Pre-Gaussian model of laser noise: Application to resonant two-photon ionization

Abstract

We present a theoretical treatment of resonant two-photon ionization in the presence of a noisy laser. The atom is modeled by a two-level system, while the statistical fluctuations of the field are described within the framework of the pre-Gaussian model. We show that previous results obtained by using Ornstein-Uhlenbeck statistics are recovered in the appropriate limit in the case of frequency fluctuations. We also give new results in the case of phase and amplitude noise.

The kinetics of the atomic relaxation induced by laser noise

Ouafae El Akramine, A. Makhoute

We present a theoretical study of strong laser-atom interactions, when the laser field parameters are subjected to random processes. The atom is modelled by a two- and a three-level system, while the statistical fluctuations of the laser field are described by a pre-Gaussian model. The interaction of the laser-target is treated nonperturbatively by using the calculation method based on the Hermitian Floquet theory. Our aim consists in studying the kinetics of atomic relaxation induced by laser noise. In the resonant case with electric field strengths small with respect to the atomic unit electric strength, the present nonperturbative results are in agreement with those obtained within the rotating wave approximation of Eberly et al and Wodkiewicz et al for an atom modelled by a two-level system. We discuss some examples which demonstrate the destruction of atomic coherence by the noise, the regime of relaxation to the equilibrium state and the optical analogue of motional narrowing. We also give new results for two- and three-level systems, and for a strong laser field at exact resonance, in the case of phase, amplitude noises. The case of fluctuation due to collisions is also discussed. Our numerical results indicate that ionization effects, in the presence of laser noise, can lead to important modifications of the populations for strong laser-atom interactions. The changes in the ionization rates generated by the noise are also investigated.

Influence of pre-Gaussian noise on selective ionization

L.C. De Winter, Tina L. Weeding

We treat the selective ionization of one component in a two-component mixture. The ionization is modeled by a two-step process involving a pair of two-level systems. The laser field exhibits stochastic fluctuations in phase, frequency, and amplitude which are described by a pre-Gaussian model. We demonstrate the effect of the parameters of the model on ionization and selectivity. The regions where perturbation theory may be applied are discussed.

Pre-Gaussian noise in strong laser-atom interactions

K. Wódkiewicz, Bruce W. Shore, Joseph H. Eberly

We present a continuation of a general theoretical approach to noisy laser-atom interactions based on a special Markov-chain description of external fluctuations. This chain, composed of n independent two-state jump processes, forms a non-Gaussian stochastic process from which a detailed discussion of the atomic response can be given. We show that the n-component Markov chain also has the property of pre-Gaussian noise, because in the limit of n → ∞ it converges to a Gaussian stochastic process. We exhibit solutions for the field spectrum and the atomic-fluorescence spectrum for phase, frequency, and amplitude pre-Gaussian fluctuations of the driving-laser light.

Rate of resonant two-photon ionization in the presence of a partially coherent radiation field

Jacob L. F. de Meijere, Joseph H. Eberly

A treatment is given of two-photon ionization in which particular attention is paid to the influence of the bandwidth of the ionizing light on the ionization rate. The model adopted for the atom is a common one, including two bound levels and a continuum. The model of the laser is general enough to allow short-term temporal fluctuations of amplitude or phase, and these fluctuations give rise to the laser bandwidth. It is found that the fluctuations have the most interesting effects on the ionization rate when the laser coherence time is shorter than the atomic memory time, as could be expected. In addition to laser bandwidth, we consider the influence on the ionization rate of the detuning of the laser from the intermediate-state resonance, the laser power, and the finite lifetime of the intermediate state. Comparisons with related earlier calculations are made and similarities and differences are pointed out.

Multiphoton ionization rate with a non-Lorentzian-band-shape laser

J. J. Yeh, Joseph H. Eberly

A time-independent single-rate theory for multiphoton ionization processes is developed to cover cases with a partially coherent (finite-bandwidth) driving laser. We use the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck fluctuating-phase model to describe the driving field, which has therefore a non-Lorentzian spectrum, and the effective two-level model to represent the atomic system. We present analytic and numerical methods that permit discussion of the effects of non-Lorentzian band-shape laser light, and we give analytically the bandwidth dependence of the rate in the wings of the ionization curve. Our model contains a simple scaling relationship that permits the rate for $N$-photon-resonant ($N+1$)-photon ionization to be obtained directly from the one-photon-resonant two-photon ionization rate. We treat explicitly the cases $N=1$ and $N=2$.
