Abstract

In PbCl 2 vapor under the mutual interaction of two laser beams with wavelengths at λ 1 =266nm and λ 2 =280.2nm (or 282.3nm), a strong coherent emission at 405.8nm is generated, which corresponds to transition between states 6p7s 3 P 1 0 and 6p 2 3 P 2 in atomic Pb. The dependences of its intensity I 405.8 on the power and detuning of λ 2 are measured. The results show that it is caused by a four-wave mixing process in Pb, in which the initial state is a metastable state, 6p 2 3 P 2 .

STIMULATED RAMAN-SCATTERING AND RESONANT LASER-RADIATION IN PHOTODISSOCIATED LEAD ATOMS

J Zhang, By Cheng, Dz Zhang +3 more

Strong stimulated radiation at wavelengths 3740 A was observed when PbCl 2 molecules were photodissociated by a 2660 A UV laser. Based on spectral characteristics and Pb energy level structure, this radiation was judged to be resonant laser radiation and stimulated Raman scattering due to the populated 6p 2 3 P 2 metastable Pb atoms from photodissociated PbCl 2 molecules. A theoretical model was developed to describe the whole process, and experimentally fitted to determine the photodissociation coefficient of the metastable Pb atoms from dissociated PbCl 2 by 2660 A laser

Coherent 420 nm laser beam generated by four-wave mixing in Rb vapor with a single continuous-wave laser*

Hao Liu, Jinpeng Yuan, Lirong Wang +2 more

We demonstrate the generation of the coherent 420 nm laser via parametric four-wave mixing process in Rb vapor. A single 778 nm laser with circular polarization is directly injected into a high-density atomic vapor, which drives the atoms from the 5S1/2 state to the 5D5/2 state with monochromatic two-photon transition. The frequency up-conversion laser is generated by the parametric four-wave mixing process under the phase matching condition. This coherent laser is firstly certified by the knife-edge method and a narrow range grating spectrometer. Then the generated laser power is investigated in terms of the power and frequency of the incoming beam as well as the density of the atoms. Finally, a 420 nm coherent laser with power of 19 μW and beam quality of M x 2 = 1.32 , M y 2 = 1.37 is obtained with optimal experimental parameters. This novel laser shows potential prospects in the measurement of material properties, information storage, and underwater optical communication.

Coherent blue emission generated by Rb two-photon excitation using diode and femtosecond lasers

Jesus P Lopez, Marco Polo Moreno de Souza, Marcio H G de Miranda +1 more

Abstract The coherent blue light generated in rubidium vapor due to the combined action of an ultrashort pulse train and a continuous wave diode laser is investigated. Each step of the two-photon transition 5S–5P 3 / 2 –5D is excited by one of the lasers, and the induced coherence between the 5S and 6P 3 / 2 states is responsible for generating the blue beam. Measurements of the excitation spectrum reveal the frequency comb structure and allow us to identify the resonant modes responsible for inducing the nonlinear process. Further, each resonant mode excites a different group of atoms, making the process selective in atomic velocity. The signal dependency on the atomic density is characterized by a sharp growth and a rapid saturation. We also show that for high intensity of the diode laser, the Stark shift at resonance causes the signal suppression observed at low atomic density.

Observation of four-wave mixing involving two quadrupole transitions in Na vapor

R. L. Panock, Richard R. Freeman, John E. Bjorkholm

We have observed a four-wave mixing process in sodium vapor in which two of the four waves are resonantly enhanced by electric quadrupole transitions. The atom is pumped via a quadrupole transition from the 3s to the 4d state with a single photon at 2894 Å. Intense coherent emission at 3427 Å corresponding to the 3d-3s transition can be observed exiting the Na cell only in the direction parallel to the input beam. Also observed coming from the cell is intense coherent light at 2.34 µm corresponding to the 4d-4s transition in Na.

Coherent near-infrared light generation based on self-seeded parametric four-wave mixing in Rb vapor

Xuewen Wang, Jinpeng Yuan, Lirong Wang +2 more

Abstract We demonstrate 1.37 µ m coherent near-infrared light generation via self-seeded parametric four-wave mixing (FWM) process in Rb atomic vapor. Two lasers (780 nm and 776 nm) in the co-propagating configuration, drive the Rb atoms from the 5S 1/2 ground state to the 5D 5/2 excited state. The parametric FWM around the 5P 3/2 –5D 5/2 –6P 3/2 –6S 1/2 –5P 3/2 transition loop is effectively established under phase matching conditions. The generated coherent light wavelength is confirmed using an optical spectrum analyzer, and the output power is investigated with the input laser frequency, power and atomic density. Consequently, a 1.37 µ m coherent light with the power of 27 µ W and the beam quality of M x 2 = 1.22 and M y 2 = 1.25 is obtained. An additional 795 nm laser is introduced to enhance the output power by 1.5 times through velocity-selective optical hyperfine repumping.

Generation of coherent UV radiation by optical wave-mixing processes in atomic potassium

P. L. Zhang, Y. C. Wang, ARTHUR L. SCHAWLOW

A pulsed dye-laser beam (ωL) pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser is focused into a heat-pipe oven containing potassium vapor (nk ≈ 1016 cm−3). Two-photon resonant four-wave and six-wave mixing processes using the potassium 8s 2S1/2 state are investigated. Thirty-two coherent UV radiation lines are generated within the range of 300–400 nm through the processes ωUV = 2ωL ± ωIR and ωUV = 2ωL − ω′IR − ω″IR ± ω‴IR, where ωIR are frequencies of laser-induced IR waves generated in the vapor near the transitions 8S–7P, 7P–7S, 7P–5D, 8S–6P, 7S–6P, 5D–6P, etc. The influence of resonant enhancement on the UV line intensities and the phase-matching condition are analyzed.
