gradient corrections to the noninteracting kinetic-energy density functional of a two-dimensional Fermi gas by applying the extended Thomas-Fermi theory at finite temperature. We find a nonzero von Weizs\"acker-like gradient correction, which in the high-temperature limit goes over to the functional form $(\ensuremath{\hbar}{}^{2}/24m)(\ensuremath{\nabla}\ensuremath{\rho}){}^{2}/\ensuremath{\rho}$. Our work provides a theoretical justification for the inclusion of gradient corrections in applications of density-functional theory to inhomogeneous two-dimensional Fermi systems at any finite temperature.

Extended Thomas-Fermi density functional for the unitary Fermi gas

Luca Salasnich, Flavio Toigo

We determine the energy density $\ensuremath{\xi}(3∕5)n{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{F}$ and the gradient correction $\ensuremath{\lambda}{\ensuremath{\hbar}}^{2}{(\mathbf{\ensuremath{\nabla}}n)}^{2}∕(8mn)$ of the extended Thomas-Fermi (ETF) density functional, where $n$ is the number density and ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{F}$ is the Fermi energy, for a trapped two-component Fermi gas with infinite scattering length (unitary Fermi gas) on the basis of recent diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 233201 (2007)]. In particular we find that $\ensuremath{\xi}=0.455$ and $\ensuremath{\lambda}=0.13$ give the best fit of the DMC data with an even number $N$ of particles. We also study the odd-even splitting $\ensuremath{\gamma}{N}^{1∕9}\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}$ of the ground-state energy for the unitary gas in a harmonic trap of frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$ determining the constant $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Finally we investigate the effect of the gradient term in the time-dependent ETF model by introducing generalized Galilei-invariant hydrodynamics equations.

Extended Thomas-Fermi kinetic energy density functional with spatially varying effective mass in d=1,2,3 dimensions

K. Berkane, K. Bencheikh

For first-principles density functional theory of a many fermion system, the determination of the kinetic energy functional is important. We consider $N$ independent fermions with spatially varying effective mass in two dimensions, we derive the corresponding kinetic energy density using the $\ensuremath{\hbar}$ semiclassical approach. Our result reduces, as expected, to the one obtained in the literature for a constant effective mass. We examine the analytical expressions of the position dependent effective mass terms in the kinetic energy density functional with respect to the dimensionality $d=1,2,3$ of the space.

Analytical expression for the first-order density matrix of ad-dimensional harmonically confined Fermi gas at finite temperature

Brandon P. van Zyl

We present a closed-form expression for the finite temperature first-order density matrix of an isotropic harmonically trapped ideal Fermi gas in any dimension. This constitutes a much sought after generalization of the recent results in the literature, where analytical expressions have been limited to quantities derived from the diagonal first-order density matrix. We compare our results with the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA) and demonstrate numerically that the TFA provides an excellent description of the first-order density matrix in the large-$N$ limit. As an interesting application, we derive a closed-form expression for the finite temperature Hartree-Fock exchange energy of a two-dimensional (2D) parabolically confined quantum dot. We numerically test this result against the 2D TF exchange functional, and comment on the applicability of the local-density approximation to the exchange energy of an inhomogeneous 2D Fermi gas.

Thermodynamics of a trapped Bose gas at low temperature : Departure from the Thomas-Fermi regime.

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Mohamed Benarous

We apply the finite temperature Thomas-Fermi (TF) approximation by using the Time dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations. The exploration of these equations at finite temperature leads to the fact that all the thermodynamics quantities deviate from the standard values in the TF regime .
